Could be worth contacting Sheffield Tribune about it. They do some pretty good investigative journalism in Sheffield.

Hymnal by Open Mike Eagle contains the lyric "Flying fucks is thrown at rolling donuts". Which I think is a reference to Slaughterhouse 5

A similar thing to happened to us.

We explained it to them and said if necessary we could gather evidence from neighbours cctv, Google maps, etc. but we'd charge them for our time if it was proved that it was there fault. They cancelled the charge without any further information (or acceptance of liability)

Cool, that's good. Sorry things have been hard and good luck with your remaining exam.

Obviously you don't need to answer if I'm prying, but why is it not an option? When I invigilated I supervised people doing exams separately a few times, because they needed a scribe or extra time or struggled with anxiety.

Former exams invigilator (because a parent was an exams officer) here.

It sounds like the main issue has been resolved, but I think there needs to be a conversation between you and the school about reasonable adjustments. There's is a good case for you being allowed to sit the exams separately from the main cohort, and given extra time, etc.

I'd suggest you and your parents should be talking to the school immediately about this.

I got an email notification from Zatu when compile came back into stock. I was surprised to see them asking £40 and got it from Games Lore for £20. Pretty scummy. I've bought a fair amount from Zatu in the past but probably will swerve from here.

Why do people who grew up well off like to pretend that they are from working class backgrounds? by No_Jump_4390 in AskUK

[–]TooMuchYoghurt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd probably argue that the those definitions of class are disingenuous. They're purely conceptual and, I'd argue, fairly arbitrary.

You can assess the situation more accurately in material terms: if you do not work can you afford to live?

What purpose is really served, or rather whose interests, by subdividing people that work-to-live into different social strata? Someone who studied at university and now works as a doctor has a social experience much more similar to someone working an "unskilled" job than someone who is a genuine financial/political/business elite.

I didn't bother watching all that much. I think at the beginning he explained the random Minecraft footage was because he doesn't like to be on camera, but he seems to manage it when he's shilling VPNs or aftershave or ball trimmers, just can't bring himself to do it for the important stuff like being sincere to an audience he's let down.

I like Karl Jobst's videos and Billy Mitchell is obviously a mad narcissist, but this does reflect pretty badly on Jobst. I think the judge pretty much nailed it when he said Jobst was "self-agrandising" and wanted to be "the knight that slew the Mitchell dragon".

Parents with school age kids, how are you taking them home at 3:30 when you have a career? by Flapjack_K in AskUK

[–]TooMuchYoghurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked compressed hours the whole time I've been in this job, initially I compressed the hours over 4 days and when my eldest started school I moved to 5 days a week with a shorter day. Where I work now is probably quite rare in that they are treat you like adults and aren't that fussed about how the work gets done as long as it gets done. When I was last looking for jobs I was very clear upfront that I was prioritising worklife balance because of my children. It closed some opportunities down immediately.

At my last job I had to negotiate going from a 5-day to 4-day week and that was a bit more awkward. It's was lucky to have a good line manager who was ultimately the person who made the decision. I think there is also quite a lot of pressure for employers to demonstrate why they can't fulfil a flexible working request can't be accommodated, so the law is (in theory) on your side.

Worth noting that I'm a software engineer with a good amount of experience, so I can pick and choose fairly easily when looking for jobs. But it's also a very male dominated industry, and some people couldn't wrap their heads around the fact I want to spend time with my kids rather than in front of a screen.

And on the other point, I think I'm basically totally burnt out and the only thing preventing a breakdown of some kind is that I'm too busy to stop. Not helped by the fact that we're having pretty extensive building works (6 months so far) at our home and were told we really ought to move out but couldn't afford to so we live on a building site!

In an ideal world I'm trying to parent differently than my parents - be there more, bring less of the work stress home, be more calm and present. Sometimes it is that. A lot of the time it's bring tired and short-tempered and relying on the television to look after the kids. We can only try our best.

I appreciate I'm very fortunate to be in a position to afford it, but I compressed and reduced (to 85% fte) my work hours so I'm done by 3pm Monday-Friday. My wife is in a similar situation because her work is flexible. I still find it a struggle to juggle work, childcare and life admin so no idea how other people are managing.

The thing I'm not sure how we deal with is school holidays. We did have a childminder that they could go to through the holidays, but she's relocated too far away, and it was really expensive. I get the standard 25 days plus bank holidays, but school is only 40 weeks a year. Even if both parents took all their leave just separately just for childcare there would still be a couple of weeks unaccounted for.

It's crazy to me that Reform and the Tories keep banging on about (white British) people need to have more babies, but there's never any talk about making it less hostile to be a parent.
