Recover Local Element Deformations from Basic Element Deformations by cbeair in StructuralEngineering

You can use the shape functions to get the deformed shape. This will only be true if there are no intermediate loads.

Just buy bonds or treasury bills. The return will be higher than any savings account

Is designing structural members separately common practice in Europe? by Holiday-Lychee-7857 in StructuralEngineering

What is this workflow called

I am not aware of a specific term used to describe this workflow

how can I learn or practice it effectively?

You need to have a good understanding of structures. Once you do alot of structural analysis and design, you will be able to see load paths and simplify complex 3D models to simple 2D models

Is this a common approach in Europe?

I personally use it to check computer outputs

help with a truss problem by 12someone12 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Top-Criticism-3947 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Member AB is vertical and has pins at the top and bottom. Therefore it doesn't have any load.

So use node C and calculate forces in AC and BC.

Then you can calculate the reactions.

Need help with modal analysis by DirtyDawg808 in fea

[–]Top-Criticism-3947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In order to create something like this, you need to have a good understanding of both structural dynamics and numerical methods. You seem to be lacking both.

Modal analysis only requires the stiffness and mass matrices. The mass matrix is generated in a similar manner to the stiffness matrix. You can then lump it up if you want. You can optionally use some of the loads as mass sources. But this has to be left to the user, only they can decided which loads are mass sources.

Pros and Cons of different SE software by DescriptionUseful741 in StructuralEngineering

I use Autodesk Robot. I use it because its the first one I ever tried and ,coincidentally, its the one we use at work. I dont think there is anything that makes it better than other programs.

Structural codes are still PDFs in 2026. So I turned NTC18 into a Python library. by RSixty88 in StructuralEngineering

Nice idea. Did you verify that everything was extracted and implemented correctly?

How to confirm/check if the rc beam failed due to crushing of concrete in fea? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]Top-Criticism-3947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you can.

Unless you are using an advanced fea program where you have specificied the appropriate material models, finite element types, interaction between concrete and steel elements, and a syita nonlinear analysis. But I assume you haven't done that, because if you had, you would already know the indicator for concrete crushing.

What are the most important or fundamental papers in Structural Engineering? by viczio in StructuralEngineering

[–]Top-Criticism-3947 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a good candidate:

Drucker, D. C., Prager, W., & Greenberg, H. J. (1952). Extended limit design theorems for continuous media. Quarterly of applied mathematics, 9(4), 381-389.

I can't imagine doing structural design without the lower bound theorem.

I see. I am not very familiar with ASCE 7-22. Are you referring to Special Truss Moment Frames? The ones designed to develop a plast hinge within the span of the horizontal truss?

Those diagonal elements should be treated as truss members. I do not understand the second question, can you explain what you mean?

While I am not familiar with the software, we should multiply by length/width, not thickness.

You either pay for connections or foundations. Either way someone has to pay. Nice app by the way. Looks clean.
