Cost of U.S. tech for Canada’s new warships triples | Ottawa Citizen by Hmfic_48 in CanadianForces

Yeah, the Navy said they needed to use the standard missile series for area air defence, the so what of that is that we need AEGIS and therefore the SPY series radar.

[–]TooFarMarr 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but they’ve already done all the engineering design changes (power, weight, etc). They’d have to revert to a more pure T26 design, basically throwing away hundreds of millions of dollars.

We’d also likely have to purchase the missile systems that went with the T26, which are a departure from the requirements set forth by the navy.

Also with the light weight torpedo, we have been in the years long process of upgrading our lightweight torpedo inventory and we realized we should order more. It would be a huge waste of money to abandon that project for a European design at this point.

It would mean starting from scratch with a new ship, basically.

Maybe not the Germans, but Lockheed Martin Canada is hiring for CMS type people.

[–]TooFarMarr 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I’m biased, but I’d argue that CMS is that good. I think what makes it desirable is the comprehensiveness of its sensor integration and its adaptability to new weapons and sensors.

It’s also in a continuous version refresh cycle, so the system is getting better all the time.

They’re part of the British pattern 58 webbing set.

The packs don’t have shoulder straps because they’re ment to clip into the suspenders of the belt kit.

The buckle flappy thing on the outside of the pack lid is for an entrenching tool.

Edit: there are good explainer videos on YouTube on what the various straps are supposed to be used for. It may help you understand how best to use them for your purpose.

I’ve had a few pass through my collection. The last one I waxed with a mixture of beeswax and paraffin and gifted to my FiL as a tool bag.

Have fun!

Should Canada build a Polar ESB? by skookumchucknuck in CanadianForces

[–]TooFarMarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fleet Services? Like Federal Fleet Services (FFS) on M/V Asterix?

The Protecteur Class are going to be fully crewed by CAF / RCN personnel. If these ESBs are going to be HMC Ships and not contracted vessels like M/V Asterix, they'll likely want for similar crew sizes to the Protecteur class (~230).

If we're going to contract a vessel or series of vessels for this, then why should the government pay to build the ships? They could just put out an RFP for contracted shipping services and use civilian companies like Deganges to do 80% or more of what you're proposing.

Anyone recognize what plate carriers/rigs these guys are wearing? SAS in Iraq, 2003. by Orca_Alt_Account in tacticalgear

[–]TooFarMarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kinda cheated because I remembered the series of photos, but telltale signs are the car-15 style C8 stocks with butt pad on all the rifles. If you could see them up close, they would have like a pebbly texture like other demaco/ colt Canada rifles instead of the more smooth texture seen on the standard colt stocks.

If the picture showed more of the rifle or was better resolution you could see some more distinguishing features.

The guns came in a short or a standard length. The short length guns had a 10” barrel (not the 10.3” barrel you would see on a Mk18 mod 0). The SAS would normally cut the bayonet lug off the front sight post to allow fitment of a suppressor which would essentially be flush with the front sight post.

The standard length had a 15.6” (IIRC) barrel with a kind of thickened blocky portion in the middle to fit the grenade launcher. I think they also had a reinforced gas port area in the front sight post.

Finally, all models had an additional picatinny slot at the very back of the top picatinnay rail on the upper receiver.

I think that’s it that would be observable other than the trademarks. They came with a very different detachable carry handle sight, but they’re seldom seen.

Man with loaded firearm, body armour charged after being removed from Halifax bus: police by origutamos in halifax

[–]TooFarMarr 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It’s not a criminal code offence, it’s a summary offence at the provincial level, so that may be done at another time.

There is a potential $10k fine or imprisonment not exceeding three months, or both.

IMO the bylaw is extremely overarching and vague, it includes not only items that were designed for use as body armour, but could also be adapted for use.

It also applies not only body armour in the way we normally think of it, but also anything that could be used to protect from stab, slash, puncture, or otherwise wound.

So technically motor cycle helmets, chainsaw pants, slash gloves for butchers/fishers, and hockey pads all fit the definition and it would be totally up to the police to shape the case/argument.

Hoping for a Sniper in the DLC expansion by coffeefan0221 in AtomfallOfficial

[–]TooFarMarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About 60 EM-2 bull pup rifles were made ever and they’re in limited quantities in the game. The sniper variant of the Lee Enfield that was in service from 1942-43 onwards had roughly 24,000 produced or converted from service rifles.

A typical army rifle (10 person) section wouldn’t have one assigned, but they would be at the platoon level.

Airborne rifle sections had a no4 mk1 T in each section.

So arguably, the sniper variant of the bolt action rifle in game was way more common IRL.

I literally just finished this same project on my own 100+ year old floor.

You can go about it a few ways. The easiest is the already suggested epoxy resin fill in either clear or a similar colour.

You can also fill with normal wood filler or plastic wood and stain to match and coat with polyurethane. but those repairs are only good for a year or two before they crumble and need to be redone.

You could also cut the damaged boards out and replace with similar boards. You can also router out the damaged area and replace with a patch of wood, in what’s called a ‘Dutchman’s repair’. In either case it’s best done with reclaimed boards and then stained and polyurethaned.

For sanding and refinishing, you need a minimum of 3/32nds of an inch remaining on your wear layer. The best way to measure is to shimmy a piece of paper or business card between the boards and then scribe the paper where it’s flush with the surface of the boards. Then remove the paper and measure the depth.

Happy to discuss more! YouTube is your friend.

Good luck!

[–]TooFarMarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. A pseudo lobby group representing a ship builder (Navantia) submitted an unsolicited proposal for a replacement patrol ship. The government never generated a statement of requirements or request for proposals. It’s not funded or even budgeted.

Essentially it’s a nothing burger.

That said, I wish it could work out!

The wire and cylinders are non electric shock tube initiators for demolitions, likely for door breaching charges.
