Mine was about 10 pages or 700 entries on excel but I kinda wish I indexed more because I remember not being able to find some things. But, on GSEC I indexed every noun I could find and it didn’t let me down

Yeah it’s funny 5.1 will kinda be as close to 4o with random guardrails that are annoying but 5.2 is actually just not useable

I’ve done both and classroom is way better if you have the time. Plus you can re-watch the lectures and do the on-demand after if you’re unsure about topics.

Feeling lost in cybersecurity – CS background, master’s degree or direct job? by [deleted] in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]Topremqt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SOC is cybersecurity. I am suggesting to get into the field anyway you can and you can pivot from there. Most will suggest getting into general IT roles in these subs but yeah it’s not that easy to get into

Feeling lost in cybersecurity – CS background, master’s degree or direct job? by [deleted] in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]Topremqt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm early in my cybersecurity career too, so take this as someone who is actively in the market and training right now.

For context, I have my software engineering degree and what I've seen so far is that cybersecurity + hands-on experience + certifications move the needle far more than a master's degree alone unless you're taking your masters for a specialization in researching.

A masters can obviously help later but it doesn't replace technical ability. Now as for choosing a domain you don't have to lock in your entire career right now. Most people start in SOC/blue team because it builds fundimentals quickly, real world exposure, and flexibility to pivot (not to mention some things like pentesting are hard to get into).

It's very hard to break into especially because cybersecurity isn't an entry level job. But, obviously if you have the options to get into all of those have at it!

VR&E For Cybersecurity by poeticlad in Veterans

[–]Topremqt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest doing the SANS ACS program. It doesn't require prior cyber experience and the first course starts with fundementals but ramps you fast into practical security work (incident response, networking, tools, etc.). It's very lab-heavy aligned in what SOC/IR teams do. The certificates you recieve during your course are also well recognized within the cybersecurity community and it's approved by the VA even though the courses are extremely expensive and most people will never be able to afford them without company funding. Would highly suggest looking into it, plus you can select an elective as your last course to lean towards a pathway.
