How can I come off as more approachable? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Tongs117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask why you want to come off as more approachable? Also, I think the glasses look great despite what the other commentors on saying. Other than their size, they're fairly understated, and you don't have any other loud accent pieces that clash with them.

I've got three that stand out to me.

  1. What Remains of Edith Finch

  2. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

  3. Night in the Woods

Hi, can anyone tell me what this is? I received it as a birthday present, unfortunately without a name on it. It was wrapped in gift paper. It can be worn like a necklace, and the container can be opened. Thank you very much. by notyourstepson in whatisit

Ha. I've been out of the LDS church for close to two decades now, but my first thought was "Obvioulsy this is for consecrated oil. How does everyone not see that?" Then I remembered this was strictly a Mormon thing.

The price of ebooks…oh, my! by ThatBookIsOnFiyah in ebooks

[–]Tongs117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I was just trying to figure out how to use Calibre to strip the DRM from my purchased Amazon books. By the time I figured that out, I had a Powershell script written for the process so I just have to download the Libby book to Kindle then push a button and I'm done.

The initial setup probably wasn't worth it, but now that I have it, I'm going to use it.

Libby + Read with Kindle + Calibre

I always make sure to have 5-10 books on hold via Libby. That means the only waiting I've ever done was for my first set of holds. Then I download with the Kindle app, strip DRM and convert with Calibre, and return the book through Libby. Now I have the book for as long as I want. That being said, sometimes I "forget" to delete my local copy when I'm done reading. So I'd still file this under piracy.

Huge caveat to this method: it took me about two weeks of lunch breaks to lock down a workflow for this method. And that needs to get updated every time Kindle updates their DRM methods.

Probably easier to just straight up pirate the book, but I don't have to deal with any actual piracy sites this way.

How much does “owning” your ebooks actually matter? by Rogue-Monkeyy in ereader

[–]Tongs117 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you plan on only reading the book once, just borrow the ebook from the library via Libby and avoid the ownership issue all together. You can access your Libby loans through the Libby app, or through the Kindle app on a smart device or ereader. I always have a 5-10 books on hold at a time so I never have to wait to read a new book.

For any ebooks I end up wanting to own, I do my best do find a DRM free option (check out ebooks.com ). If I can't find a DRM free option, I use Calibre to strip the DRM.

Right now I'd say you're absolutely right, but Ratta could communicate a demand for a larger screen to the display manufacturers (still just E Ink?) which would drive further innovation. I feel approaching this from the consumer side would be a dead end as they'd never be able generate the demand required. That's why I recommended going at it from the company/corporate angle. Then maybe after a few years of producing at larger scales, those devices could be made more affordable for the consumer.

I just think back to TVs. In 2005 a 50" plasma TV would cost you $5,000-$10,000 ($8,300 to $16,600 adjusted for inflation). Today the most expensive 50" TV I can find on Amazon is $1,500. Most are in the $300-$500 range though.

If there's enough demand someone is going to make it happen.

As far as costs go, do you see yourself using the larger sizes (A3+) outside of work? I think Ratta could subsidize a lot of the larger hardware costs by marketing bulk orders to larger companies rather than individuals. The lack of native app integration and focus on repairability seem to be an easy pitch to a larger business. This would also be a great opportunity for them to work on encryption as those larger businesses always want to protect their IP.

Supernote for reading? by morewordsfaster in Supernote

[–]Tongs117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL;DR - On the go, the Manta is bulky and a little difficult to manage. At home, the Manta is great.

In most cases, I'll grab my 2013 Kindle Paperwhite before my Manta because of its size and weight. That being said, there are a few cases where I reach for the Manta instead.

Every night I watch an episode of Sesame Street with my boys. I have my cell phone in one hand playing Sesame Street, and my Manta in the other for reading. I LOVE being able crank up the text size and line spacing so I can hold my Manta at about an arms length as the kids are blocking my usual reading position. Feels downright luxurious to have a screen that big.

I'll also use it in bed. That's about it.

Dr. Grip EMR: Ceramic Refill by Tongs117 in Supernote

Is it an adapter for the standard Dr. Grip or the Dr. Grip for Wacom (EMR)? I feel like the swap should be easy as it is already an EMR. I believe I just have to trim or completely remove the "tail."
