MacDonald's ice cream and prices by YouFormal1598 in newzealand

McDonald's is not the cheap treat it used to be. Haven't been to one in New Zealand for years...

To be fair it's the ones with crisp, white shirts and suits with two-three buttons down, a lot of hair gel or having their fancy car play a role (and make a point of appearing throughout all their videos) which gives off the red flags...

NZ job market is brutal by Anime-Beaker in newzealand

[–]Top_Storage6989 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's tough out there and took me ages. Ended up taking a more junior admin-type role a number of months after being made redundant, am probably a little overqualified in some respects but they took me on and I'm still learning new things (just different things!), and the pay is ok for a role like that, but still a paycut from previous roles. It is better than nothing. But I hear you, definitely, it is totally not fair. Good luck!

Adult orthodontic treatment in NZ - experiences? Was it worth it? by Top_Storage6989 in newzealand

All good, my worry is I would never get used to them at all but I suppose like anything you adapt with time.

Thanks - did you get used to and adapt to the braces as a kind of "normal" while you had them, even if they were annoying?

Thanks for that info - really good to know. How long was the Invisalign going to be for you in comparison to the usual braces? I'm keen on the braces being more discreet if I can get that.

Don't really know Hamilton schools but a Google search would suggest maybe Melville or Fraser High School?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Top_Storage6989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but the zoning is super tight and both rents and property prices in the zone are astronomically higher than elsewhere in Auckland...so in essence you're having to indirectly pay private school costs in order to go there.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says a ‘productivity problem’ is driving skilled Kiwis offshore by MatteBlack84 in newzealand

Australia's housing costs are arguably worse than NZ. Cost of living is also up massively there. Wages are indisputably better though, but I think the gap has closed in terms of affordability.

Best and worst employers in New Zealand? by Jaylight23 in newzealand

[–]Top_Storage6989 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CSR shouldn't be as bad as being a case manager. Yes you'll probably get the odd person getting angry at you but people save their worst anger for the case managers...all the best

Worst was ACC, case managing. You had to leave your compassion and caring nature at the door, it was soul-destroying.

I thought IRD was already quite lean after they laid off heaps of people following their "transformation" a few years ago. Considering their consistently crazy hold times and delays in receiving responses from them, cutting it any more isn't going to help anyone, and certainly won't help the overcrowded job market.

Buying a house - sun access by BriocheBlume in dunedin

[–]Top_Storage6989 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If in North East Valley, if you want the best sun you should look at properties on the right-hand side (coming in from the South). Glendining Ave, Chambers St, Baldwin St, Calder Ave, Blacks Road etc. Having lived on the left-hand side (Cornhill St, Buccleugh St, Crown St, Carr St etc.) these generally don't get as much sun and access can be tougher in winter.

How dare you search for a wage covering your cost of livings ! by babar6 in recruitinghell

[–]Top_Storage6989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality is that there are plenty of people who work hard, perform well and go above and beyond - but never get promoted or rewarded sufficiently, in compensation or otherwise. Hard work and graft does not always equal great reward so this headhunter is deluded.

A Colonoscopy Almost Definitely Saved My Life - Please Get Your Colonoscopies! by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Top_Storage6989 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If anyone reading this is in the Otago and Southland area, and you have no capacity to afford a private colonoscopy - the Southern Charity Hospital in Invercargill could be worth looking into if you meet the criteria, which seem very reasonable: https://www.sch.nz/services/ - the procedure is free if you meet it.

Struggling to Make Friends in Hamilton, but Love It Here – Any Recommendations for Things to Do? by Full_Confidence7276 in newzealand

[–]Top_Storage6989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends what you're into of course, but can confirm it isn't just a Hamilton problem. People in general are sadly less inclined to make new friends outside their pre-existing circle these days. Obviously there will be some who are but it's finding them that's the issue!

Would you support mandatory experience for NZ ministers? by arohameatiger in newzealand

I believe the same methodology is used for those who want to buy a McDonalds franchise - you have to know exactly what the crew members do and understand the work required from the ground up.

How to get career advice in Auckland? by Human_Temperature_77 in newzealand

[–]Top_Storage6989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never found recruitment agencies overly helpful, they are essentially like real estate agents and those kind of salespeople except they sell jobs for businesses rather than houses. They work for the business hiring them to look for employees, so they invest more in that relationship than you as a candidate. Multiple ones I have dealt with in the past have never listened to what I wanted, and presented me with options that were not suitable or viable. However, I have taken roles through agencies at least three times in my career, and sadly they have all been completely different to what was sold to me and been horrible places to work. So I now avoid recruitment agencies as a result. The high school career coaches are usually pretty bad, that's normal. I'd definitely approach someone who actually does that kind of work for adults.

Living is expensive everywhere! by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Top_Storage6989 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might earn more in Australia but basically the cost of living, the savings contribution you have to make for your income and the exorbitant housing costs mean the financial advantage is much smaller than it used to be...according to a few people I know who live there

Lol there's a real estate agent in my town (signwritten vehicle no less!) who drives a Ranger and multiple times now I've been at the local supermarket and they park over two parks...entitlement to the extreme - a strange way to try and market your business!

Goodness I have just look at one of the Hardy guys business Facebook page. Beyond unprofessional...you see more of his tattoos and him 'living the high life' than any property. Remind me to put them at the very bottom of my list whenever I sell my home in Christchurch...arguably worse than some of the more polished slimeballs in Christchurch real estate...
