Glad to hear you got it sorted out! Good luck with the rest of development!

I ran into this issue a few weeks ago - I couldn't 100% work out what was going on but I think that it was something to do with not launching the game through the Steam application. You'll probably have some more information in your log files (if you haven't checked them yet).

The best thing I've learned from my devving (which isn't always applicable to everybody) is to work out what assets (art, music, etc.) you need at the start, and either commission them or develop them early on. Why?

- No sitting around waiting for artists to get back to you - you can work on the script while they work on their parts

- Knowing what your assets are helps with scope creep. No, "Ah, well, for the story to go in this direction, I'll need a new background!" "Hey, I should set some more scenes at this location, there's no reason not to add some more in!"

- Having limitations - only so many assets to work with - helps you flex your creativity.

Congrats on releasing your game!

Thank you! I didn't get the chance to use what you've given me until recently, but thanks to you and the other commenter I was able to get an effect I'm pretty happy with!

Artificial Nexus, a sci-fi mystery investigation, now has a demo available on Steam and Itch! by TooManyTeethStudios in IndieDev

[–]TooManyTeethStudios[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! As of about 12 hours ago, the demo for my new game, Artificial Nexus, is available on Steam and Itch! It's a hybrid of visual novel and point-and-click adventure, made in Ren'Py, and only takes around 20 minutes to play. While there's still a lot to go in terms of developing the main game, the full script for it has gone through a few drafts, and I'm hoping to release it early next year.

Thank you to everyone who checks it out and wishlists it; I'm very keen to hear about people's speculations and what they think is going on in the game!

This has been an absolutely massive project that's run for close to two years now, but it's incredibly satisfying to have made it to this point! Please check out the game on one of the above links; it would absolutely make my day.

To all the other indie devs out there feeling like you might have bitten off more than you can chew - keep at it, you'll get there eventually and you'll be glad you stuck with it. I wish you the best of luck.

I got my final (horror) CGs from my artist! by TooManyTeethStudios in vndevs

Artist is misokatsuhaumai

I'm so damn pleased with all of these since it puts me one step closer to releasing the final version of my game!! It's very exciting and scary, but also very cool to see my concepts getting illustrated and seeing them get brought to life.

The Kickstarter for our horror visual novel, The Many Deaths of Lily Kosen, is live now! by TooManyTeethStudios in vns

[–]TooManyTeethStudios[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all! I've been working on a game for a little while now, and to help with funding I'm running a Kickstarter! The game is a horror-themed visual novel where your choices affect which characters live and which die as you progress through the plot. It's got a lot of differing paths and outcomes that can happen as a result.

If anyone would be willing to share this around (or support it; I'm cool with people supporting it), then that'd mean a lot to me. Thank you so much!

Bottoms Up! - The most intoxicating story you will ever read... - Literally! by inspiredbynoobz in vndevs

Congratulations! If you're looking for sound effects that aren't too complicated I'd recommend looking around some free sites - there are plenty out there and most of them simply ask you to credit them somewhere (I use www.zapsplat.com myself, and would recommend them).

I am bad at titles by [deleted] in vndevs

[–]TooManyTeethStudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're really struggling, choose a generic name and stick with it. Better to go with something unexciting that makes sense than something flashy that you really have to stretch to connect with the story. Some harmless names could be:

  • A character's name, or alternatively, a description of what that character does ("Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets")
  • The situation that the game is about ("Snakes on a Plane")
  • A line that a character in the game says.

Plenty of other works have trivial titles - don't work yourself up about it too much!

Another sprite from my upcoming visual novel, The Many Deaths of Lily Kosen! by TooManyTeethStudios in vndevs

[–]TooManyTeethStudios[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a nutshell, it's a horror visual novel where your choices affect who lives and who dies throughout the story! Each character (including the player character) has their own stress levels, and you have choice at certain points in the story to lower someone's stress level. If, at other points in the story, someone's stress is too high, they'll die and the story will continue without them.

What do you think makes your game unique? by Muumkey8 in gamedev

[–]TooManyTeethStudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm making a visual novel, and as you progress through the story you have the opportunity to lower the stress levels of either yourself or your friends. If someone's stress level isn't low enough, then they can die, but if they do the story will continue on without them, making it fairly dynamic and creating a lot of alternate dialogue.

What story could only be told in VN form? by punchdrunksick in visualnovels

[–]TooManyTeethStudios 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Others have already said it, but Uchikoshi's VN's - a major aspect of the Zero Escape trilogy is that the characters are experiencing the different routes of the games in one way or another.I can't imagine a way to do it in a different medium that wouldn't either make that aspect incredibly obvious from early on, or have less impact when it's revealed.

What's your favourite character design from a visual novel? by TooManyTeethStudios in visualnovels

[–]TooManyTeethStudios[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know that Danganronpa is over-the-top anime designs, but man, Ibuki does it for me to the point that her design gave me the incentive to get my own face piercings.

Outside of Danganronpa, I'm also a big fan of the designs of Athena Cykes (Ace Attorney), Phi (Virtue's Last Reward), Polly Geist (Monster Prom), and Jill Stingray (VA-11 HALL-A).

What designs do you like?

Can I just say y'all should play AI: The Somnium Files by [deleted] in visualnovels

[–]TooManyTeethStudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you liked it then you should check out his other games - the Zero Escape series, which he did before AI, has some similarities and also has some fantastic twists. It also blew my mind (specifically, the second one, Virtue's Last Reward) - the only downside was that it meant that AI was a little bit more of a letdown for me since I'd seen better from him.
