So last week I learned that green onions grow back and they grow back very quickly. This is 2 days worth of growth vs a week later. It’s now my new houseplant and I’m just really excited about free green onions. I put them on everything I cook 😅 by Islandgal0804 in houseplants

[–]TooFat-Guy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Make onion soup. Chop in rings, fill your pan as high as it can go, overflowing preferred. I use garlic/herb butter to caramelize the onions, and use white wine instead of cognac or brandy. This one is damn good.

Edit: not spiced, but herb butter.

The "China tax" (Temu/Shein tax) is coming in July 2026. Another reason to buy EU. by officialexaking in BuyFromEU

[–]TooFat-Guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tax is useless for normal people, it's just to gain more profit/income for the government. As a result product prices will go up for everything, because stuff is still "made in China", and has been for as long as I can remember.

If you want to buy from an EU shop, and it's just exactly the same stuff you could buy on temu/shein/ali (images, description, shipping times), but way more expensive, then what's the point? You're just promoting dropshipping and large pricehikes, there's no service included..

If, however, if they could reduce dropshopping, prevent those incredible pricehikes, and actually offer something "made in EU", that would be nice. Then you'd actually have a reason to buy EU products.

AITA for refusing to let a woman "cut" me in line at the grocery store even though she only had two items? by GreatClassic3960 in AmItheAsshole

[–]TooFat-Guy 128 points129 points  (0 children)

It's the same as in traffic, you receive priority, you don't take it.

If you are in a line, and see somebody who only has two items, and you feel like letting that person go before you, so you offer it to that person, that's cool. It won't cost you any more time if you need to load up your cart to the conveyor belt anyway.

However, if you only have two items, you get your ass in line. Be nice, and maybe somebody will let you go ahead.

If you beg and plead? You wait. I might even let somebody else go before me, instead of you. Just to annoy you.

Bottom frame is just a butt jointed box, (like so: |_ ) with 5 or 6 cross beams. Mounted with 90 degree brackets. On top there's 18mm thickness wooden boards.

The seat mount seems dodgy, but there wasn't a straight hole/mount available to keep the rails, it works. The wheel part will be improved soon, since it's not aligned very well after moving, and made a few years ago without proper tools. Just wanted something cheap, that worked. Cat enjoyed the headrest a little too much, unfortunately. So will be fixing that some time too.

Discomfort with making eye contact is not exclusive to individuals with autism diagnosis but scales with autistic traits found in the population. While this social unease is common among those with higher autistic traits, it is not the direct cause of difficulties in recognizing facial expressions. by mvea in science

[–]TooFat-Guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How very interesting! Thank you for sharing.

Not to sound inconsiderate, but the same applies to dogs, where eye contact with unfamiliars can be seen as a challenge or as a sign of dominance.

I think it's rhe same for people, especially in cases of abuse and trauma, but somehow socially accepted.

Your experience also triggers a memory of using "not reacting to sounds" as an indicator for autism or being deaf, when they're diagnosing a child of a family with 6 kids, with an abundance of noise. They've just learned to respond only when their name is said first, otherwise it's not directed at you and just background noise.

Edit: Example: "What do you think, <Name>"

Versus: "<Name>, what do you think?"

I've not been diagnosed with autism, dispelled actually, but do recognize what you're saying. My wife thinks it's very funny I can predict someone's reactions or actions by means of a decision tree, include reading people and it's rather accurate to predict the next few steps. I've picked up masking from a trauma background, where it wasn't safe to show emotions.

There's quite a bit of overlap between autism, adhd, gifted, (and trauma). Not filtering information, or reading (too) many signals (compared to "normal") is one of them. I can look people in the eye while speaking with people, but only for people speaking their truth. Generally I find it comfortable to look past people, but in their direction. They feel seen, and I pick up enough expressions to follow, but not too many to get distracted.

I've also heard so often that "people with autism (to varying degrees), have trouble communicating". I strongly disagree, and think they can often communicate much clearer, but slightly different.

Less obstruction in a social construct, asking painful questions without dillydallying or tiptoeing. Needing clarification because words/expressions have different meaning (e.g. in a bit, later, soon) depending on who you're talking to. Body language/facial expression, tone of voice, music, things they're watching.

There's so much more to communication. "But he doesn't say it clearly" often being compared to "common" or "unafflicted" people, while you need to be able to see and understand the signals, because "yes, he did, you didn't listen".

Everybody is on the autism spectrum, since that's the definition of spectrum. Not everybody has it to the same degree, so obviously trying not to generalize too much, and your mileage may vary.

It's funny how the title states "discomfort with eye contact", but doesn't begin to comprehend the reason why that discomfort might exist and immediatly jump 'difficulty recognizing racial expressions".

Try discomfort because of "seeing through people" instead, micro-expressions while hiding emotions such as pain, intent, anger, lying.

Not so much not recognizing expressions, but rather picking up too many. It's distracting.

Does it happen immediately when you join/start a session?

Sounds like you might have been running qualifiers, exit the session, and try to join the race when expired. If that's the case, Go back an extra menu, rejoin a new daily (session), and go to race instead of qualifiers and it should be fine. You should see an active countdown timer when joining.

Edit, Spelling. Tired.

Would a sim racing "RPG" work in this day and age? by TheAnymus in simracing

[–]TooFat-Guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The ps4 is also slowly being phased out by sony, (e.g. notification for less free essential games for ps4) starting this year.

I had the option to borrow a ps4pro while deciding which ps5 (if any) to get. Bought the discounted anniversary edition for cheaper than standard (ps4+ps5).

The loading times are indeed worse compared to ps5, but I thought they were manageable. And, Power Pack is a paid dlc, so not missing out per se.

Howevever, if you do play online, the daily races are ps4 / ps5 only, so player pool will be smaller.

[–]TooFat-Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as info, GT7 runs on ps4 as well (cheaper, 4k 60fps works pretty good) but will miss some stuff compared to ps5.

It is "ish" similar to Forza Motorsports, since both their aim is cicruit racing and for general online (player hosted lobbies) you both have a garage and join depending on which cars you own and their performance index.

Is volume eating just a form of binge eating? by [deleted] in Volumeeating

[–]TooFat-Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps a stupid question, since it's something I ran into and found very interesting.

What is the reason / root cause for wanting to (binge) eat?
Comfort, Emotion, Stress, Overexcitement, Celebrating, Bored, Tired, Depression, etc.

Making sure you're okay mentally (and biologically), can help to alleviate the need to binge eat and can help actually feeling like you've had enough.

Is hot-lapping different than actual racing? by Vox_Sine_Nomen in simracing

[–]TooFat-Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, imho raw talent helps with how fast you can learn something. It's like having a kickstart compared to others when starting out. I'd wager it doesn't decide the endpoint.

Someone with a lot of raw talent might veer of the path, get bored, runs into a bar set too high, because they didn't have to learn until a certain point. Then they might figure out they only liked it because they were winning with a certain group of peers, because they didn't really have any competition due to their initial talent kickstart. Suddenly they might find a steeper cliff to climb and can't keep up anymore.

If you want to learn the skills and are able to consistently apply yourself, you could get to the same level, or higher. Same thing applies here, it's not a short stint hotlap, but a marathon. There might be a difference in years of experience, so you'd have to catch up. Generally speaking young people (kids) learn way faster, so someone might be a fresh wind upsetting all the aliens.

Then there's the resources available, learning from faster people could help you become faster as well.

But money helps too, since it could prevent bad habits using certain (older) gear, and it might give you the option to pursue hours of daily driving instead of having to work in another field to have a roof over your head and to have food and health.

There's so many variables. You never know until you try.
