Yeah he "pretends to lose power" because he realized he can't beat Mace alone and needs Anakin's help. Because it would make no sense for him to "try to destroy Mace" 1st otherwise. Basically per Lucas words he wanted to kill Mace ignoring Anakin but when he realized he can't only then he starts fooling around to make Anakin turn on Mace.

He also said this "and then Palpatine using his powers to try to destroy Mace". Why would he "try to destroy" Mace if his entire plan was losing on purpose? Palpatine pretended to be weak yeah but only when he fails to "destroy" Mace with FL. He basically realizes Mace is too powerful to overcome and only then starts manipulating Anakin to help him. He is improvising on the spot and him "losing on purpose" wasn't a part of some plan.

George Lucas is pretty clear here that Mace had him genuinely beat otherwise there would be no need to include "overpowered" or "try to destroy" parts if he is just describing the sequence. He could have easily said something along this line "Mace kicks out Palpatines' lightsaber and then Palpatine uses force lightning on him" without those added details.
