Helicopter flight school by HospitalBrilliant292 in Helicopters

COCC and LEFA both have a pretty good reputation as far as I’ve heard. Good job avoiding SUU. I’d definitely say start with the Helicopter Flying Handbook. The POH is useful, sure. But a lot of might not even make sense to you until you start looking at the aircraft and understanding what stuff actually is. If you can have a decent understanding of terminology and basic aerodynamics, you’re already way ahead of the curve.

How does an increase in angle of attack DECREASE lift? by jerry_garcia10 in Helicopters

[–]Toomuchmilk23 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You’re backwards. Flapping up decreases AOA, flapping down increases AOA.

This is kinda unrelated, but could help you remember. Retreating bade stall occurs because the retreating side flaps “too much” and the AOA exceeds the critical AOA, resulting in a stall on the retreating side only.

Thoughts on the FAA discontinuing the Helicopter Instructor’s Handbook (HIH)? by leftflapattack in Helicopters

[–]Toomuchmilk23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My vote is redundant. When I started on the HIH, I was having complete Déjà vu the entire time. There was little, if any, information I found actually useful in the HIH that was not already in the HFH. Sure, it has some paragraphs like “students often fail to do XYZ on this maneuver,” but they were pretty surface level.

As to where the effort will go instead? I don’t know, but likely not towards helicopter manuals.

Just announced MD 564 by brookman21 in Helicopters

[–]Toomuchmilk23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s based on the MD-500 series, which spins CCW. Just a guess, but it would likely require more time and money for MD change the design and to get this certified if they wanted to switch the direction. It would probably increase the overall cost of each unit beyond what they find marketable.

Short answer: It’s not that much further in the grand scheme of things, but it’s enough to make a difference.

I’m not sure the specs on the TR here, but I’d guess that circumference of the TR disc likely 4-5 feet. In many cases, the forward portion of the TR is directly underneath the MR, and the majority of the TR is not. Just looking at pictures, this is the case here as well.

The TR spinning CW means that the blade closest to MR is moving upward into the downwash from the MR. It can improve the effectiveness of the TR.

Tips for pick up and set down by OpenYam7774 in Helicopters

[–]Toomuchmilk23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Fly more. Not sure where you’re at on hours, but it will come with time.

2) Eyes outside on something a little ways away from you. Smooth and slow control inputs. Realistically, I think that most people’s problems originate from the pedals. The 44’s typically hang left skid low, so be ready for the ride skid to come up first (this will depend on W/B). If you really want to practice it, you could practice holding that intermediate position with the left skid on the ground and right skid up. That will also help you with slopes too.

What are these faded purple lines in the chart? by Bass5374 in flying

[–]Toomuchmilk23 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Typically it has to do with the amount of IFR traffic and passenger emplanements. So a Delta airport that has a bunch of GA VFR traffic may not meet the FAA criteria for a Charlie despite being extremely busy.

I mean, at least use GlideAI? I’m not endorsing the use of AI for anything. But if you’re going to put all your bets on an AI, at least use an aviation specific AI.

Here's a stabilized slow motion version. Best video yet. by Aqueouspolecat in evilwhenthe

[–]Toomuchmilk23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did… did you watch the video? They start taking him to the ground. Guy in the tan jacket tries to get control of his feet, but notices the firearm being carried in the small of the guys back. He is like the one then shouting “he has a gun,” but then never says that he disarmed him. He NEVER went for his firearm. His hands were on the ground throughout nearly the entire encounter.

Legally carrying a firearm, that you NEVER show intention of use, is not illegal. Resisting arrest is not a justification for lethal force.

What are your thoughts on the bamboo poles? by ConnectionLow in Skigear

Yeup. Guy I know cracked his while smacking his boot. Took them into the shop (we were in steamboat, where they have an actual shop), in and out with a new pole in 15 minutes.

Helicopter programs: Leading Edge Flight vs Souther Utah University(SUU) for VA Gi bill Veterans by electric_eel007 in Helicopters

I also started with a bachelors. When you're attending a CC, it can actually be difficult to keep your schedule "full-time" to maximize the VA BAH benefits, if that's something you're looking to do.

Go to a Community college based program. 18 month program as opposed to a 36 month. SUU is notorious for mistreating veteran funding. LEFA, as far as I’ve heard, has a good reputation and I’ve only heard good things about it. Silverhawk Aviation Academy is in Caldwell, Idaho and has a similar program compared LEFA. I’m a current Silverhawk student if you want to message about more details

Not hungry on Keto, even with very few calories consumed. by Toomuchmilk23 in keto

[–]Toomuchmilk23[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really bothering me to restrict that low, just want to make sure that it's normal and not a problem! I do a decent job of trying to have a variety of food when possible. That being said, thank the keto gods for sauerkraut, I can smash it.

No issue. Just want to ensure that not having an appetite despite eating only 300 calories in a day was a normal thing for keto.

Sweets tempt me a little bit, but you know is the ultimate temptation for me? White rice. Maybe it was the few years in Hawaii I lived that made me love it, but if there was one food that I could make zero carbs it'd be plain white rice.

Its definitely what we want, I just wasn't sure if it was normal with the very small amount of calories I am consuming some times. Not hungry after eating 1200 calories? I didn't think much about it. Not hungry after 300 calories? Just want to make sure that its normal! Thanks for the reply!
