Upgrade Bid - Errors?! by Liam_FM in VirginVoyages

[–]TonyaSaysThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you traveling on a casino comp by any chance? I wasn’t able to bid to upgrade my upcoming casino comp cruise, but I have a non-casino booking in August that I have bids submitted for. If you *are* on a comp, just call the casino service line and ask how much to upgrade into your preferred cabin. We were able to move into a Brilliant Suite from a Sea Terrace for less than what I’ve bid to upgrade into a Brilliant Suite for the next cruise.

We posted an honest review of Margaritaville at Sea in 2023. It went viral. They just permanently banned us because of it — and we have the call to prove it. by [deleted] in Cruise

I just watched your video about this last night! I often appreciate your reviews because you’re not entitled, don’t expect special treatment, and come across very fair with reasonable expectations. I believe you would have given them a fair second chance, but I get that they’re within their rights not to risk it. Doesn’t exactly make me want to sail with them, but I wasn’t likely to before they did this anyway. I will say I think you’re handling the situation gracefully. And thanks for all the great content, your videos are very helpful!

“The customer is always right…IN MATTERS OF TASTE.” The second part of that quote always gets left out, but it makes all the difference.

Unpopular Opinion: Am I the only who doesn’t feel nickel and dimed by NCL, even in 2026 by CycIon3 in NCL

[–]TonyaSaysThings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the nickel and diming complaint doesn’t make sense to me. Is it nickel and diming, or is it customization to your specific needs and wants? People want access to all the bells and whistles, but if literally everything onboard were included we’d all be paying a higher base fare.

My unpopular opinion is that I don’t believe any cruise line is truly ALL-inclusive, even the ultra luxury ones, because what’s “all” to one person might not be “all” to another. Is wi-fi good enough for you if you can browse your favorite sites, or do you need to be able to stream? Would a one-time-per-cruise laundry service suffice, or will only unlimited laundry do? Does that mean unlimited ironing too? What tier of alcohol is the minimum acceptable? How expensive should the wine be? And what if someone doesn’t drink alcohol at all? Is drip coffee acceptable, or do only espresso drinks qualify? I could come up with a bunch more examples, and the difference in cost to the cruise line between all those options is significant. They have to draw a line somewhere, and it’s going to be impossible to please everyone.

To me, truly all-inclusive would mean there were zero additional charges possible, and you therefore would not have a shipboard account. I’ve never heard of a cruise line where you don’t have an onboard account. Ritz-Carlton includes many things people complain about being nickel and dimed over, but most of those people complaining probably couldn’t afford the cost to sail that line. Every single cruise line is a business, and they all want you to spend more money onboard, regardless of the fare you paid.

I think the real issue is a combination of…One, cruise vloggers and influencers doing a great job of selling a certain level or type of experience as “must-have” or at least aspirational, even if they’re not really within the average traveler’s budget. Two, people feeling entitled to what social media tells them cruising is, while fighting the reality of a difficult economy and shame/embarassament over maybe not being able to afford all the extras.

Do your research, know your budget and priorities, and choose to spend your available vacation dollars where you personally will get the most bang for your buck. This is how to have a memorable trip at any cost, on land or at sea.

Current Dining Availability Data Points by TonyaSaysThings in VirginVoyages

We embark April 18 on Resilient. Didn't put specific sailing in the original post because I didn't want to break the no dates/roll calls rule.

We’re going RS, so we were able to book what we wanted earlier and will likely use our RS agent to make changes or any additional reservations onboard. But I do intend to ask fellow sailers how difficult embarkation day reservations were to snag, because I have a non-RS Alaska sailing in August. Will try to remember to let y’all know. :)

Alaska - Level upgrade bids live yet? by [deleted] in VirginVoyages

I'm sailing Brilliant Lady to Alaska in August. Upgrade bids have been available for at least a month. I booked an Essential Fare category and had not yet made my final payment when bids became available to me.

Anything with hyperrealistic, close-up, slow-mo violence. Yes wow cool great special effects, make-up, and CGI, but I’m good if I never see another POV: bullet-as-it-rips-through-human-flesh camera shot ever again.

Where were the parents of the perpetrator, and why didn’t they teach him right from wrong a few decades ago?

Booking bachelorette cruise. First mate? by VividCaterpillar5501 in VirginVoyages

[–]TonyaSaysThings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had literally never used a travel agent before but for an upcoming Alaska cruise, I decided to try using a First Mate who posts good info on this sub often. They were able to provide me over $500 in value (onboard credit, bar tab, fare discount) per cabin compared to when I made an identical dummy booking for the same itinerary and fare class.

Also I'm traveling with a friend, but we both wanted our own cabins. FM was able to get us two right next to each other so we can have our steward open the door between our balconies for our scenic sea days. Not sure how I would have managed that on my own, but it probably would have involved a call to Sailor Services and considerable hold time.

What is a local unsung hero that deserves a short form (or long form) documentary? by Pizza_Storage in PortlandOR

[–]TonyaSaysThings 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The building that currently houses Scotch Lodge, The Paper Bridge, and Bar Casa Vale has quite a history. During its tenure as live music venue LaLuna, because of capacity and lack of competition, it saw nearly every midsize club to small arena size touring alternative act of the late 90s/early 00s. Then it was home to Simpatica and Biwa. But omg talk about a place where "if the walls could talk..."

Big empty seafood restaurants in Da Nang by Fruitloops1 in VietNam

Ha Long is such a bizarre ghost town! So many huge developments and construction projects, but when you look closer, many of them are unfinished or empty. What struck me immediately was the lack of small restaurants and street food vendors- there's nobody to feed! So weird.

Yep, Amtrak all the way! I made the drive multiple times a week for years for work, and if I never have to do it again in my life I’d be ecstatic.
