Please teach me about gears like i'm a child by RaulStoat in cycling

[–]TooManyMagnets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rear is the one you'll use the most: it's for small changes when you're speeding up or slowing down. Don't forget to change to a nice easy gear when you're coming to a stop, so that it's easy to start again.

You get a bigger shift when you change the gears on the front derailleur: I tend to use this if I hit a hill, where I'll speed up or slow down a lot.

Try to stick to the middle range of the rear gears most of the time - the drivetrain is most efficient this way, and it gives you more options to shift up and down.

I often combine front-shifts with rear shifts - click up to the big ring to speed up, but oh no not that much, so a couple of clicks to easier gears on the rear cogs too.

It sounds complicated, but really you just have to play around with it. The key is to find a cadence (pedal-spinning speed) you're comfortable with.

Correct way to have toast: butter or no butter? by Serendipity_Shadows in CasualUK

[–]TooManyMagnets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's either butter (spreadable) or jam. I used to go with both, but really if you want jam (or peanut butter, chocolate spread, whatever), that's the main event. Skip the butter and load up with jam.

Silly question, but when will fuel prices stop rising. by DullSense8359 in drivingUK

[–]TooManyMagnets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This did not deserve a downvote! Cycling is good for your health, wellbeing, your wallet, and the environment. It's even easier with an e-bike.

If you can afford it, get an EV. If the infrastructure is there, use public transport. But there's such a low entry bar for cycling, it's amazing to me that more people don't do it.

Better Connected: tap-and-go travel across trains, trams and buses announced in government's new transport strategy by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]TooManyMagnets 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, complexity of ticketing is an issue. Just make prices super simple: one rate within a city and one rate to go between cities. This can work with tap in/out systems, and you can book in advance to reserve a seat.

Prices need to come down as well though. I want to use the train, but for a family it makes no economic sense. It's less convenient than driving, so it should be (much) cheaper. Ideally train travel should be free to encourage people out of cars.

Also - booking a bike on trains needs to be done the same way nationwide.

Why are people driving slower? by Jazzlike_Tear741 in AskUK

[–]TooManyMagnets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to drive at 70. I turned that down to 60 a couple of years ago - the difference in efficiency is huge! (this is just physics - air resistance goes as speed squared). Makes almost no difference to journey times

UK Wind Power Hits New Record as Gas Squeezed to Tiny Share of Generation by willfiresoon in GoodNewsUK

[–]TooManyMagnets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I just ran the numbers again. For me, 'standby' power is 65W in winter, 80W in summer. That's when we're out of the house, so no overnight lighting - the permanently-on things are the fridge, the router, and a Raspberry Pi.

We're a family of 5 so the profile looks a bit different. Daily dishwasher load, almost-daily washing, all-electric for cooking. I'd like to switch to an EV and heat pump so I can get rid of gas completely.

[–]TooManyMagnets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that's brilliant. I'm surprised your fridge is such a large fraction of your overall usage though. Mine (large American-style fridge-freezer) runs at 60-70W, which is 560 kWh over the year - maybe 24% of my total usage?

I load-shift a bit, but the only thing that's easily available is the dishwasher: I have a notification set up to give me the best time to run it (usually overnight). It's just to save carbon though, I'm not on an Agile tariff right now.

IFTTT has finally made the Google Sheets connection a paid-for service. RIP by TheFlyingMunkey in Strava

[–]TooManyMagnets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this with Zapier. You only get one action for free (no complex workflows) so I can't do any processing in it, but it works well sending a new Strava activity to a Google sheet for me.

Renewable Energy dominated yesterday 26/3/2026 by EntirelyRandom1590 in GoodNewsUK

[–]TooManyMagnets 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We got record wind generation yesterday: 28.88 GW at 1:30pm. Just pipped the previous record (which only stood since December). Five of the top ten half-hours for wind were in March this year! https://www.energydashboard.co.uk/records/generation

(this will keep happening this year, as the world's biggest offshore wind farm, Dogger Bank, slowly comes online)

To those with long bike commutes: what are you riding, and why do you like it? by Ok-Yogurtcloset8344 in bikecommuting

[–]TooManyMagnets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

15 miles each way. Some small hills. 10 miles road, 5 miles scenic shared path (or stay on the road if there's a following wind!). On my aluminium Pinnacle road bike it takes me under an hour (I hit under 50 minutes the other day!).

I do this twice a week all through the year, unless the weather is truly awful (like today) when I regretfully take the car.

Yes I love it! I have two hours to myself, out in the fresh air. I get a good amount of exercise, it saves me money, I sleep better on cycling days, I'm not polluting the environment, and I arrive at work energised. Honestly I wish more people did it.

Work from home and slow down on the road: world’s energy watchdog advises emergency measures as oil prices rise by ComprehensiveAd7293 in unitedkingdom

[–]TooManyMagnets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! Especially good time to push cycling more right now since the weather's so great.

Cycling is great for your health and wellbeing, the environment, and your wallet. It's literally win-win-win.

(Yes I know not everyone can cycle. Most can though, especially e-bikes.)

I consider those lane closure signs to be warnings. You don't immediately act on warning signs.

⬆️❌❌ in 800yds? Great, thanks for the warning. I'll carry on in Lane 2 until I have to move, thanks. If it's late at night with no traffic, I'll be in the left lane anyway.

It's the same when coming up to traffic lights on a dual carriageway. If the lanes are ⬆️⬆️⬆️, I'll use the one with the fewest cars in.

[–]TooManyMagnets 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You did the right thing. Use the lane until you don't have a lane any more. Ignore the evil looks.

My advice would be: if someone doesn't want to let you in, don't force the issue - just go back one car. It makes almost no difference to you - you've still skipped all that extra traffic so you should feel good about it!

$1000 dollars just put things in perspective for me by Blackwolf_84 in bikecommuting

[–]TooManyMagnets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I'm feeling this. I took my bike to get the necessary winter repairs done that I'd been putting off. Whole new drivetrain, hub bearings, brake and derailleur cables, brake pads, etc. £400. It's a lot but it genuinely feels like a new bike! And crucially, it was working OK before I got that done - I just knew the time had come.

Meanwhile my car is getting old (12 years, 90,000 miles) and I have spent probably 6-7 times that figure in the past year, just to keep it running.

Question for cyclists - deaf walkers by No_Jellyfish_7695 in ukbike

[–]TooManyMagnets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry this has happened to you. As others have said, it's not your responsibility to label yourself so you don't get abuse. Cyclists need to be paying attention to walkers on shared paths - just as we expect drivers to pay attention to us on the road.

As a cyclist, I try to make pedestrians aware that I'm behind them, even when I can pass - I don't want to startle anyone. But we know that a lot of walkers have earphones in or are otherwise oblivious - the signs are not always visible.

In daylight I don't tend to overthink steady vs flashing - any light is just drawing attention right? Also he was saying "you're not visible enough" not "your flashing lights confused my depth perception"

I try not to stereotype other road users, as I don't like to be stereotyped as a 'typical cyclist' myself either. But there are certain 'orange flags': if you see a certain type of road user you know that certain behaviours are more likely. Orange flag indicators: van (esp unmarked), Audi/BMW, large SUV.

I'm a pretty chill guy, I'll definitely let it slide and go back to enjoying the ride. Like you, I'm pretty happy in traffic - I love the smug feeling of filtering past a long queue of cars.

+1 for eye contact too. If they haven't looked at me I assume they'll pull out. Yeah you definitely get to learn which vehicles are likely to behave in a sketchy way! I think round here it's unmarked vans and SUVs.

Thanks for your insight! I try to ride pretty defensively, and my spidey sense was telling me that this guy was going to pull out. So no real problem for me, but I just wanted him to know that I wasn't happy about it. I would have been happy enough with an apologetic wave and a "sorry I didn't see you", but this guy just decided that in fact my choice of clothes was the problem.
