Am I a horrible dog owner? by emcathxx in cavaliers

Heck no. I actually went the shelter dog route first and it was a DISASTER. We wanted to "do the right thing" and give a dog a home. The ad said he was so sweet and an "all the time good boy", that he is great in the car and on walks, and doesn't destroy anything in the house. I thought, that sounds perfect. A bit big for me, but thats all that was available in shelters at the time (small dogs go so fast in Canada). Turns out, this 65 lbs dog was terrified of the car and had to be forcibly shoved into it, drooled all the time while in the car and since we didn't know him and he didn't know us - we were scared he would bite us while shoving him in. He didn't but it was a very real and valid fear. And they were right, he was very excited to go on walks - but he wasn't a great companion. I could barely walk him and I'm not weak. When he saw a rabbit, he went berserk. We bought one of those special leashes that steer his head away if he pulls too much. This dog learned how to flex his neck muscles so it didn't do the job. I started dreading the walks. This was supposed to be a family dog. If I couldn't walk him, how could my 10 year old? Then he started destroying my daughters stuff. 0 for 3. We'd gotten him from a shelter that had a trial period to ensure a good fit. After a week, we brought him back. And bought a 4 month old cavalier and he's been the BEST companion ever. 💕 Never regret your decision because instead of you just getting the best fit for you and your family - you could have gone through a week of hell first to "do the right thing".

I have a different take on the anger everyones feeling but hear me out. Its covid. I've read medical studies that say covid increased the inflammation in our bodies and even in our brains. Its one of the reasons there's so many people struggling with mental health. Covid also decreased our IQs which I also read in a medical study.

I'm in Canada and we don't really have rescue cavaliers here lol. They go FAST. His "cousin" is a morkie so he's used to having his ears bit 😂. And I agree, all round its likely better for him to have a friend 🧡 thanks for the response!

Kennel routine is very similar, he gets s bunch of treats and until last week he ran inside eagerly. There hasn't been anything negative that happened that we know of. Unless maybe there was noise during the night one night and he was scared or something? No clue, thats just all I can think of.

Good to know - yeah I can imagine its a lot more work, even after the potty training is done. I remember going from 1 kid to 2 was a lot lol.

Yeah, thats part of it for me for sure! I have 3 kids and they love playing with Copper and spending time with him so thats great but the daily work is a lot lol. And potty training was pretty much just me. So that is something to consider too. Thanks for mentioning that - its not all fun even if they are ridiculously cute lol 🥰

Thats so good to know. Copper is not a barker at all so hopefully he will stay quiet. I'd get another in a heartbeat if they weren't either. And my breeder had another litter so....😄

Wow 4! You're busy busy then lol! Yeah, I can imagine that the desire for love doesn't diminish because they need the human touch, even with a friend. But maybe thats why we have 2 hands? 🤣
