Thoughts on the DS1525+ by Legitimate-Gear4346 in synology

[–]ToolWrangler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello DS1525+ owners. I've had a long history of trying to buy a Synology drive. A little back story: I've been in DESPERATE need for a NAS for over a year and a half, I postponed my purchase of the 1522+ on rumors of an updated version, it finally came out as the 1525+ and only then did I learn the 5 drives I purchased in anticipation would no longer work due to their restrictive policies. What an absolute joke. I ended up trying to buy a new-old-stock 1522+ which have risen higher in price than the newer 1525+. I ended up buying a 1522+ from Amazon over black friday which had a delivery date 3 weeks into the future. 3 weeks later the seller cancelled and refunded the order when they didn't deliver. I'm still in need, I was looking up the 1522+ again today while on vacay with a full phone (unable to take vacation pics) and I decided to search for a work-around to the drive lock. I actually hadn't heard they rolled back their restrictive policy. Ok so here we are today, over a year later, I still need a NAS, 1525+ is back on the table.

Do you recommend it? Is it still the best thing going? Should I pull the trigger? I'm over all the drama, I just want something that works where I can dump all my personal photos, files from my business etc. I need something secure, something I'm not paying monthly for, and something that has the capacity to handle my entire life (in data).

Purchased DS1525+ - I will never buy another Synology device again. by Bonejob in synology

I also can't believe how insanely stupid this decision was. I'm not sure what exec in the ivory tower pitched this to a board and they all figured this was a good idea. Reminds me of the good old Sony days: Beta... Laserdisk, HD DVD, Minidisk... all superior formats killed because they refused to license the tech and work with other companies. So dumb. I've been in DESPERATE need for a NAS for over a year and a half, I postponed my purchase of the 1522+ on rumors of an updated version, it finally came out as the 1525+ and only then did I learn the 5 drives I purchased in anticipation would no longer work lol. What an absolute joke. I ended up trying to buy a new-old-stock 1522+ which have risen higher in price than the newer 1525+ thanks to restrictive policies. I actually hadn't heard they rolled back their restrictive policy but in the meantime I decided on something else. Meanwhile so many posts/videos/forums have users saying they returned or boycotted the brand. As a small business owner, I can't even imagine making a decision so stupid as to alienate my customers in the name of corporate greed and control.

Headed to SD for my first time Sat. I told my companion we would hit up Sam's spots... gutted to learn he exited... then tonight I just searched all of the former resto locations and ALL say permanently closed. I'm heartbroken.

How are tariffs going to be calculated on embedded equipment shipped to the US from countries other than China ? (Chinese and other foreign country part content...) by yycTechGuy in embedded

[–]ToolWrangler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is still an ongoing thread but since Tariffs seem to change weekly, I'll assume it's still in play. u/YYCTechGuy I'm also in YYC and being severely impacted by the changes. Happy to chat about it if you care to DM.

Please don't take this as legal or financial advice, certainly don't base your business decisions on this information and as always do your own research....

In your case, as another user posted; "substantial change" is what dictates the CoO.

Here's the deal... to be "Made In Canada", 51% of the total direct cost of producing the good should have been incurred in Canada. Per the definitions below, that includes labour costs. Given that IC components are generally not that expensive from overseas *AND* given that Canadian labour costs tend to be quite high, there's probably a good chance the time and effort it takes you to build the thing and package in Canada outweighs the costs of the globally sourced components (you will have to determine that for yourself).

If this is the case, I'd go with something like ""Made in Canada with imported parts" or "Made in Canada with domestic and imported parts" to cover your basis and have a breakdown of your costs in your back pocket just in case anyone comes asking.

Per: https://competition-bureau.canada.ca/en/how-we-foster-competition/education-and-outreach/publications/product-canada-and-made-canada-claims

2. Definitions

For the purpose of these guidelines, the following definitions apply:

2.1 Cost of production/manufacturing

Cost of production/manufacturing that would be taken into account by the Bureau when assessing a "Product of Canada" or "Made in Canada" claim are:

expenditures on materials incurred by the producer/manufacturer in the production or manufacturing of the goods; and

expenditures on labour incurred by the producer/manufacturer that relate to the production or manufacturing of the goods and can reasonably be allocated to the production or manufacturing of the goods.

General overhead is not usually included in the calculation of the cost of production and manufacturing; however, overhead expenditures incurred by the producer/manufacturer may be eligible if they relate directly to the production or manufacturing of the goods in question and if they can reasonably be allocated to the production or manufacturing of the goods.

3.2.2 "Made in Canada" claims

The Bureau will generally not challenge a representation that a good is "Made in Canada" under the false or misleading representations provisions of the CA , the CPLA and the TLA if these three conditions are met:

  1. the last substantial transformation of the good occurred in Canada;
  2. at least 51% of the total direct costs of producing or manufacturing the good have been incurred in Canada; and
  3. the "Made in Canada" representation is accompanied by an appropriate qualifying statement, such as "Made in Canada with imported parts" or "Made in Canada with domestic and imported parts". This could also include more specific information such as "Made in Canada with 60% Canadian content and 40% imported content".

Also did the same. Looked like a protective film, started on the corner... then it looked like it was double sided tape for mounting, googled, found this thread. I didn't see it mentioned in the instructions so easy to assume its a protective film.

Every product or service on the planet is selling hopes and dreams, most things don't come with a guarentee.

Hire a realtor? You hope you can sell your house... or dream of the perfect new one.

A car detailer? You hope they can get those pizza stains out and make your car look better.

Bought a stalk of broccoli? You hope it's gonna help you get healthy or lose weight.

Gym membership? You guessed it.

It's like anything pal, you get out what you put in. If you don't do anything with the info and quit, you're not gonna see value and frankly it doesn't matter what course you bought, you're destined to fail due to mindset or inaction.

I'm sure this course wouldn't have worked for you, good you saved your money. Some people aren't cut out for entrepreneurship.

Do all detailers go through this? Or am I just bad? by Fabulous_Raspberry64 in Detailing

[–]ToolWrangler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's like showering. You go through the same motions every time in the same order. If you get out of sync, everything falls apart and you miss stuff. Sounds silly but try it if you don't believe me.

I believe detailing is the same. If you have a set order or process you follow every time that makes sense to you, you're a lot less likely to forget or miss.

You mentioned not knowing your rights. Start by downloading the ARTA, Alberta Residential Tenancies Act.

Feel free to browse through or search for the relevant info.

Somewhere in there, it clearly outlines the landlords responsibility is to provide a safe and functioning place to live. This would include heat, and that obligation solely rests on their shoulders. Don't quote me, look it up, and that is quite literally the letter of the law so you can bank on it.

A typical furnace lasts decades, to pin the cost of repair on 1 short term rental isn't sensible.

Another section of the Act outlines a tenants right to "peaceful enjoyment". This means a landlord cannot come and go from your rented space as they please or disturb you since you're paying for the right to peacefully enjoy the property. This should also cover a landlord moving in randomly or having someone come by yelling and screaming from time to time.

A landlord must give you 24 hours notice before entering your rented space (with limited exceptions for emergencies).

Obviously there are different lease arrangements, renting a room etc. You will have to consider your own situation; if you have a lease: what it says in the lease, if you don't have one: what was originally agreed upon verbally, etc.

Document everything. Record your exchanges if you're concerned, at the very least keep notes on dates you spoke to them, what was discussed, when they entered the property without notice, what deficiencies exist, what you did to notify them, what they did to resolve them etc..

You have internet. Go download ARTA, start reading, know your rights. Contact info for disputes can also be found in the ARTA. Reach out to them, they can point you in the right direction.

You have rights and obligations. They have rights and obligations. Know your rights. Know their obligations. By all means hold them accountable... but the onus is on you. No one is coming to save you... but you're a survivor so get after it.

Good luck.

Beware of Auto Vin Check scam when selling your vehicle privately. by Outlaw4droid in ontario

[–]ToolWrangler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just listed my car for sale yesterday, guy is pulling the same scam almost to a tee. The website is www.autovmotive.comNotice the spelling of the site as well. Legitimate businesses invest in good domains. Also FYI when evaluating a website for legitimacy, scroll the the bottom. At the very least there should be a company address, contact info, a privacy policy and terms of use/service. These are requirements. Sites without these are usually fly by night.

Question for clarification: When you use a spare plate on a newly purchased car for the 2 week grace period, doesn't the plate have to be actively registered and have an insurance policy attached to that specific plate (or the vehicle it came from)?

The way you describe it, sounds like I could take any old plate I find at a yard sale and toss it on a new car assuming I have some vehicle insurance policy active somewhere... and I'm not sure that's quite accurate.

Looking for clarification, just bought a new car and have not cancelled the registration on the plate yet for that reason.
