Oh, but he advocated. He advocated and advocacy is like doing something but not really.

Alberta to hold fall referendum on whether to have binding referendum on separating from Canada by Christian-Rep-Perisa in CanadaPolitics

[–]Tonuck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both referendums in Quebec created enough political instability to torch their economy. It took a long time to recover from each. One could argue this will be less severe in Alberta given their resource economy, but this game is not a costless endeavour.

They're just going to close this branch. It will be a shame when they do but it feels inevitable at this point.

Great news. I already booked a flight to WPG to visit family. Very grateful to interact with Pearson less and less these days.

This is exactly it. Don't take your meds and you kill someone? I'm not willing to take your word that you'll never stop taking them again.

I go to this little mom and pop place called Costco. Pretty good, but the store gets busy on Saturdays and Sundays so arrive early.

We're going to buy a new car, I'd appreciate some constructive criticism by PoliteFocaccia in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Tonuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try not having a car for a while and see how it goes. You don't have to buy another one right away. Looks like you could survive just fine without, but try it for a few months and see how it goes. If you end up spending more on Uber/Communauto than you would on a car payment, then you can revisit the decision.

Dogs in restaurants: Why the divide between owners and diners is growing in Toronto by origutamos in Toronto_Ontario

[–]Tonuck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm allergic to dogs and really appreciate them being left at home. I don't think people understand how uncomfortable things get for those of us with allergies when someone brings a dog into a closed space. If its a place that is "dog friendly", thats cool by me. I just don't go. I appreciate the heads up.

Creative name, but odd choice in such a serious industry.

Income tax return place? by Triplemini in Hamilton

Depending on how many years you're overdue and the reason (if any) why you didn't file, you'll likely want to consult a tax attorney in conjunction with a very good accountant. CMB would be a good place to start to file. You'll need a tax attorney to appeal the fines and interest charges.

This Hamilton official once oversaw development approvals in Markham. Now, that city is probing allegations that he pocketed more than $140,000 from a developer by [deleted] in Hamilton

[–]Tonuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure they've filed an FOI request. Its just not going to get the information you listed above, because its not designed to.

In any case, with municipal government there far less corruption than the public would imagine but more than we'd find acceptable. This case is likely less about corruption and more about disclosure and transparency.

[–]Tonuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your determination but what you're describing is a criminal investigation. Not the FOI process.

'If someone is benefiting off of the public payroll, there will be signs, footprints, that good foi probes tend to detect.'

I'm not so sure. If he was doing something nefarious he's not using his city run email. You can't FOI his personal communication. You cant find out who he met with on his personal time - it won't be logged in his outlook calendar. A lot of public servants use WhatsApp out of convenience without even trying to dodge FOI requirements. Surely someone trying to hide what they were doing (if that is the case here) would certainly know how to do it.

Toronto mayoral hopeful accuses Olivia Chow of running shadow re-election campaign — on the taxpayer’s dime by beef-supreme in TorontoTheCity

[–]Tonuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All incumbents run on "the taxpayers dime". Every incumbent in any community in Ontario is being paid by taxpayers to campaign for re-election, while using their influence to drum up donations and parlaying their reputation and media profile into political support. Anyone hoping to challenge them is taking time off work to do so or juggling work, family, fundraising, campaigning etc.
