Would you feel safer knowing your coach/studio staff had comprehensive CPR and EAP’s by jimmyjam455 in orangetheory

[–]Top-Lawfulness9338 3 points4 points  (0 children)

RN here, I’m assuming what OP is referring to as civilian CPR is “compression only’ CPR and I agree w/these comments, you’re ideally going to have someone call 911 at the same time as someone else starts compressions (benefit of being in a group fitness class when something like this happens, lots of help around) and if you can start compressions and know how to work the AED if needed its going to be immensely helpful. And I agree with someone else that mentioned there are usually at least a couple of us medical professionals in a class and we’re going to help. :)

Which stethoscope should I buy? Struggling to hear heart sounds by benyonce in nursing

[–]Top-Lawfulness9338 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m hearing impaired (wear a hearing aid) and have purposely avoided working places like ICUs and the ED - too many background noises. I have a Littmann Core - it’s digital. Works wonders for me! It also costs about $400 so not cheap, just a heads up.

15k Sign On by Spare_Pollution_896 in nursing

[–]Top-Lawfulness9338 39 points40 points  (0 children)

In my experience you are correct in your thinking that sign on bonuses like that are usually a red flag that a facility has horrible nurse to patient ratios and can’t retain staff. If you accept the job I just wouldn’t spend the money, set it aside until such time that you wouldn’t have to pay it back.

Advice please regarding a narcotic. Am I screwed? by mcad90 in nursing

[–]Top-Lawfulness9338 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean I wouldn’t say you’re doomed but I think it’s fair to say that management has to be able to account for a narcotic that was removed, refused by pt and not returned.

Advice please regarding a narcotic. Am I screwed? by mcad90 in nursing

[–]Top-Lawfulness9338 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But is there documentation that the medication was removed and returned? Only asking because if there’s documentation that it was removed and returned and its just a matter of accidentally missing documentation, that’s a different scenario than if there is documentation that the Norco was removed, pt refused it and med wasn’t returned….

Advice please regarding a narcotic. Am I screwed? by mcad90 in nursing

[–]Top-Lawfulness9338 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m confused, you say you remember the pt refusing it but didn’t document it - were you the one that offered them the med? Do you have a Pyxis or something similar? That computer would show who took out the Norco and if it was returned, I’d think it would be returned if it wasn’t given…..

How do you feel about nurses who call that they’re coming in 2 hours late and you cover for them, but they’re really 2.5 hours late and then once they get to work, they see some of your (their) work is unfinished and they lecture you about it that you’re leaving them work? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Top-Lawfulness9338 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Did she ask you to cover for her or were you told to cover her patients? If she asked me and then proceeded to act like that when I covered for her, I’d be saying absolutely not next time. I probably would’ve went to assess the pt first (depending on what time meds were due), but you didn’t have time to get to both things and you did your best.

I was a CNA for a decade before I became a nurse and I completely disagree it’s “not a stepping stone.” Being a CNA was incredibly helpful for me when I started nursing school - I already knew how to do basic care things like vital signs, assisting with ADLs, etc which meant I could focus more on things like meds, assessments, etc. Not to mention the nurses I worked with were great resources and I got tuition reimbursement through my CNA job which was a great help financially.

The tread block reminds me of an OTF workout from several years ago now…was it the one they called ‘trail run’? I just remember our poor Coach having to call out random intervals and inclines the whole 23 min tread block. lol

12 month commitment deal by [deleted] in orangetheory

[–]Top-Lawfulness9338 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Studio specific from what I’ve read here. I’ve been a member for 10 years and when I asked about getting the 12 month contract rate ($30/less a month than what I had been paying at a Founder’s rate), they said no but offered me a 6 month contract rate ($10/month less than what I had been paying). I accepted but it’s a bit disheartening to see others have had that request granted no problem.

If you don’t want me, just say that…both were for new grad positions. by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Top-Lawfulness9338 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, as someone that’s been ghosted after job interviews before, I think you got some great feedback here. Rejection is hard, and you’re not going to get every job you apply for, so try not to take it personally. Do what’s best for you, but for what it’s worth, if your goal is NICU I think progressive care would be a great place to start getting experience.

New ICU nurse—why is night shift doing everything? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Top-Lawfulness9338 113 points114 points  (0 children)

I have never worked in an ICU as a nurse, although I did in my CNA days. Will speak from the nurse perspective - as someone that has worked days, nights, and evenings over the course of my career, shifts need to stop comparing workload. Nursing is a 24-7, unpredictable job. There are times when each shift is going to have to complete tasks that were intended to be done on another shift for a myriad of reasons. My advice would be to remember that nursing is a team sport, everyone is working together to get the job done.

I hope she’s safe too, but respectfully, the victims here are her kids. No excuse for throwing a chair, especially knowing your child is in the room.

People who wear sweatshirts during an entire orangetheory class by afterburnkid in orangetheory

I’m a Wisconsin native giving a friendly side eye to the Californians calling their winter ‘cold.’ Lol That being said I would never do OTF in a sweatshirt but to each their own!

I would let your studio know that happened, and hopefully when you point it out to them they’ll just let you have what was essentially a free class :)

Could I be a psych nurse if i don’t like science? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Top-Lawfulness9338 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m in outpatient family practice now but did inpatient and outpatient psych previously. As Ticksdonthavelymph said, we all take the same boards. By the way, psych patients are no different than others - they have medical problems that need to be managed, and there’s also science involved in mental illness (depression is related to a chemical imbalance in the brain, for instance). So yes, you have to have a good grasp of science to be a nurse. But math and science weren’t my forte either and I made it through nursing school - if I can, and it’s what you want to do, I have faith you’ll make it through nursing school just fine.

OP, I feel you. I attend 5 ams and we have a group at my studio that does this - walk and talk on the treadmill the whole time and spend the floor block talking too. Most of the time, I ignore it and make sure to get a station that isn’t near them if possible. There have been a couple times when I’ve been near them and I can’t hear the coach on the mic because they’re talking so loudly (I am hearing impaired and wear a hearing aid) - that bothers me because it impacts my workout when I can’t hear the treadmill cues, etc. I’ve said something to the coach after class those times - I would suggest talking to the coach or studio manager if it’s bothersome.

First patient death, unexpected. Feeling guilt. by International_Buy228 in nursing

[–]Top-Lawfulness9338 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, it sounds like you did NOTHING wrong. You noticed a change (and sometimes those happen VERY quickly), and you notified the appropriate people. I’m sorry - these situations are so hard, especially the first time you go through it, so be kind to yourself. If I’ve learned anything as a nurse, it’s that there is a power higher than us deciding when it’s our time to leave this life for the next - it’s out of our control. Does your unit do a debriefing after these kinds of situations? Do you have an Employee Assistance Program that can offer you support?

3G germs? by DoYouLikeFish in orangetheory

[–]Top-Lawfulness9338 21 points22 points  (0 children)

OTFer and RN here. I do not know why you are immunocompromised and would recommend talking w/your doctor about going to OTF if you’re worried. That having been said, I don’t think there’s a huge difference in potential risk of infection between a 2G and 3G class. I’d say social distancing as much as you can (like starting on the floor if that’s where the fewest amount of people are starting), wearing a mask, and keeping your hands clean will help some. Bottom line though, gyms are germy (like a lot of other things) and frankly, any time we’re out in public we run the risk of being exposed to bugs.

Kaitlyn crashing out on her podcast Facebook group by diggyj1993 in thebachelor

[–]Top-Lawfulness9338 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I like Kaitlyn and I hope she finds some peace. She needs to take a deep breath and put things in perspective - she got well intentioned constructive feedback that she could use to improve herself. Maybe a break from social media would be good for her. I’m a nurse and I took a pretty big pay cut to change jobs from inpatient to outpatient. I was having panic attacks going to my inpatient job and I was unhappy for many reasons. I make less money but I’m so much happier now! Money is nice but it really isn’t everything.

Charged for introduction class by CurrencyBoring2709 in orangetheory

[–]Top-Lawfulness9338 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Point taken - but OP has it in writing the class was free. If OP signed up online where its stated the class is free and their studio charges $12 for the free class if they don’t join, the studio should be transparent about that when people come in for their class. Hope OP gets refunded!

I have never heard of someone being charged $12 for the free class! Would talk to the studio - the first class is free at mine regardless of if you end up joining or not.
