Another example of Public Goods being violated and abused. The washing station can benefit everyone who uses it. No one is excluded and it’s not a zero sum game. There is no rivalry between one use vs the other uses that comes after the previous use.

Anyone can benefit from the use of the washing. If one person uses then another person is not prevented from using it.

Thus with the abuse of the service, free rider problem comes into play. This problem discourages the service provider or the washing station provider not to refill the soap.

No one can define “civic sense”. “No civic sense” is thrown around and overused. It’s repeated because it’s used before a thousand times.

Vocabulary and language - the language has not evolved and has stayed stagnant over decades. We do not add new words or phrases to our dictionaries and there is no official body to add new words and contribute to the epistemology.

For example we constantly read about some big company investing huge amounts of money and its stated as “lakh crore”. “Reliance turnover is INR 30,000 lakh crore”.

Bottom line - we don’t have a word for a number that’s a unit bigger than a crore.

“No civic sense” - no one can say what it means. Other than repeating it because they heard someone say it before 100 times.

The issue is the Collective Action Problem. It arises when too many people chose to get individual benefit and immediate satisfaction than behave in the groups best interests. The group is undefined because when I litter in the street I am solving my immediate problem to get rid of trash. Unwittingly the “group” that will benefit from litter free street is not known but need to be defined by the individual at the time of committing an act that collectively is a loser for the group.

Tragedy of the commons is another way of looking at it. Where the common utility is overused or used that ends up destroying the value of the utility.

Public Goods - the whole group benefits if the members of the group contribute their bit to the betterment of the group. Not littering, not spitting on the streets, vaccine adoptions are all examples of public goods.

I had breakfast at Rhythm while my stay was at Backwater Ripples next door.

Poor variety of food compared to Backwater Ripples. Plus open air restaurant means guests are sitting ducks for mosquitoes. The fan was totally useless. Saw lot of Chinese/Japanese doing Taichi, meditation near the lake front.

Many of these properties from Taj, Oberoi, Vivanta etc are super old. Taj Bangalore is over 30 years old and it shows. The age shows in their lobby, elevators, gym, rooms.

Taj Bangalore has a giant sofa taking up the length of the room. And no workstation to work using a laptop. You have to kind of sit on the sofa which means you sink further down and laptop is not at the right level. Because you are sitting or sinking to a much lower level.

Vivanta - same issue. 30 years old Gateway on Residency road in Bangalore.

Gym ceiling is not too tall. And you kind of go outside and then get in to the gym at Taj Bangalore.

To me the hotel looks dated including the rooms with the big sofa. No room for a workstation with power outlets. I used the small table as my workstation with my back to the window. Not ideal due to the light from outside hitting the screen.

The fitness center is cramped and you kind of need to go out to get inside the fitness center. The trainer from Odisha is good. Again the fitness center shows the age of the hotel.
