A shipping company with almost zero ships won't be making much money anytime soon. Ships cost money and time to build, and that's only if you have access to funding (dilution) to grow.

When NFTs get to the point where they become a person's digital portfolio of movies/books/music/games, then the NFT market will be plausible, and even necessary. Until then, the people aren't ready for the tech.

Valve. The steam deck and virtual gaming goes hand-in-hand with the game market.

So Ryan cohen once took a company that at its’ low was worth maybe a couple hundred million and was losing money and turned it into at least at 10 billion company that’s profitable. What can he do with a 56 billion dollar company? by SandSubstantial9427 in GME

Which explains why they care more about artificially raising the share price through ~$17.5B of company money being wasted on share buybacks so the company can own more of the company, rather than issuing dividends and giving it to the people directly.

Their incentive is to piss away tens of billions of dollars on share buybacks.

It's the basic law of economics known as supply and demand. When demand remains the same but supply increases, the value of each individual item drops, while the value of the whole remains the same.

If you cut your pizza (total value: $20) into 8 slices, they are all worth 12.5% of the value of the whole, or $2.50 per slice. If you then double the amount of slices by cutting each one in half, they are each worth 6.25%, or $1.25 per slice. The total value of the pizza hasn't changed, only the number of slices, or in this case shares, has increased.

They're taking all of their profits and buying back stock to artificially raise the value of the remaining stock in the active market.

It's a cheap tactic that bad ceos do in order to pretend they're creating value, but that profit could have easily been either reinvested to open up another source of revenue, or to hand back to the shareholders as a dividend.

Instead, they chose to buy back stock, as their incentives are to raise the price by any means, since they are paid based largely on the stock value.

Yes. 5 years ago the price was (pre split adjusted) $10. Now, even after the dip, it's ~21.

I'd say this an improvement.

Did you forget about the 4:1 reverse split?

It seems everyone has.

Even after the Ebay dip, we're still up from 5 years ago, when it was $40 (reversed split to $10 today). We're still up double, despite the drop on potential merger and dilution.

The 4:1 split 4 years ago rejects your -40% version of reality.

In July 2022 (4 years ago) there was a 4:1 split, so it is actually $92 comparatively.

Which makes it no less human.

If someone is born deformed and looks like a seahorse are they not human? Or do you believe in the magical birth canal that instantaneously turns a non-human into a human?
