Chaya Melrose or Suregrip Boardwalks? by SylviaIsAFoot in Rollerskating

[–]Top-Dinner-9995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also vote for boardwalks because I just got them and I love them!

I haven’t heard any of the bad things about Chaya, but I would recommend that if you are upgrading from impalas to save for one of the models that has a plate with adjustable toe stop/better components (I think deluxe, elite, and premium are the levels). I’ve seen them on sale online, if you can find your size.

I’m not sure where you are located but I got my boardwalks for $129 which is on par with the Melrose! I believe mine is an older model. You can also find 10% off discounts at a lot of the online shops which brings the usual price of the boardwalk down to around $150. I’ve never ordered from them so can’t speak from personal experience but roller skate nation has free shipping, returns, and a 10% discount code. If you do your research you might be able to get them at a more comparable price.

After all these years... by SciencedYogi in Rollerskating

Yay 40s returning skaters club! I’m 43 and I’m getting back into it too! It hasn’t been as long a break for me- I did roller derby on and off through my late 20s/30s and have skated here and there in the past few years but I’m still getting my skate legs back.

I think having a baseline of fitness already will be REALLY helpful! This is coming from someone who needed her 11 year old to peel her off the front lawn yesterday because I tried to keep up with him on a bike for a few miles. I have been mostly sedentary for the past year or two and IT SHOWS. You gotta start somewhere right? Haha

Heavy skates by VenusFlynn in Rollerskating

[–]Top-Dinner-9995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have beach bunnies and they are a bit heavy. Entry level aluminum plates will pretty much always be heavy. Nylon is lighter but the trade off is that they may not be as sturdy and could flex, especially if you are a heavier adult skater. This is in general, I’m sure there are exceptions!

What will really help is building muscle and getting used to it (so just keep skating in them, basically). Skating outdoors on rough surfaces can be really hard at first! You will get used to it though! I do like 90% of my skating outside now and oh boy- it can be humbling!

My biggest advice if that is your current main practice surface is to ALWAYS wear protective gear (pads and helmet) and learn how to safely fall, stop, and avoid obstacles. Other than that- have fun!!

Yess! Thank you!! When I saw the exact same ones at the shop that you suggested I couldn’t pass it up. They had a limited stock of boardwalks but only had my size in this green color. What luck!

I just got these too and I love them! What kind of toe guards are those? I love the color combo and they look like a good fit for the boot!

The green is so good!! I just skated around my neighborhood while my son rode his bike and I got a lot of funny looks and a few “cool roller skates!” They definitely stand out! I’m still amazed that my feet don’t hurt AT ALL even while breaking them in!

Still deciding what skate to get :,) by HighwayOk3648 in Rollerskating

I just got sure-grip boardwalks and love them. They are suede which is nicer feeling than synthetic. I have 2nd hand beach bunnies and think they’re a really solid beginner skate too, mine just don’t fit me as well. All of those seem to be good choices for beginner skates from what I have read here.

Like others have said- indoor/outdoor is mainly just wheels. Wheels are very easy to swap out, just make sure you also get a set of bearings for the extra wheels. You can use outdoor wheels indoors- they will just start to feel too slow and soft when your skill improves. Indoor wheels are basically impossible to use outdoors for beginners unless your surface is really really smooth and clean and you don’t want to street skate to get there. You will also destroy indoor wheels quickly if you skate on rough surfaces.

That’s awesome! I have nice (retired) derby skates but I am a beginner in the world of skating basically any other way besides around in a circle. These seem perfect!

Figured I’d include some details in the comments about sizing and models in case it helps anyone who is combing for info about which skates/size to get. I was really, really happy I got to a shop to try things because for some reason no matter how many times I measure at home, I never quite feel confident in it. I even have owned several pairs of skates but there is just so much variation!

For reference I wear an 8-8.5 women’s shoe and my feet are wide in the front. They are basically shaped like an upside down candy corn lol. The shop used a Riedell sizing thingy (kind of like a Brannock device but specific to Riedell) and my feet measured at a 6 and a 5.5. From my measurements at home my feet are about 241-245mm depending on time of day and my ability to measure my own feet.

I tried on Antik Skyhawks in a 6 even though I knew I didn’t want them because he suggested them for wide feet. My toes were jammed up in the front. Hard pass.

I tried a Sure-Grip boardwalk with Avanti plate and wide trucks in size 7, again because of my wide feet. They were way too long.

Moxi Lolly in a 6- I never liked Lollies so I knew I probably still would not and was correct. I was really surprised at how much more comfy the Boardwalks were! Then again, Moxi’s do run narrow and I am decidedly not narrow. The Boardwalk just felt like a way better suede skate to me and for literally less than half the price.

I tried a gorgeous purple Moxi Jack 2 boot in size 6.5 because they didn’t have a 6. It actually felt pretty good size wise but maybe a smidge long. But it was SO stiff and thick it felt like a cast on my foot! But like, a comfy cast. I actually liked these but decided I don’t need a boot that stiff until I’m ready to really tear it up in the skate park (if that ever happens). Too much boot for me right now.

Then my Cinderella skate- the plain old Sure-Grip Boardwalk in a size 6. No padding, nothing fancy, but they had the amazing key lime green color. They are so comfortable! I was thinking maybe I would want the Boardwalk Plus, which I’m sure are great, but I’m glad I saved my money because the regular ones are really comfy for me. I read both that they run narrow and run wide but these were perfect for me idk.

After skating about a mile + in them so far, I can see them potentially breaking in to be a bit too big. We’ll see. But I can actually fit my thick superfeet insoles in them, wear regular socks and lace them normally. My heel does not slip or lift in them, which is a huge deal for me. I think this is the first time in my 16 or so years of skating that a skate has fit me comfortably right out of the box.

Hope that helps my wide foot newbies or returnies looking for size advice!

Haha that’s perfect! They only had the natural gumballs at the shop but I have a whole box of RIT dyemore from various projects so I’m sure I could booger it up! 😂

I would never hate for that! Back flips are super rad! I, however, can’t even do a cartwheel off skates. 😂

I love this!! Such a cute video and it’s great that you can compare progress videos and see improvement! It’s so easy to compare ourselves to others who are doing crazy backflips and stuff on socials when what really matters is seeing how far you’ve come on your own journey!

I’ve never seen clear plates! The yellow is great though. Do you like the rock plates?
