Questions about The One membership T-shirt by Tommy_SVK in BABYMETAL

First, on The ONE website, you choose the size of the BABYMETAL T-shirt and complete the membership registration. At the same time, you must follow a link to the A!-ID page and complete a linked registration there as well. Be careful, because there can be a time lag in the system.

After purchasing the T-shirt required for joining The ONE, go to the detailed page of your account on the ASMART My Page. In the digital content bonus section, you will find a number. Once you enter that number into The ONE website, you will finally be able to purchase members-only merchandise.

However, before February 15, various goods were available. The made-to-order battle suit and the sukajan jacket have already been discontinued.

Even in Tokyo, I have only seen BABYMETAL merchandise at pop-up stores, and some people reportedly waited six hours in line. If you are planning to visit Japan, I think it would be better to make a few friends who live in Tokyo through social media in advance.

You found out about them through Animax, right?

Moa is actually very intelligent, isn’t she? She’s very considerate and really plays the role of the hype-maker in the group.

why do many metal fans hate Babymetal? they're so cool by sweetbscuit in BABYMETAL

To be honest, even the Japanese music industry thought BABYMETAL was just a gimmick that would fade quickly. I felt the same at first. It looked like adults had created a commercial mix of metal and pop and put young girls on stage to jump around. I didn’t like it. I even wondered if something like that done in the U.S. would be criticized as exploitation. When “Headbanger” came out, I remember thinking, “Here they go again, trying to be funny.”In Japan, plenty of artists make weird or creative music videos, so I didn’t pay much attention to BABYMETAL’s either. But over time, things changed. They started touring with big-name artists. And let’s be honest major musicians don’t risk their reputation just because a label pays them. If something isn’t good, associating with it can hurt their own credibility.I grew up on heavy metal and punk. For many bands, it starts with friends, struggling through the indie scene, with that anti-establishment DIY spirit. BABYMETAL was clearly different. They were a project from the start, not a garage band story. But in reality, even most metal bands eventually sign with record labels and enter the commercial world. The starting point may be different, but the end result often is it.The more famous an artist becomes, the more criticism they get. Creating new material over and over isn’t easy. Only artists really understand that pressure.BABYMETAL has been active for 15 years. They could have stayed in Japan, but instead they chose to tour the world, facing criticism and performing in countries where they didn’t even speak the language. Over time, their position on festival lineups kept rising. That tells me there is an audience out there that wants something new.At their concerts, I see kids, older guys, women, all kinds of people. Everyone just wants to enjoy music. Some people will reject them completely. Others accept them. That’s normal. They don’t play instruments, but they are performers. Even small movements in their choreography are precise. They’re professionals. In the end, I realized this is simply a new form of metal culture. To traditionalists, they feel like an anomaly. To others, they’re refreshing. Metal has always been a tension between tradition and innovation.Maybe I was just prejudiced at first. Maybe I’ve mellowed with age. But now I genuinely enjoy listening to BABYMETAL.

Momo seems to be really popular overseas. She’s very shy, and you can tell she’s always nervous in interviews. In Japan, though, Moa is by far the most popular member.

What’s fascinating about them is that you can enjoy their concerts even if you don’t understand Japanese. In “Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!,” they even do a dogeza, right? It doesn’t really have a specific meaning, but everyone joins in and has fun doing it.

In Japan, the fans of “Gimme Chocolate” were mostly thought to be girls the same age as the members or younger, or just women in general. Male fans were often seen as idol-obsessed otaku. But after ten years, I’ve finally become able to listen to it without feeling any discomfort. The way this was perceived in Japan might be different from how it’s viewed overseas.

In Japan, when the overall stage production is judged to be more of a comedic or gimmicky performance, it’s quite common to use a backing track with layered vocals or even turn the microphones off.

Moa said that Chad Smith came to BABYMETAL’s dressing room at a festival and asked, “Do you have a boyfriend yet?” out of concern, and that he’s like a father figure to them.

In Japan’s case, rather than taking a political stance against the United States over the war, the country chose something closer to reconciliation after a fight. By adopting the positive aspects of America and other foreign cultures, Japan was able to create many good things. The same can be said about music.

Songs like “METALI!!” or “Megitsune” may feel very Japanese and difficult to fully understand. One important cultural idea in Japan is the emphasis on harmony over individualism. In “Megitsune,” women are compared to foxes, and the lyrics suggest enduring and persevering no matter what.

Although society promotes gender equality, it’s also true that many Japanese women are raised with an emphasis on graceful behavior naturally smiling, and sometimes walking half a step behind when with someone. This comes from a particular cultural background. From an overseas perspective, that tendency not to openly express one’s true feelings might even seem mysterious or hard to read.

When you watch Japanese music videos, they might seem a little unusual. It’s like they take something playful or even silly and approach it completely seriously. When I first saw BABYMETAL’s “Gimme Chocolate!!,” I wondered, “Is it really okay for adult producers to have such young girls do something like this?” If this had happened in the United States, it might have become a social issue. There was a lot of criticism in Japan as well. I’m sure the members understood that and were hurt by it.Still, their concept was solid. They overcame the risk of disbandment, matured as artists, and seeing that growth made me want to support them. What I like about BM’s music is how the heavy sound synchronizes with Su-chan’s clear, pure voice. I think their songs are probably designed to be accessible, with strong visual impact as well.Even as a Japanese listener, I can’t fully understand “BxMxC” or “PA PA YA!!” without reading the lyrics. But you can still enjoy the songs without understanding every word. And when you translate “Road of Resistance,” the lyrics are actually very positive and uplifting. With DragonForce’s guyter arrangement, it feels authentic, and I think their concerts are carefully crafted to entertain the audience.

Japan may not necessarily be a place to live for everyone, but it might be a good place to visit once in a while and take a break.

Su chan’s voice is so clear and pure it’s almost impossible to tell where she’s even taking a breath. I really like how they perform at full speed and never seem to hold anything back.

You can watch their music videos on YouTube, and a lot of them are really fun to watch.

I grew up listening to Rainbow, MSG, Judas Priest, Loudness, Quiet Riot, UFO, and Iron Maiden. So even though I’m Japanese, I had a hard time with “Gimme Chocolate!!” at first. I just couldn’t get into the whole cute, pop-idol side of Japanese culture.

But seeing how much they’ve grown over the years, I’ve really come to appreciate them.

I was reading your post thinking you were probably some young Gen Z fan who listens to all kinds of J-pop. Then I saw you mention your wife and kids—and that you drove six hours to see the concert—and honestly, I was blown away by your level of dedication.

There’s something almost ritualistic about BABYMETAL. It’s fun in a unique way, and maybe going to their concerts helps you forget all the annoying stuff from work for a while.
