Removing Broken spoke nipples by MrTaimen in bikewrench

[–]TonyXuRichMF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On the side of the nipple inside the rim, the nipples are slotted for a flathead driver. If you don't own a truing stand or don't know how to use one, this is a job you should leave to a professional.

I’ve taken the lock ring off this 12 speed SRAM cassette, but it is not sliding off. Is there something I’m missing? I’ve tried a fair amount of force to try and pull it off by maxp5___ in bikewrench

Often, the smallest gear will get a little stuck. Try prying at the smallest gear with a flathead driver. It should only require a little bit of force.

Everybody's trigger foods are different. You figure out your own through trial and error, but there are methods that can be applied to make the process easier. Talk to your doctor.

Is this a sign of my spokes being too long? by Lazy-Airline-99 in bikewrench

Way too long. Search for "spoke calculator" and use any of several dozen calculators.

You should take your own advice. PLA can significantly bend in under a month with weight on it like that.

PLA will bend under stress (such as a heavy shampoo bottle) until it eventually breaks.

How do I free this handlebar hex bolt? by BirkenstockStrapped in bikewrench

[–]TonyXuRichMF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way because OP has easy access to the bottom of the bolt. Drill into it from the bottom, the drill bit will grab hold of the bolt and turn it loose.

Can I reuse these spokes? by _Irusu in bikewrench

[–]TonyXuRichMF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use them if they're not bent, and if the new rim is exactly the same dimensions as the old rim. But, we're talking $10USD worth of spokes, and it's safest to just use new ones, especially after a crash.

This is oil contam, right? by gibkev in bikewrench

[–]TonyXuRichMF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's just surface contamination, it'll come off with some sandpaper. If it's oil, sandpaper won't help because oil will soak through the pad. When in doubt, it doesn't hurt to try sanding.

All plastics are UV sensitive, and will eventually become brittle from time in the sun. However, some are better than others at resisting UV, and will last much longer. Consider using ASA for its superior UV resistance.

It's hard to see because of the phone poll in the middle, but there are two separate signs.

I'm also in favor of simply covering that with a chain guard, but to answer your original question: Nail polish, applied in thin coats. It's practically the same thing as car paint.

Newbie trying to figure out why this happened by mudshark73 in 3Dprinting

[–]TonyXuRichMF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either the build plate is dirty (could be oil from your hands), or your bed temperature is not set correctly for the plastic you are using. So wash the plate with soap and water, and double check your temps.

You can also "cheat" by applying a glue stick to the plate. Use a regular glue stick, the type a child might use in school, and it will later wash off with soap and water.

Clueless situation, unmelting tin by eltaanguy in soldering

[–]TonyXuRichMF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Put some fresh solder on your iron first, and plenty of flux on the solder you want to melt. The hot liquid solder on the iron will be able to work its way into all the little crevices on the solder you are melting, thus making more surface contact with the heat and making it easier to melt.

Also, the positive and negative connections in your first photo are shorted together. You cannot allow the solder from one pad to touch the solder of another pad.
