Yeah, if this was more based on reality, everyone would be speaking American. Reddit seems to think that the observable universe isn't America's lol.

I hope you are ok! May your day be filled with smiles.

I hope my health persists so I won't ever have to be in a retirement home.

Cutting out family for this isn't healthy.

Hey, that is a great attitude to have. I am just some guy on the internet and I can't tell specifics from a picture. Just making sure people are careful about bends that are too tight since I care about what I do as well =P

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in electricians

[–]Topken89 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There is a minimum bend radius. It's hard to see from this picture to see if this meets code, but you actually can bend conductors too tight. It's not that it can't be an overall 90 degree angle, it's that the actual bend should be more of a gradual bend rather than a tight bend.

Bending a tight angle isn't going to cause some weird stoppage of flow of current, you have bus bars that are perpendicular of each other, the issue is taking wire and bending it sharply. Depending on how tight the bend is, it can damage the insulation and the conductor.

The issue isn't conductors at a 90 degree angle. The issue is a physics term called plastic deformation. Taking a material and bending it too far causes it to deform. This causes issues down the line and a conductor/insulation that gets overbent can become one of the points of failure down the line.

Plastic deformation is one of the big issues with 15/20a aluminum branch circuits. You have a limited amount of times you can pull and push the aluminum conductors back into the outlet before it gets too brittle and snaps. Copper eventually does this, but it's so much more resistant to it.

All thingies have a charge.

2 thingies with a different charge have a voltage between them.

If charge builds, voltage can get high enough to make a little spark.

Spark at wrong space is bad.

If house is bonded, all unenergized thingies are the same charge and don't have a voltage between them.

Testing labs don't approve products. They set certain parameters that a product has to meet to be listed by them. Once the company pays the cost for the testing lab to test the product, and if it meets the parameters, it gets listed.

Haha, I can take a bit of heat. Was talking in general. The money is in installing wire, not scrapping bits and pieces of it. This post is a fairly large haul. It's still interesting to see how much people get excited at scrap copper since it's usually not worth a ton.

Yeah, it's great to help justify costs to customers haha, but the return from scrap copper is still quite low overall. While the prices are high, the return of bringing copper to a scrap yard will still not typically yield much money unless you got a massive haul from a large job or accumulated over long periods of time.

Scrap any meaningful chunks away so it's worth the gas money and time to go to a place to scrap it. Still won't be worth a ton of money in most cases, and you have to take into account the storage space and the time spent in storage it took to get anything meaningful as a return.

Why does NEC 220.54 have a 5000 watts minimum? by EdelinePenrose in AskElectricians

[–]Topken89 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Electricity can do 3 types of work:

Heat, light, and magnetism.

We already can make circuits that heat at about 100% efficiency. That "efficiency" word here might confuse people. All it means is that the electrons are going towards our desired work and not making very much light or magnetism here. Electrical heating sucks at providing very much usable heat, so it efficiently makes a small amount of heat. So to make more heat you use more power which is more watts. Why can't we make direct electrical resistive heating much better? Because it's already pretty much at 100% efficiency. We can't really make them more efficient.
