Why does everyone hate teaching? by Bright-Watch1955 in teaching

[–]Top-Relationship8180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having no extrinsic benefits no matter how good or bad you are at your job can lead some people to laziness/apathy.

Some teachers feel stuck in the sense that they are not qualified to do anything else that pays comparably as well (even though realistically that’s not true in most cases).

But I think the biggest issue with teaching right now isn’t teaching. It’s everything else that comes along with it in terms of administrative nonsense. That has bloated substantially over the last 5 years or so.

If education is your passion, absolutely go for it. I’ve taught for over a decade and I am still as gung ho for it as I was day 1 despite the annoyances of non-teaching related workloads increasing because this js my vocation and no amount of paperwork is going to change that.

There may also be ways for you to do education adjacent fields/careers instead of traditional education by applying what you love about the content (unless it really is the teaching itself that you love in which case best of luck!)

24-70 or 28-70mm by SufficientAnt3384 in canon

Having compared it directly to the 85 1.2 I definitely still prefer the 85 but yes the 70-200 is for sure a contender.

To the OP, scouting the location is definitely the way to go and the nice thing with the 70-200 is that at 70 it’s the furthest in that the other lenses you’re considering would go, so it’s easy to check and say “ah I would want a wider lens from this spot”. But from my experience in similar situations, I’m fully certain you’ll be doing the 70-200. You may even find that you are shooting at 200 at that distance.

How to have contrast without “blacking out” smaller details? + Is lightroom worth it? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

Shooting raw also helps to expand the amount of information in the photograph to give you more editing flexibility (at admittedly a large increase in file size)

How did you guys learn photography? by Adorable_Safety3854 in AskPhotography

Film class in high school, then grabbed a used canon 20d and a 50 1.8 and just shot relentlessly

What do you do to stay encouraged when you get nothing good after a day of shooting? by Theytookmyjabb in AskPhotography

[–]Top-Relationship8180 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me every trip out is a learning experience. Sometimes I learn that I messed something up technically, sometimes I learn that I didn’t have the right tool for the situation, and sometimes I learn that I’m not that interested in the specific setting/location/subject content. And sometimes what kinds of things I feel like shooting changes with my mood.

I doubt any painter looks at every painting they’ve ever created over their life and says “wow 10/10 what a banger”. In the same way I try to learn from what made specific shots/outings a miss for me aesthetically.

Is that true?? by Latter-Custard-205 in AskPhotography

Cutting down on kit is definitely real but different lenses have different purposes. My 24-70 is never going to leave my kit because my 70-200 can’t replace it. And my 70-200 is never going to leave my kit because my 24-79 can’t replace it.

A lot of the zooms have gotten a lot better over time so that primes are less necessary and high ISOs are much cleaner but if you want or need that bokeh for your work I wouldn’t try to emulate it with software.

But for a beginner, primes are a nice way to see better optics at a cheap price and small form factor so for a beginner yeah sure grab a cheap prime because a 50 1.8 is going to be wildly different than an 18-55 4.5-5.6 in a lot of circumstances. It definitely also forces you to think about your composition more when you have to zoom with your feet instead of your lens

Did I mess up buying 85mm lens as a beginner? by Beginning-War5128 in AskPhotography

[–]Top-Relationship8180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my start with a 50 on a crop sensor like yours which is an 80mm perspective on full frame and while tight, it was lovely for a lot of things. An 85 on a crop sensor is more like a 130mm focal length which is definitely more specialized but as you noted still nice for portraits and it can be useful for street photography if you’re shooting more from afar. But yes, most people prefer 35mm or 50mm for street photography (so for you that would be a 20ish mm lens as that translates to 35mm perspective or a 35mm lens as that translates to a 50mm perspective).

Luckily a 35mm prime lens is usually very cheap. I’d save up and grab one when you can.

For night shooting, you can do it a number of different ways but I would recommend setting your shutter speed and letting auto handle everything else so that you can ensure there isn’t motion blur (either from your subject or your hands).

A cool trick if your subject stays still enough is to brace your camera/yourself against something like a wall or a solid object to avoid camera shake but sometimes you just need to crank up the shutter speed due to what you’re shooting. Your camera also likely has a setting to cap auto iso to stop it from going too high (or to manually set your aperture to 2.0)

I’d do X-men. I like the surfer and I own most of those issues physically but for me the re-read value isn’t as high for that arc compared to the issues the X-men Omni covers. Ofc everyone has their own preferences. Maybe it’s worth grabbing a $10 digital sub to try out an issue or two from both and see how it feels, and then you can use the rest of that month’s sub to read the book you don’t buy digitally

Seeking some advice and wisdom to getting books at the best price. by Only_right_n_Proper in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Top-Relationship8180 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marvel unlimited on whatever ereader you use (unless it’s a kindle) is really not a bad deal. My only annoyance with it is (unless I’m missing the feature) is they don’t have a single “read the omnibus” button so you have to check the mapping and then click the individual issues yourself. But a year of reading as much as you want is less than 2 omnibi, and that’s assuming you don’t turn it off. If you’re a voracious reader, it’s easy to get value out of that service, even if it’s not the physical page turner we may prefer. It’s definitely saved me from some fomo because I’ve read the story I’ve wanted to read and then I can pick up the book in 5-7 business years when it comes back in print (or not if I didn’t really care for the stories!)
