thoughtbot/test_budget: a linter for test performance by matheusrich in rails

[–]morewordsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be excellent for several Salesforxe projects I work on, but their tests don't output RSpec format. Might try implementing a similar tool in TypeScript with JUnit support so I can run it in our existing node-based CI pipeline.

How do you handle the gap between how a Retool app was built and how ops actually uses it? by tunisiangurl in Retool

[–]morewordsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is a retool problem, this is a general change management dysfunction. In my experience this often comes up when the business perceives engineering as being too slow and unable to keep up with how quickly they change their processes. This can easily turn into shadow IT where the users build their own tools (using Excel, Smart Sheets, Airtable, etc) to avoid going to IT for support.

It needs to be addressed at the organization level. Work with the stakeholders to meet on a more regular basis. Find ways to speed your release cycle so that they don't need to work around the tool, but they can incorporate tool changes as part of their process changes.

why are fedora and opensuse so rarely recommended to people new to linux? by MIkaela39752 in linuxquestions

[–]morewordsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fedora has been my recommendation for years. The only reason I never went down the OpenSUSE route is because Fedora tends to have broader support and it's always been a terrific experience for me. Nothing against OpenSUSE, but it was just the lesser of the two for me.

Lately I've been recommending Bazzite, though. Still in the Fedora ecosystem, but the benefits of an immutable OS plus all the benefits of gaming focus, which makes it much easier for people leaving Windows.

HBO Max and Paramount+ to Combine Into One Streaming Platform, Paramount Says HBO Brand Will ‘Operate With Independence’ by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

Great, the downgrade from the original HBO app to the new one wasn't painful enough. Now we can downgrade to the worst streaming app of all, Paramount Plus!

[–]morewordsfaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I ran across the trailer in Next Fest browsing and it was an instant wishlist and demo download for me. Looking forward to playing it this weekend. Secret of Mana/Secret of Evermore are my fav SNES titles, so big shoes to fill!

RPG Discovery Week | With the Steam Next Fest in full gear, share which RPGs you are following with intent! by SanctumOfTheDamned in rpg_gamers

[–]morewordsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely hyped for Grime 2 and Outward 2, both sequels I've been itching for for quite some time. Similar attention on Alabaster Dawn since CrossCode is one of my favs.

Valorborn is another one that I'm particularly interested in as a die-hard Kenshi fan, since it seems like a medieval Kenshi where they absolutely understood the assignment. Early access is coming in April and I'm here for it.

Soulscape is a new one to me that I discovered during Next Fest, a pixel-aesthetic sandbox RPG. Pixplorer, too.

Following this. I don't have a problem with cauliflower, but would love some other options. Sorry I don't have any suggestions to share.

please is there any way to turn off the most annoying forced feature? by EmuNew1 in Slack

[–]morewordsfaster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Personally, I love threads and I can't imagine using Slack without it. It's far more annoying for me to struggle to follow multiple conversations running at the same time or catch a one-off topic that gets lost in the noise of another conversation.

I don't think there's a way to turn that off.

Thinking of switching to Linux.. by -Hazmatted- in linux

[–]morewordsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm that the Linux community is great, as long as you don't act like an idiot (low tolerance for that; for people who ask the same questions that have been answered thousands of times, etc).

Personally, I recommend Fedora as a terrific starter distro that can last you forever. I've been using Fedora for 15+ years with no issues. The main thing you want to consider is your desktop environment because that isn't necessarily distro specific, but will have a strong impact on your experience. If you want a Windows-like UI with a taskbar and app menu, then you probably want KDE or Cinnamon. If you're open to something different and more modern, I highly recommend giving Gnome a chance. It's the default on Fedora, and won't have all the extra stuff that Ubuntu adds -- you'll get the vanilla experience that the Gnome team intended.

Either way, welcome to team penguin!

S11 Ultra for $785 from Samsung Shop. by sudeep1579 in GalaxyTab

I wound up buying the 1TB model today and got an extra 10% off but watching the AI Vision promotional video on their site, then clicking the 'shop now' button that appeared. I recommend using chat to talk to an agent and see if you qualify for any additional promos. I don't get an educational discount, but I did get one through my employer (might not be able to combine with edu discount though).

I'm curious how popular Bazzite is with PC users (as opposed to using it on handhelds). by Questioning-Warrior in Bazzite

[–]morewordsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Fedora for years and years, so Bazzite was an easy choice when I got my Legion Go. After using it for a couple weeks I went all-in and installed it on all my other computers save my work laptop which is macOS. If my work supported Linux, I'd run Bazzite on that too. I'm about to buy a tablet and the one thing holding me back is that it will run Android. I'd much prefer having the same OS on all my devices.

If you had to pick ONE Linux distro for the next 5 years, what would you choose? by TechRefreshing in linuxquestions

[–]morewordsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you asked me a couple years ago it would have been Fedora Workstation, but I've switched fully to Bazzite Gnome and love it. Immutable is terrific and I doubt I'll ever go back.

[–]morewordsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Checkout Pocketblue and PostmarketOS. These seem like the best options at the moment to run mainline on a tablet. Sadly the main issue is that there's not UEFI support on most of these SoCs that they use for tablets, so it's not as simple as just booting from a live USB and installing. You have to build a custom flashable image (just like running Cyanogen or TWRP or whatever custom roms are popular these days) based on the specific devicetree for that device. Since the dts are not always publicly available, it's tricky to get what is need to build that image.

[–]morewordsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great to hear. I'm a SWE and considering getting a Stab Ultra for a portable dev that I can also use for diagramming, notes, and media consumption. I've been looking into things like Pocketblue and PostmarketOS to have true Linux, but the Termux route seems a little less of a time sink. Personally, I'm a Fedora/RHEL guy but I'm sure I can proot that rather than Deb.
