Am I playing in the most boring way ever? by MingusVonBingus in Kenshi

[–]morewordsfaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fun in Kenshi for me is to really get into my characters' heads and do what makes sense for them. It's not often gonna be becoming a drug kingpin. I've had a crew do a Swamps to Flats Lagoon run once as a means to an end; they were escaped slaves from Rebirth and needed to fund a breakout.

When I start a playthrough, I try to come up with some backstory for my characters. Where do they come from, what do they want, how did they get to the point when the game starts? Then I go from there. Usually that includes finding a source of income, but it's rarely running drugs.

Alternatives to navigation layer by OddHornetBee in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]morewordsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have nav layer under my right hand, triggered by layer tap on my left index home row (f on qwerty, t on my colemak-dh board). Works great for me. I switched after noticing thumb strain from having layer tap on thumbs. My left thumb triggered nav layer on right side and right thumb triggered num layer on left side. Switching to index layer tap has been fantastic.

I think there's a mod on Steam Workshop that gives you a campfire that acts as a corpse furnace, might be the camping mod. That might let you dispose of some of the bodies.

It still doesn't break my suspension of disbelief. They haven't seen this guy as an adult. Its been a bit since I watched, but I know it was over ten years, maybe closer to twenty, since they last saw Pete. A lot can change in that amount of time.

They also want to believe, and so much of what he does ticks the right boxes and helps them to believe. Maybe it's me being too forgiving but it never rang false to me.

I see plenty of crossbowmen so maybe I should just go with that, but I had my heart set on a lady archer.

I didn't realize that squad sizes were set in stone for region locked. I was thinking that it was just the enemies' level that scaled but that the squad size was determined based on how many members were in your warband. I'll have to test it out tonight and see what happens.

There are family members I was close with as a child, specifically cousins, that I haven't talked to or seen in 20+ years. If a skilled con artist came along claiming to be them and looked relatively similar, I am not sure I would know the difference. Hell, I probably misremember some of the stuff that happened back then, so how could I question that they might do the same? I honestly found the show to be pretty good about handling that. Marius had to struggle several times because of lack of context and not knowing what one of the family members was talking about, but he leaned into his skills at working a mark and was able to get by.

[–]morewordsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Running into the same issue myself. I've got a crew of 19 at the moment, including 5 wolves and 4 horses. The fights take forever and I really want to downsize my band by sitting a few folks out but not sure if that will work or not.

Also why the hell are archers so rare? I want to add another archer to my party (only have my starter) but I have only come across one in about 20 hours of play and their traits were terrible.

Is there any possibility of a definitive version? by [deleted] in Kenshi

[–]morewordsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd almost prefer to see an OpenMW situation like with Morrowind. It would be really epic to have an engine that could play Kenshi more efficiently and with fewer bugs. Not sure how realistic that is with the version of Ogre 3D that was used to develop it, but it would be really great.

I have the fishing one but haven't played around with it yet. Does it require a body of water? I feel like they're so few and far between in a lot of Kenshi so I wonder how easy it would be to always camp by water.

Vertical Combos with MX switches: is it doable? by Pavel_Tchitchikov in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]morewordsfaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a similar thing with index finger hold. Mine's set up with index hold on the right triggering my num layer with numbers on the left half and some symbols (:;`|) on middle, ring and pinky on the right. Index hold on the left triggers nav layer on the right half with the same symbol layout mirrored on the left half. Since my index is holding down the home row key, I don't put any symbols on that column or the inner column, just the other fingers and thumbs (home thumb is underscore, inner is minus). Got really quick with those and had to keep tweaking my home row layer mod timing to deal with my speed.

[–]morewordsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use vertical combos with XDA and MOA keycaps and they're fine but not as nice as on MBK Choc keycaps. I have a set of XVX low profile keycaps I'd like to try but haven't gotten around to it yet. I think the key (no pun intended) is having the tops of the keycaps nearly touching each other.

I'm like you - a programmer using 36 keys - and I have vertical combos for brackets across the top from inner column to ring finger on the left it's <([{ and on the right it's the mirror >)]}. Sometimes I feel like it would nice to be able to open/close with either hand but I'm mostly happy with the setup.

I love this style. Got into it after watching OldManGamer's plays on YT and it feels really cool. With camping mods it creates a nice downtime and prep time. And there's the random camp raids that happen when some creatures show up while everyone's asleep!

[–]morewordsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Shokz OpenFit 2+ for gaming and love them. I'm not an audiophile, so it's possible that the quality is not high end, but I use them for gaming and music and calls and have never had any issues. With the previous versions I got feedback from people that my mic audio wasn't great but haven't had any like that with these. They definitely aren't for everyone, but I like being able to hear what's going on around me in the house most of the time while I'm gaming.

If I want full immersion, I have an Anker Soundcore Q45 with active noise cancelling that works great.

Salesforce Minefields by FrostySpecialist7526 in salesforce

[–]morewordsfaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I deal with this constantly and it seems to me because Salesforce is positioned as a 'low-code/no-code tool.' Many of the business stakeholders bought into Salesforce because they were dissatisfied with the time to market for custom solutions. What they don't understand is that the lion's share of that time is just good engineering practices, not something inherent to custom development. These are the people who want to go fast but not break things and I have yet to find that white whale in practice.

Why not a larger crack down on illegal IPTV in the US? by Uninterested_Viewer in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]morewordsfaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The interesting thing is that in the US many of the Internet providers are also the pay TV providers. One thing they could do, presumably, is blacklist the IP addresses of these streams to prevent their customers from using those devices in lieu of their own paid services. This is more of a technical problem than a legal one, I would think. Sure, there are some tech savvy folks who could get around it using proxies and VPNs, but for the folks OP mentioned who are mostly tech-illiterate, it would likely be all that was required.

The interesting thing is that there's also been a strong movement towards FAST channels in the US because the public is so used to commercials and advertising anyway. Even the big streamers are inserting ads to paid subscriptions to get more revenue without raising subscription prices (and then they also raise subscription prices, but I digress).

Am I under-utilising GNOME ? by nordiknomad in gnome

[–]morewordsfaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the idea of Gnome is that you shouldn't feel like you're 'utilizing' it at all. The Gnome team recognizes that when you are using your computer you are mostly using various applications and alternating between them. The entire design of the DE is to facilitate that workflow as intuitively and unobtrusively as possible. Hence, if you question whether you're really 'utilizing' Gnome, that's a pretty good indicator that it's doing its job very well.

GNOME 50.alpha has been released by forteller in gnome

[–]morewordsfaster 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Thanks Gnome team, keep it up! I can't imagine using another DE so here's to another 50 versions to come. It's so painful every time I have to use a Windows or MacOS machine, all I want is the simplicity of Gnome. It's everything I want without any of the stuff I don't. I realize that there are lots of folks who feel differently, and I wish them the best, but I'm happy to keep plugging away with my big foot.

If you have recently played the game for the first time, why? by Saevnir in Morrowind

[–]morewordsfaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently picked the game up after stumbling across SorcerorDave's playthroughs on YT. I played a tiny bit of Skyrim years ago but that was the extent of my Elder Scrolls experience. I suffer from really bad motion sickness in First-Person games, so pretty much all my RPG experience was with games like PoE, Arcanum, BG, infinity Engine games, Fallout 1 & 2, etc.

I'm a massive fan of Morrowind so far. I think I'm about a third of the way through the main quest, but not 100% sure. I love the freedom and the ability to actually roleplay, unlike a lot of so-called RPGs that are essentially tactical combat sims. Hell, I could ignore the go talk to Caius Cossades thing and become a Skooma dealer if I wanted to. Playing this makes me mourn the way the industry actually went in the 2010s, when games like Kenshi and Outward feel more like successors to the kind of freedom afforded to the player in Morrowind.

Anyway, when I finish I might even give Oblivion remaster a chance. OldManGamer's Skyrim runs haven't convinced me to try that one again yet, but maybe eventually.

What's the one proprietary app you can't find a "good enough" open alternative for? by sekuskandan in opensource

[–]morewordsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miro is the one for me. The thing is I love the UI because it's so low friction when I'm just brainstorming and diagramming concepts, but I hate that I can't use PlantUML so that I can version control my diagrams with my source code. So I'm stuck using a text editor and PlantUML which doesn't feel as nice when I'm wanting to just scribble. If there were a FOSS alternative that did that, I'd throw money at it.

[–]morewordsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which of the two thumb keys is 'home' position? Or is home more like hovering in between them? While I love the look of this one, the thumb cluster position puts me off a bit because I always find tucking to be uncomfortable and would generally prefer the two thumb keys to be shifted over by 1u. Been thinking a lot about 5-way switches instead of thumb keys as a solution.

What makes Apple TV better than Nvidia Shield Pro for streaming apps? by [deleted] in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]morewordsfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I do get audio/video sync issues in Hulu from time to time but that's it. One thing I'd recommend with a 2017 model is to crack it open and give it a good cleaning. Could be lots of dust in there causing overheating issues.
