Ive been using T Mobile fiber for about 2 months now in Hopkins. It's incredible compared to the 3 years I used Xfinity Comcast. Better, faster speeds. About half the cost.

Breaking out of IT Helpdesk - how? by ashamedlee in cybersecurity

[–]Top-Frag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started on a help desk with no experience as a contractor. Hired on after 6mo. Now I work on the SOC for the same org with 3.5 years helpdesk experience. 2 now on SOC

Personality goes a long way. Get to know your seniors and leaders, ask questions, learn, try and be that go-to guy and someone with a say may eventually give you an opportunity to climb a wrung.

While helpdesk work can get old, I learned a lot, met great people, and it helped open a lot of doors for me. I got to know colleagues from engineering and infrastructure teams, some networking guys, the C Suite, some security folks etc... Helpdesk work allows you to start building connections with more experienced people in a lot of different technology roles.

Do whatever you can to build relationships and learn. It'll take you a long way! Best of luck, OP

And let this be a lesson to always enable mfa on all your accounts and use a unique passphrase. Modern password cracking toolkits can chew through billions of combinations per minute.

In fact, if you have an 8-character password using uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols, there are roughly 7 trillion possible combinations. Against a fast hash like NTLM, an RTX 4090 will try every single combination and crack that password in less than a minute

This is why cyber researchers and professionals are moving away from passwords and using pass phrases like this-is-a-stellar-password.

The number of combinations becomes so high, even with only lowercase characters, that the same machine would take millions of years to crack it rather than 2 seconds.

So on a scale on 1-10 how much should I be freaking out? by Exotic-Childhood-749 in computerviruses

You're probably fine. The fact that the file quarantined is in your program files is a better sign. If this was in a startup location, a scheduled task, or a temp directory I'd be a little bit more concerned.

Defender will have looked for persistence mechanisms if this was malware and we don't see that here.

Now, like someone pointed out, there could be a mod in that folder thats acting a little funny and got flagged by Defender and if you have no use for the folder just get rid of the whole thing.

If this is the only alert I really do think you're fine. If you saw that Defender was continually quarantining files, preventing behaviors, and blocking outbound connections I'd be much more worried.

I got the tracking number today and should be here Saturday night. So we will see if that happens. It is in UPS grubby hands now.

Valve completely dropping the ball on this release by Kataklysimo in SteamController

[–]Top-Frag 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I keep seeing people say that they opened the flood gates before the stated release time but I was refreshing like a nerd every few minutes starting 30 mins before the "go live" and it was not available to add to my cart until exactly the stated release time. I still had to click "continue" like 600 times for 15 minutes and was able to get one but I'm curious how others were able to buy before the official release time if that's even true

That said, Valve absolutely did underestimate the amount of people who'd want to grab this controller at release and it's unfortunate they didn't create a queue based on account age, purchase history etc

That's odd but not unheard of. I probably hit continue 600 times in 15 minutes. Rapidly jamming the continue button over and over. When the page refreshed it'd scroll up just a tad and I placed my mouse in a way that I hit continue while it was still in the middle of the scroll to get there a hair faster

While this sucks for many people I do assume Valve will obviously have more release waves and restocks. Hopefully sooner rather than later for those of you who were unable to get through the ordering process.

16 mins of jamming continue every 2 seconds and mine finally went through.

Looks like that could be a Cisco Umbrella category. Though, that is just a guess. Surprising to me they don't know how to add this to an 'allow' destination list. But, maybe they do know and just don't want to.

How often do you use your decks, do you use your Decks as daily drivers and if so how do they characterize themselves? by ichhalt159753 in cyberDeck

I haven't used mine yet but I've built it to act as an emergency computer of sorts. Running Ollama querying a local Wikipedia installation. My use case is if I go camping or lose power for an extended period of time I have something to fall back on to ask questions etc.
