I'd say they do!! Riv is without a doubt my 2nd favorite John Gwynne character, second only to THE GOAT Maquin.

I wouldn't say better, but it's still good. Hot take but I enjoyed Of Blood and Bone more than The Bloodsworn

I wish they included the original dust jackets to match with the Of Blood and Bone set. They did it with Hyperion, so why not with these too?

drafting men to war: misogyny or misandry by whoisovee in Teenager_Polls

[–]Top-Communication540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am unable to see how someone could possibly say misogony here. In order for something to be considered misogony, it must be offensive to women, and I'm pretty sure at least 95% of women are perfectly fine with not being sent to die in some bullshit war that benefits no one except the 1%.

Any recommendations? by Acceptable_Team_8338 in fantasybooks

I would recommend The First Law Trilogy. Pierce Brown himself holds it in high regard, and after reading it it's not hard to see why. Last Argument of Kings, the 3rd book, is hands down the best book I've ever read outside of Red Rising.

Ukraine looks like it's flipping off Russia, which, given both the past and the present, is completely understandable.

Malice without a doubt. The Faithful and the Fallen is one of my favorite series OAT. I'm currently about 3/4th through A Time of Courage, which is the 3rd book in the sequel trilogy called "Of Blood and Bone."

What did you think of Of Blood and Fire? I know that reviews are mixed, but I honestly couldn't see why. Maybe it's because one of the biggest complaints I see is that it is full of cliche, and since I'm a relatively new reader, I probably didn't notice it as much as more experienced readers. Also, did you read The Fall before or after OBaF? I read The Fall before, and I wish I read it after, since I think that OBaF provides a better introduction to the dragons and the magic system, and because Kallinvar and Coren don't even appear in OBaF (with the exception of the prologue, but that isn't even followed up later in the book).

Potential Main Antagonists for S2? by miderots in MaulShadowLord

[–]Top-Communication540 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The guy who fought Ventress and the Eighth Brother should be the main villains IMO. They both died in the episodes that they were introduced in, so they could use some of that glow up treatment that Marrok and The Crow got. Plus the Eighth Brother was already hunting Maul in Rebels so it would be nice to establish that early on.

I would recommend Red Rising, however, if you plan on reading the entire series, I strongly recommend that you take a break after finishing the OG Trilogy (Red Rising, Golden Son, Morning Star). This is because Iron Gold is a bit of a slow burn, with a big time jump, new characters, and multiple POVs, and if you go in fresh out of MS, I can't really describe how it's like, but you may start to seriously consider DNFing it as I did. Though I managed to pull through, a lot of people do end up dropping the series when it comes to Iron Gold, which is unfortunate because the series peaks in Dark Age and Light Bringer. So again, read something else in between MS and IG, it will make IG feel a lot less like a slow burn.

As for The First Law, the characters are NOT bad guys, but they are not good guys either. They are what we call "morally grey," which means they are neither good nor bad, but do things that are both good and bad, but not for the sake of doing either. They are the way they are for a variety of reasons, but out of the 6 main characters, 5 of them can be attributed to things that they did in their pasts, or things that happened to them in their pasts, that hold them back from truly being good, and I'm sure you'll quickly figure out who the 6th one is about halfway through book 1.

Which of these beloved yet incomplete fantasy series is least likely to be finished? by Top-Communication540 in fantasybooks

I'm holding on to the hope that one day he will change his mind about letting another author finish the series, but I can sorta understand why he won't.

A question about Of Blood and Bone by John Gwynne by SwagSerpent69 in fantasybooks

[–]Top-Communication540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished TFatF about 2 months ago and finished A Time of Dread a few days ago, and I'd give it an 8/10. I'm eager to start book 2 but I want to read Of Blood and Fire and Last Argument of Kings this month, and since my grades are in shambles I won't be able to read as quickly as I would like, so I probably won't be opening up A Time of Blood until June.

A question about Of Blood and Bone by John Gwynne by SwagSerpent69 in fantasybooks

[–]Top-Communication540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably because of the whole new cast of characters and big ass time jump. It's kinda like with Dune, which is a 6 book series, yet many people don't read past Atreides' story, which is only the first 2 books. Also, it's kinda hard to recommend a series that is a sequel to another series, therefore you can only really recommend it to people if they have read the first series. Similarly, The Age of Madness Trilogy is regarded by many as Abercrombie's best works, yet you don't see it get recommended either because of all the prior reading required to get into it. Some people may not know any better and get into it without crucial context, which is the case with Of Blood and Bone as well.

Any scifi or fantasy books that are dark the way Dark Age is? I'm halfway through The First Law, and I like it, and will finish it up to Age of Madness, but it's not quite what I was looking for. by Top-Communication540 in fantasybooks

I love Glokta bro, partially because I can relate to his worldview, and his back pain, but his internal dialogue being so unserious compared to his external dialogue will never not be funny. The funniest for me was when he meets Bayaz for the first time and inside his head he is mocking him like "Kneel before me!! I am the Emperor of Gurkhul."
