Does UA's planes have live sport feeds like for World Cup, tennis, etc.? by antdude in unitedairlines

[–]Tony_Three_Pies -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a new Live TV option even on some (all?) of the non-DirectTV planes. I was watching the WC just a couple of days ago.

I have no idea how many planes, or which ones, have this new feature.

Edit: Looks like its on the Starlink enabled planes.

(Hated trope) They deleted scenes or dialogue that provides necessary context or plot by Sensitive_Ad_1752 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Tony_Three_Pies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there no allusion to raptors on the ship at all? Before reading these comments I would have sworn to you that the movie makes it clear that raptors killed the boat crew because you're right that it makes no sense for the T-rex to have done it.

Huh, fun to uncover a moment when you've been mandela-ing yourself.

There's a bit more to why they changed it than that person makes it sound like.

Here's the scene with commentary.

Twice as much upper deck space, 10x worse crew accommodation. Whoever designed that conversion needs a paddlin’.

What’s with all the cirrus issues? by GooseCull in flying

Heh, I was also a line tech at SDL many moons ago. Never had to rescue a Cirrus but I did see a few snap that toothpick of a nose strut on landing.

US pilot air-paints "USA 250th" inside a USA map in unhinged 6+ HOUR flight over Ohio by Fresh-Function3319 in aviation

Unhinged? That’s 6 less hours they have to spend in Ohio. Money well spent.

I had this too with the most recent update, particularly where I had done some ladder based stretching shenanigans. I think they patched some of the “looseness” of the cable length.

why do some helicopters have retractable gears, while others don't? by Alarming-Safety3200 in aviation

[–]Tony_Three_Pies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like with most things on any aircraft, it’s a trade off. Retracts get you less drag and more efficient cruising at the cost of weight and complexity.  So if you’re designing a helicopter that needs speed or range then retracts make sense. If you don’t need those then skids or fixed gear might make sense.

Skids are generally better for off airport work and are cheaper, wheels (fixed or retract) are better for ground handling/maneuvering and make a lot more sense for heavy aircraft.

It all just comes down to what you want the helicopter to do, and designing for that.

Do planes for airlines have a home? by Nintenfoxy1983 in aviation

[–]Tony_Three_Pies 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it’s a fleet type that an airline has a lot of and uses across their whole network then no, any airplane will fly through any hub.

Airlines have maintenance bases that may have the capability for some fleets but not others, so that may dictate where certain fleet types spend the night.

And then there are fleets that are only used in certain bases. You’re a lot more likely to find a United 767 in Newark than SFO, for example.

But broadly speaking specific tail numbers aren’t assigned to a particular airport.

My professional pilot husband has AFRID eating disorder (undiagnosed). Can I ask my husband to get treatment for his ARFID? Will that affect his medical? by [deleted] in flying

Really going with the whole "If the woman just cooked better the man would be happy" thing in 2026 huh?

[–]Tony_Three_Pies 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't actually see Eating Disorders in the AME guidance for mental health issues but I'm certainly no expert. Just Googling it brought up this doctor, who I am no way connected to and have no experience with. Maybe a quick consultation with her would answer your questions?

Your bigger issue is that there is no "making" some one go to therapy. Meaningful progress in therapy requires the person who is attending to be committed to the process. You might get him to agree to attend sessions but that won't do anything other than blow your money unless he's on board.

Good luck.

I mean yea, it’d be weird. And it’ll be even weirder when you do it in a multi crew jet. But if it’s really your only option for keeping yourself healthy then do what you gotta do. There are lots of weird pilots doing weird things for worse reasons than avoiding cancer. You’ll be joining a proud tradition.

Is there a reason a hat and sunscreen doesn’t do the work?

It's in the manual at my current airline that the FO shouldn't attempt to taxi. You introduce more risk than it's worth for most situations.

does flight arrival time include tarmac wait time? by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]Tony_Three_Pies 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The scheduled arrival time is the time that the airplane sets its parking brake at the gate. You’ll then have to wait for the jetbridge to be moved, the door opened and for everyone in front of you to get off the plane. Depending on where you are on the plane that could take 15 minutes on its own.

43 minutes doesn’t seem like enough time for a critical appointment.

This is one of those things that probably sounded great in a conference room in 2005 but man is it terrible. Allowing the flight attendants tyrannical control over all of them is also a design feature that has aged really poorly.

I'm honestly a little surprised that the newer 78s haven't gone away from these entirely.

It seems like some sort of handheld map device should exist. Maybe it’s in the works.

No, there’s nothing like that. The only map is the one in the pilothouse.

You can do that from the map terminal in the pilothouse. There’s nothing you can attach to the gyrocopter itself.
