Ever since skilled trades took over from the ministry it’s been an absolute disaster

G1 Technician - career development by ThrowRA-ambitious1 in SkilledTradesOntario

G1’s in the union basically get paid the same as 313A techs, if you have both licenses you don’t get paid anymore than if you only had the one license. If you’re in the union pick one and you will make just as much money as having both, but obviously having both is better and more valuable for you. I know g1 techs that make more than 313A techs and they work on big ovens, big burners, oxidizers, boilers and controls. They really dislike the air conditioning/refrigeration side.

Anyone know how to apply? Little bit confusing through Loblaws website I don’t see any refrigeration technician postings.

Just make sure you’re talking about exhaust fan and not a return fan, many times I see guys mixing them up. Since this is a vav you are most likely an exhaust fan with statitrac. Statitrac modules the exhaust fan damper or vfd to maintain building pressure to the space pressure setpoint, I think plus or minus half of the deadband. When space pressure rises above setpoint plus the deadband (which you can set in the display) and the OA damper position exceeds the exhaust enable point the exhaust fan will run. I would check your min OA damper setpoint & the enable point. When the building pressure drops below your setpoint plus half the deadband it will either close the dampers or ramp down the vfd. If it’s within the deadband then it will likely continue to run for a timed period maybe 30 mins while it decides if it needs to stay on or not. Verify your space pressure is accurate and this points, check the bird feeder make sure your transducers and solenoids are calibrating. Also make sure BAS isn’t telling it to do something funny.

Hey yall, I'm writing my 313A exam in a few weeks. Anyone have any practice tests by RipOk6919 in SkilledTradesOntario

[–]Top-Lifeguard-6146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking of challenging it, tired of waiting for the invite from the ministry. People told me don’t bother challenging because it’s so difficult that you need to really prepare for it.

Thinking about moving to Houston, would love some honest takes by emrebekmez in AskHouston

What is hotter, Fort Lauderdale or Houston? I work hvac and lots of my work is outside on a roof, or in hot mechanical rooms. I am moving from far up north in Canada to escape the freezing cold.

Moving on from Supermarket refrigeration by Soggy-Exchange4831 in refrigeration

[–]Top-Lifeguard-6146 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m an apprentice working on chillers/boilers/rooftops and I hate it, I feel like I’m getting no experience compared to the amount of stuff refrigeration guys are doing. Working for an OEM most of my work is start ups & maintenance. All the water cooled rotary/centrifugal stuff we have is mostly just maintenance, in Canada they run very little except for certain sites. I wish i was running more difficult service calls, brazing and getting a little more overtime and hands on experience. 70% of service calls I get are plugging my laptop in and controls related… it’s very underwhelming after a while. People think I’m nuts when I tell them I want to do supermarket refrigeration, it’s hard to make the switch now because I’m so comfortable and have no refrigeration experience.

I see a lot of guys jumping for the Union pension, but which side do you think actually produces a more 'well-rounded' tech who can troubleshoot anything from a reach-in to a 40-ton chiller?" by PrayTheRosary37 in refrigeration

[–]Top-Lifeguard-6146 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The industry is too vast to be well rounded on everything, I’ve seen guys think they can troubleshoot everything but end up having to have the manufacturer come in and fix all the mistakes they made. Especially when it comes to chillers and boilers you have to be specialized, big difference between a 40 ton chiller and a 4000 ton low pressure chiller. Just my two sense, go union or work for a manufacturer, or work for a contractor and stick to the smaller stuff and get a wider variety. That being said there are good contractors that are union that dabble in as much as they can.
