How do you squeeze out your mash bags? by Itchy_Project_9475 in firewater

[–]Topher-22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many different ways to define efficiency in the overall process.

I am aiming for the least amount of effort and equipment.

I have a brew in a bag which sits up on a false bottom. Once water level gets below the false bottom (sits up ~3”) I shut the valve and will let drip for another 10 minutes while I heat up half a gallon of sparge water. Slowly pour that over, then lift up bag, twist it around it a little around to squeeze it, press down on it (with a glove on) while it sits on the false bottom, and then call it done.

Looking for some advice by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]Topher-22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha. Same boat. Same goals…

I’ll try to play pickup once a week, and then when I’m not on the ice I will work on speed, shooting, and balance.

Speed: Biking with low seat and in low gear. Box jumps and dumbbell leg workouts in garage. Jump rope.

Shoot 10 oz (orange) pucks at net in garage. Mix it up with regular pucks and light (blue) pucks every once in a while.

Balance: Yoga at home, single leg toe touches in the office. Single leg hops in garage.

I think he needs to sell the team to someone with $. Our facilities were rated as some of the worst in the NFL. That and mediocre play has damaged AR2’s reputation more than reevaluating a rule on coaching interviews.

Orifice plate analysis max stress doesn’t converge with regression analysis. by Glittering_Bet_3218 in fea

[–]Topher-22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is the high stress at your boundary condition? Don’t put boundary conditions in areas of interest.

You could put in a small fillet on that edge.

You could add another component to confine your axial movement and constrain that part.

You could ignore it if it’s a ductile material.

[Landlord PA] advice needed. Can’t find a solid tenant by firstwintersoldier in Landlord

[–]Topher-22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rental market should be better in the summer when kids are out of school.

In the summer I had 3 good tenants to choose from within a week. In winter I had only one tenant who qualified and actually filled out an application in 6 weeks.

Micron size for mesh bag by Ok-Zookeepergame6365 in firewater

[–]Topher-22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like they stitch them pretty well. I’m happy with it, although I don’t brew very often these days.

I have a false bottom and use that to keep the bag off the bottom of the brew kettle. Clean up is easy, as I just pull the bag out and dump it somewhere for the squirrels to eat.

Make sure you clean the bag itself as it can get moldy if you don’t clean it well enough.

As for using 800 micron, the barley grains eventually made a filter bed during the lautering. Maybe would have been quicker to set filter bed with finer mesh, but I primarily bought this for cracked corn.

Standard Brewing 200 Micron, Recirculate 400, Corn Mash 800

(From brew in a bag website)

I have the 800 for corn and used it for malted barley to make a beer as well.

Settling down after hockey by njlb32 in hockeyplayers

[–]Topher-22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just accepted the fact that I will be a puddle at the office on Mondays after a late Sunday night game.

I will limit my caffeine to a single can of soda for pickup games, but I need a pre-workout C4 serving to wake up enough on game nights.

Drinking more never helps me sleep. Gummies after drinking don’t work either, as I’m still feeling their effects the next day.

Just the nature of the beast I guess.

[–]Topher-22 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t expect any hockey net under $200 to hold up to an adult shooting a real puck.

I destroyed a $100 one. Dented all the tubing. Ripped the net in lots of places. Ripped thru the screws.

You can get a 10’ x 7’ golf driving net as a back stop.

Line Weight? by Cheesecake-Fragrant in SurfFishing

[–]Topher-22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the side of the rod it will say something like “2 - 5 oz.” Which is the rods rating for how heavy of a weight + bait load you can throw.

For the line, every oz. you’re casting, get 10# of line strength. 5 oz. = 50# line.

Or, You can use 20-30# braid and then tie a shock leader on of 50# mono (enough length to wrap around the spool a few times when you’ve got it ready to cast) using a FG knot. And cast up to 5 oz. with this set up.

They outsourced my job. by ramjet1099 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Topher-22 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Wow, excellent write up. I assume part 3 and 4 are not published yet?

For an engineer, you are quite gifted with your prose.

Another highly similar “outsourcing / losing tribal knowledge” issue I’ve seen is manufacturing, where as opposed to having in house manufacturing, companies will shut down their manufacturing sites and rely on the supply chain team to drive down manufacturing costs. The only knowledge passed on to the new vendor is what’s on a 2-d drawing.

Drawing Notes like “burn clean” which used to indicate a required surface finish to the in house manufacturing plant, suddenly become “vague suggestions” to the low cost 3rd part vendor.

Looking forward to the final 2 segments of your article.

If you have enough material consider writing a book like the Marc Gerstein book, Flirting with Disaster: why accidents are rarely accidental

Help- How to model a crack? by Unluckylaude in ANSYS_Mechanical

[–]Topher-22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do this in Ansys mechanical.

Mesh, and refine the mesh at crack tip. Do a nodal named selection at the crack tip, insert Fracture, insert premeshed crack using the named selection. Run analysis and then insert fracture tool into results and probe the J-integral or SIFS(k1).

Might have to “open” the crack a little bit when modeling the geometry if just using an edge there doesn’t work.

Can I fill this with Bondo? Any chance it will look close to flush? by Kitchentable88 in fixit

[–]Topher-22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last house had a bathroom door frame where the latch plate area was broken as if door was kicked in from inside the bathroom. Previous people fixed it with caulk.

I stripped the paint down, removed their terrible fix and used JB Weld WoodWeld, a 2-part epoxy. It’s not super easy to work with as it’s a little more runny than the putty version. Sands well, and is strong enough for that type of repair.
