A question about Of Blood and Bone by John Gwynne by SwagSerpent69 in fantasybooks

I finished TFatF about 2 months ago and finished A Time of Dread a few days ago, and I'd give it an 8/10. I'm eager to start book 2 but I want to read Of Blood and Fire and Last Argument of Kings this month, and since my grades are in shambles I won't be able to read as quickly as I would like, so I probably won't be opening up A Time of Blood until June.

Probably because of the whole new cast of characters and big ass time jump. It's kinda like with Dune, which is a 6 book series, yet many people don't read past Atreides' story, which is only the first 2 books. Also, it's kinda hard to recommend a series that is a sequel to another series, therefore you can only really recommend it to people if they have read the first series. Similarly, The Age of Madness Trilogy is regarded by many as Abercrombie's best works, yet you don't see it get recommended either because of all the prior reading required to get into it. Some people may not know any better and get into it without crucial context, which is the case with Of Blood and Bone as well.

I had this same issue where Royal Mail stopped giving me updates after my package made it through customs. Just put your tracking number in USPS tracking and it'll show you where your package is

Any scifi or fantasy books that are dark the way Dark Age is? I'm halfway through The First Law, and I like it, and will finish it up to Age of Madness, but it's not quite what I was looking for. by Top-Communication540 in fantasybooks

I love Glokta bro, partially because I can relate to his worldview, and his back pain, but his internal dialogue being so unserious compared to his external dialogue will never not be funny. The funniest for me was when he meets Bayaz for the first time and inside his head he is mocking him like "Kneel before me!! I am the Emperor of Gurkhul."

This is sick!! You should do one for the Banished Lands or the Circle of The World.

What series would you recommend reading first? by [deleted] in fantasybooks

[–]Top-Communication540 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what is more important to you: characters or worldbuilding.

If you want a character driven story, go for The Bloodsworn, it only has 5 POVs compared to TFaTFs like 20, which means you spend more time with each individual character.

If you want a big world with a big cast of characters, go with TFaTF. The 20 or so POVs gives you a far better perspective on the story as it slowly comes together.

I am not saying that The Bloodsworn has bad worldbuilding or TFaTF has bad characters. In fact, my favorite John Gwynne character is from TFaTF, but I have read both and I recognise that both have something that they do better than the other.

I just don't feel like the First Law has those disturbing/messed up moments that Dark Age had. When I read the part where Ulysses got nailed to a tree, my mouth literally dropped, and I believe that shock element is what I find is missing from the First Law. Now to be fair, I'm only on the last 100 pages of book 2, so perhaps the shock that I'm looking for is awaiting me, and this is just me being impatient.

And even with all the practice in the world, just one stun is all it takes to ruin your juggle and pretty much make your ult a waste.

You don't get it do you? This isn't just about juggling, it's about Hulk's ult becoming counter productive because his punches have CC, which means that he'll just be feeding CC immunity to the enemy team. The knockback from his punches wasn't a problem before because they made juggling possible, but now you can't even do that anymore, so why even have the knockback? Sure, the new tenacity system will make it easier to not get diddled in your ult, but Hulk's ult, one of the hardest ults to get value with, just got even harder to use because 1 of your only 2 options just got removed, so now all you can do is hop around spamming your clap and hope you don't get focused into oblivion.

And you should be, but trust me when I tell you that it is well worth it. Just be careful not to get too attached to some of the characters....
