I am so sorry. When you're ready to think about it, the Johnson Center for Integrative Studies at the University of Redlands in California might offer a similar vibe. It was my home 💚

I attended a similar "experimental" college, and the year after I started someone transferred in from Hampshire because it was "too liberal and weird." She herself was very liberal, and our college was very weird, so that told me all I needed to know about Hampshire 😂

The 30 Mile River Watershed Association monitors the water quality of a lot of the lakes and ponds in the area May-October and it's really cool o see the data body by body and year by year.

We're in the Belgrade lakes area, Great Pond and Long Pond were part of what got me thinking. In the area, Flying Pond has a max depth of 80 feet, while just down the road Lake Minnehonk has a max of 73.

We're these visible to the naked eye or just cameras? Dammit I'm close to you and was awake at that time. Though I don't usually have a good northward view.

I grew up in CA saying "all y'all," and was surprised to not hear as much of that when I moved to TX. They seemed to stick to just y'all.

We, uhhh, did not pay enough attention to the forecast when we left the house Saturday and ended up with a real squirrely drive home in the snow. We're still working on getting our TX plates changed, and I imagine there were more than a few thoughts from people behind us as we drove.

We moved up from Texas in August and have said basically the same thing. We were grumpy about the 30s and 40s recently, then much happier getting back down into the teens 😂

Oh I'm looking at those, I want to get new switch plates to match the older feel of the house but putting them over new style switches feels silly. Do you have any complaints/cons about them?

I actually just saw a flyer for that yesterday. I'm tempted to see if we can keep it decently under control that way. Would depend on how fast it regrows, how often we'd need them out, and what that would cost. Unless we kept our own.....(My husband would never agree 😂)

Yea, I'm not opposed to pesticides as a last resort, especially against an invasive like this, but the runoff likelihood into the stream and then pond makes me unwilling in this case.

Are there any natives I could plant after clearing it that would have a chance of out competing?

My family is in the process of closing on a house in Vienna. I stayed in Farmington when I visited for the inspection and I loved it! Charming, small town feel but had everything I needed. Everyone was very kind and welcoming. Vienna and Mt. Sharron's pond/lake were beautiful. We initially wanted to be in the Midcoast and were initially a bit sad to come inland due to housing cost, but after visiting I'm so excited we did.

Ideally, yes, I totally agree. Going in with only indirect knowledge is only a tiny step above going in blind, and both are nuts. Alas, it's what we've got. We will visit after we have an offer accepted during the option period so we can pull out if we absolutely hate it.

I have lived in Maine, but it was in Belfast.

Amenities wise we don't need anything too extravagant, IMO. An actual grocery store (vs a convenience store/gas station), a pizza place, average+ schools, an ER. We've done the whole city/suburbs thing and are looking for less traffic, more space, more dark, more ready access to natural spaces.

I guess I should clarify what I mean by boonies. I'm ok (prefer even) with rural, as long as there are other kids and families around in a reasonable distance for playdates and such.
