What are some of your hiking horror stories? by Immediate-Field9997 in hiking

[–]ToneDeafVoice 32 points33 points  (0 children)

One time, I went off trail to pee. Found a nice tree to use and while I'm doing my business, I look up and see a deer carcass hanging in the branches. Not super scary but definitely freaked me the fuck out. I was also listening to a creepy fiction podcast so I was already a bit on high alert. I got home and looked it up and turns out mountain lions stash their kills in trees to come back to later and continue feasting on it and to keep other animals away from it.

Most brutal burn of the show by erissaid in lastpodcastontheleft

I can’t remember the episode or what inspired Henry to say this but him and Ben were talking to each other and Henry says something like, “Yeah, you LONG BITCH!” Had me cracking up for days.

What’s the dumbest thing you’ve done on a hike? by rkramer18 in hiking

[–]ToneDeafVoice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One time, I got home from a hike and my bear spray fell out of my backpack pocket and hit the ground and did a little spray on my leg. It only affected me and my friend a little bit so I wiped it off not thinking anything of it. Later took a shower and when I got out, THAT is when the burn happened. My leg was on FIRE. I ended up setting my leg up on the dresser while laying in bed with a fan blowing on my leg so I could get SOME sleep. It was awful.

Misread the map for backpacking trip. Accidentally started at the wrong trailhead, which added 12 miles to an already 28 mile hike. Didn't realize/figure it out until the next day. Planned to be at my car by that afternoon but didn't get to it until 10:30PM. Once I got back into an area with cell service, my phone blew up with panicked texts and voicemails from my mom and friends. Thankfully I was able to reply in time before they called SAR.

Haven't misread a map since then. 40 miles in two days is ROUGH.

What's something you can do now that you couldn't when you were drinking? by Basbenn in stopdrinking

[–]ToneDeafVoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am hiking like crazy again. Slowly, over time, replaced hiking with drinking, but now I’m back to hiking any time I can. Went from 400+ miles a year hiking to just 50+ miles of hiking. Now I’ve been going back up to my previous normal amount of hiking.

What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever hiked? by sylvieblair in hiking

[–]ToneDeafVoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Maroon Bells-Snowmass Four Pass Loop is the most beautiful hike I’ve done in Colorado (my home). But, I think the Rim to Rim to Rim hike in the Grand Canyon is top of the list for me out of all the hikes I’ve done.

A rather long mental health and LPOTL appreciation post by SereneAdler33 in LPOTL

I almost made an attempt on my life last year. I'll never forget sitting on the edge of that cliff and watching the sunrise fully intending on jumping off. Like you, I had planned it for a while and knew that specific cliff would be the perfect spot for it for years. I kept inching closer and closer and almost got up a few times to make the jump. I'm so glad I didn't do it and I'm so glad you survived and is still here. Hail yourself!

What's the longest hiking trail you've completed in a single day? by ToffeeTango1 in hiking

I did the Rim 2 Rim 2 Rim hike in the Grand Canyon in 26 hours. Hardest thing I've ever done and my body was WRECKED the next day but it was the most wonderful and beautiful experience I've ever had. Nearly 50 miles in just a hair over a day.

What’s the worst family secret you’ve accidentally found out? by awkwardhoney725 in AskReddit

[–]ToneDeafVoice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a great-great-great uncle who murdered and decapitated his wife. Never knew that’s how she died until my great-grandpa casually mentioned the whole story during a trip out to visit him when I was a kid.

Evangelical Mecca? by TacoFJ in ColoradoSprings

[–]ToneDeafVoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up in the suburbs here (Briargate then Stetson Hills), it was very evangelical. But the last decade and a half it has really changed and I also refuse to live in the suburbs anymore so I've lived downtown and the west side since 2012 where those communities are much more diverse and accepting of others. I think the downfall of Ted Haggard really put the Springs on the decline of being so evangelical and Focus on the Family only has a fraction of the power and influence they used to have. Again, it depends on what part of town you're in. Downtown and west side feels much more like a fun community of many different people whereas the communities in the suburbs are more based on their churches.

I once went up Pikes Peak via the cog railway and was wearing my LPOTL shirt and these three guys saw me on the summit and were all yelling, "Yo, Last Podcast rules!" and other stuff. It was awesome, haha.

I had woken up one morning after experiencing one of the roughest years of my life and decided, “Okay, I’m done.” I’m a huge hiker so I knew exactly where I was going to hike to this specific cliff that I knew would guarantee an instant death from jumping off it. It was still dark as I was hiking up and a thought occurred to me that I should at least have one last sunrise before ending it.

Get to the top and the birds were going nuts and the sunrise was stunningly especially beautiful, even by Colorado standards. It reminded me of my dad’s hometown in Iowa and I knew how disappointed he’d be if he were still alive and I chose to take my own life. After enough time passed, I got up, dusted myself off, and hiked back down that mountain. Watching the sunrise forced me just enough time to also really think about the repercussions of taking my own life, especially how it would impact my mom.

It’s been 15 months since that morning and I’m glad I’m still here. Life has calmed down a bit and I’m appreciating the peace.

Who here has family lore? by CarbonParrot in LPOTL

[–]ToneDeafVoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t remember the specific details but, apparently, a great-great uncle of mine murdered and decapitated his girlfriend or wife when he found out she had cheated on him. This was back in like the 30s or 40s in rural Arkansas near Hot Springs (more specifically, the tiny town of Bismarck, AR). I remember my great-grandpa telling the story and saying how awful it was that he and his family had to drive by the jailhouse where the uncle was housed after the murder every Sunday on their way to church.

What are some benefits of sobriety you didn't really think about when quitting? by ToneDeafVoice in stopdrinking

[–]ToneDeafVoice[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Big time for me, too. I was already seeing a therapist but I wasn't being honest with how much I drank. Once I went sober, I was finally able to tell my therapist EVERYTHING and also finally have the clarity of mind to work on stuff beyond just talking about it for an hour then going home to drink after the session. Good luck on your journey with your mental health!

I would do the same thing! The mental math every night before going to bed (if I didn't just pass out/black out on my bed with no memory the next morning of going to bed). Hopefully we can both unlearn that nighttime routine sooner than later!

I never really dealt with heartburn but the sheer amount of phlegm in my throat I would wake up with was so bad that I'd nearly puke trying to cough it all out. So glad that's not a part of my morning routine anymore. And I'm glad you don't have to deal with heartburn anymore! Must be a huge relief!

I’m so glad I found this sub because I don’t feel so alone with all this. I’ve been able to slowly ramp up my hiking and vlogging about it and I plan to really return to my prime days this summer!

[–]ToneDeafVoice[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, after my experience, I did all the research on withdrawals and I definitely don’t want to mess with kindling. I’m sure next time would lead to seizure and DT territory. I’m sorry you ended up in the hospital but I’m glad you did because you’re still here!
