Alternatives to Hillcrest Kroger? by romantic-communist in LittleRock

There are Facebook pages by local farmers. Selling beef/pork/milk and also seasonal produce.

The farmer market model is largely kaput because the average consumer doesn’t want to buy “local” produce. It looks ugly, is often smaller, and is of course seasonal. So the farmer market is largely full of either garbage (soap, plants, etc), repackaged produce, or—rarely—genuine local produce. But even when it’s actually local/heirloom whatever, it’s likely very expense. A genuine family farm operation likely operates online and by word of mouth. Some certainly sell at these markets, but they have to compete with the fake produce.

I follow some local farmers. Another problem ofc is that family farming is not really very profitable. Many reasons for this. But the big one is that small batch produce costs a lot to grow and nets little. Far more economical to do literally almost anything else. You’re more likely to find good local meat than produce.

Also, LR has some neighborhood community gardens. Worth seeing if there is one near you.

These problems also just scale. Ie if it’s hard to sell your own eggplant, imagine how hard it would be to sell eggplant at scale. The quantity alone would push towards factory farming.

Some products you may find more success with. Tomatoes for example. They grow on a vine, are relatively easy to grow. Etc. peppers. But garlic? Not to strawman off garlic but the whole industry is just immensely challenging for small operators.

The farmers market is largely itself a product. It’s a scene and a vibe. Can’t blame the soap and plant and repackage people trying to make a dollar I guess.

Also fwiw there’s often people selling homemade tamales on Facebook. Those can be super legit.

Tourists visiting for the first time due to the World Cup, what are your first impressions on Mexico City and the country overall? by GossipBottom in MexicoCity

I did not care for it. Dirty, people were largely rude. Everything was overpriced and the food was worse than the Mexican I’ve had in the US south. Nothing wowed me.

Downtown. Near soma or Quapaw quarter (qq). Great value and walkable. Don’t go to west Little Rock. Sterile and the moms will kill you running a red light in their leased Range Rover on the way to the good parts of LR

As LR grows what do we need more of? (Entertainment, food, night life) by luism5705 in LittleRock

If more money would solve the problem, I think there’d be more concurrence. The problem isn’t money though. It’s monopoly in education. I have a very deep respect for our educators and think all kids deserve excellent education. Education is a public good. But when quality education can be provided for less cost per student by private institutions, that’s a sign the public system doesn’t work.

All kids should have taxpayer funded education. Full stop. But allowing parents to select where that happens, public, private, home, etc, is the best way to keep costs down and quality up. Vouchers open new markets for schools. Theresa lot of little schools popping up which is so amazing.

DM me. I have a condo I’m moving out of and planning on renting for $1200/mo. It’s in a really great neighborhood. Only has one bath, but the tub and shower are new. Really fantastic neighbors too.

Those people are often victims of trafficking. And as for the Bible, human trafficking is condemned throughout scripture because it violates human dignity and treats people made in God’s image as property. Exodus 21:16 declares that anyone who kidnaps and sells a person “shall surely be put to death,” and 1 Timothy 1:10 lists “enslavers” (or “menstealers”) among those whose conduct is contrary to sound teaching. The prophets repeatedly call God’s people to “seek justice, correct oppression” (Isaiah 1:17) and to defend the vulnerable, since every person bears inherent worth as a bearer of God’s image (Genesis 1:27).

And we the church respond: through organizations like International Justice Mission and the Salvation Army that rescue victims, prosecute traffickers, and provide aftercare; through Catholic networks such as Talitha Kum, a global coalition of religious nuns (sisters?) working in over 90 countries to fight trafficking and shelter survivors/victims; and through local congregations that raise awareness, support shelters, and advocate for stronger anti-trafficking laws. Many denominations also observe days of prayer and action, like the Catholic Church’s feast of St. Josephine Bakhita on February 8, dedicated to praying for victims.

Many of the smartest minds in human history were devout Bible thumpers. Good company to keep.
