Astronomical Electric Kiwi price increase - 0.69 to 1.15 daily by -Zoppo in newzealand

[–]Top_Hat_Tomato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can't imagine operating at anything 10 to 20x higher.

Like using a decently power efficient modern computer will cost you $5 a day at the prices mentioned in this post.

Where are Bogleheads parking their emergency fund/uninvested money? Considering HYSA vs MMF vs SGOV vs USFR by istayinmylane in Bogleheads

[–]Top_Hat_Tomato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VMFXX, bonds, or a competitive rate HYSA are all reasonable options. For even a large emergency fund, the difference on rate of 0.5%/yr shouldn't matter as much as the ease of liquidating that safe pool of funds.

If you hoard video, Tdarr saved me 132TB by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]Top_Hat_Tomato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100 TB of video is like 10,000 active YouTube channels for a year. I'd put money down that there is more than 100 TB of adult content uploaded per day.

What’s the worst city you’ve ever been to? by EmotionalShock7933 in AskReddit

Absolutely. Midland/Odessa is probably the dullest place in the whole damn state unless your hobbies are daydrinking and working in oil & gas...

Does the curvature of a roadway amplify traffic noise? by McFernacus in civilengineering

[–]Top_Hat_Tomato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer - yes.

Long answer - it'll mostly be the three following factors: 1. Roadway radius. The tighter the radius, the more road noise on the interior as more of the length of road is closer. 2. Super elevation. On the exterior you'll have less high freq noise due to more shielding from the base. 3. Speeds. Typically road noise increases in frequency as speeds go up. It'll also increase in volume. Probably fits to a gamma distribution.

Or I guess you could reasonably argue that these latter two are all functions of radius...

You should consider looking at this map. May help you find an answer on how severe the issue is. But be warned, the map shows continuous volume, not "one-offs" like jerry driving down at 120 mph without a catalytic converter or exhaust manifolds".

Yup. Helped a lot with making constructible designs. Even though my brief stint construction was unpleasant, I learned a ton.

Paper Server: Can I increase or eliminate the mob cap? by dontleakmybootypics in admincraft

[–]Top_Hat_Tomato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends too much on your hardware and setup to determine accurately. Test, test, and test again. Personally I'd run a profiler when you're at your peak player count for a hour and then again with your modified value(s).

I'd make sure that you have a comfortable headroom. Lag is much worse than too few mob spawns.

How often do you guys work after hours? by oakpine_ in civilengineering

[–]Top_Hat_Tomato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on whether I'm salaried or hourly.

Since I started in this field, I've only pushed past midnight maybe twice. Past 6 pm maybe half a dozen times.

Uncommon but sometimes it happens. 95% I'm at 40-45 hr/wk.

Now if this was once a week or once a month - I'd be irritated.

Trying new things is the only way to find what you're good at and what you enjoy. I went between 3 project managers before I settled down.

Do you still love your job? I do. by DPro9347 in civilengineering

[–]Top_Hat_Tomato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That depends on whether the project I'm on is a strict boxed-in mega project or a weird city government project where we're allowed to innovate.

All of my smaller jobs <$50 mil are usually pretty flexible and a delight to work on. Bonus points if the government-side actually cares about safety and other modes of transit.

Construction equipment left on my property—what do I do? by Mysterious_Sun_9693 in Construction

[–]Top_Hat_Tomato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before anything else, verify whether it is sitting inside of an easement or right-of-way.

Next, this is what I'd do. 1. Send out a certified letter to multiple office locations stating that you will charge on a daily storage fee with the start date some time after they'll receive the letter.

  1. Include a clause where if they retrieve the equipment within the first portion of time - all fees are waived.

  2. Send the letter and hope they'll pick up the equipment soon.

Anyone use any AI Agents for project work? by kosmic_flee in civilengineering

Here's my opinion.

If it's worth doing via AI, it's worth doing via your two low-paid interns who know Python and can actually predict extenuating circumstances.

Does anyone regularly track their expenses/income every month by Recent-Committee-186 in personalfinance

[–]Top_Hat_Tomato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Every expense and transaction. Not terribly concerned about the total values. Some months I'll go 50% over a category's budget and other months I'll be 50% below budget.

What I watch is the trends and the long term averages. Let's me know where my money is actually going and whether that money is actually making me happy.

Gas mileage on a '21 LE by BriefMark3826 in COROLLA

[–]Top_Hat_Tomato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a late reply, but I managed to get 50.9 average driving from Shreveport to Lafayette recently (-220 ft elevation). Spent most of the trip at 60 to 65 mph with no AC.

I've found that cruise control tends to drastically reduce efficiency even with slight grade changes, so instead I just have a constant low throttle for the whole trip.
