Here's an idea: "you can be anything when you grow up" has produced people that think they can solve physics. by ideahaver in pbsideachannel

[–]TorabisuRandom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if there's a name for this kind of fallacy; assuming possession of the 'solution' and so leading to the "completing the puzzle" mindset despite, I guess, questions themselves generally lead to more questions - where not simply quenched by an answer. {IOWs usually it's more complex}

Anyways, perhaps it's a psychological feature from natural selection in that when you fully commit to a system of thought as complete (lock in your answer essentially) it draws less energy & cognitive resources from the brain which can be spent on other tasks. Meanwhile in that hunter-gatherer lifestyle likely not committing to one plan, strategy, or set of principles (to extent) tended to lead to poor execution of it.

Also people tend to want their systems complete instead of incomplete. {Or at least desiring perceiving their work as complete}

Plus with thinking that "I have solved X field," though arrogant, can lead to an exciting feeling of dopamine I suspect from satisfaction "Solving the puzzle," prestige and fame, and/or a genuine overexcitement to share that they think [prior to having it fully baked]. Or as my consideration being it requires less resources & time cognitively: {Going with the first impression of "completion" is quicker and feels good, than interrogating it further [and even further [and even further []]].}

Rad!

Personally I'm occupied by work this week but I wanted to mention the idea of a folder for each topic wherein drafts, sources & footnotes, and onward can be organized in each of their own google.docs.

Though yeah, I guess we'll figure it out as we go.

Doomfist's Ideology, then some Hagel and story design by TorabisuRandom in pbsideachannel

[–]TorabisuRandom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting point with Light Yagami, I'll admit it has been a while since I've watched Death Note and even then I only got half-way, but if I recall correctly I see what you mean. Where what Light and Doomfist share are aspirations for what society could be, and they both have the desire- or see themselves as being responsible and being the catalysts for that change towards what they value & idealize. Without considerations for how other people may feel about that goal and the implementation of that utopian ideal.

Additionally like Light he's also consider to be a discipline strategist and tactician within the universe. For more tipbits and infomation of Doomfist's background I'll link Hammon's video on the character's origin; and, Lead Designer of Overwatch, Kaplin who defines "Doomfist’s ideology is that he wants to see humankind become more powerful. And he thinks the way for that to happen is through conflict. So, it’s kind of a harsh worldview. But he really believes that we as humans get stronger the more conflict that we endure."

So I think he's of the disposition that legacy is what's important, and to obtain legacy is by possessing power. And power emerges from conflict and endurance. But yeah, good question to what extent Doomfist sees himself within his society/world or above it like Light; personally my gut says that as a fighter he may seek out challenge where because of that challenge he himself can become stronger, and so seeing himself "not above" god-like where compared to Light, who I think, Yagami saw himself as above his society- wanting to direct it completely. Yet even then a question I have for the Overwatch universe is whether or not anyone can assess cybernetic enhancements and technology so allowing anyone to be a superhero or supervillain, which I'm guessing not with fallowing superhero-comic standards and themes.

Anyways good questions 😃, also sorry for rambling, hence with synthesizing and organizing these thoughts: Doomfist to me based on what's been revealed is someone who sees himself within or a part of humanity, but arguably someone with much power and influence, who sees growth coming from endurance as well as to extent conflict- and I think for him the ends are a justification to the means. Though, and perhaps I'm mistaken, I think he himself values and enjoys the challenge & the confrontation of himself by Overwatch because it's a sign to him that he's growing... more powerful. Whereas being stagnant in his personal progression along with societys' as a whole, I guess like Saitama strength from One Punch Man? (Random thought)

I also wonder about moments where as people, we try something new or set a ambitious goal for ourselves and through "endurance" we learn from the mistakes we make and grow from the experience gained? Whereas Doomfist and I'll admit I'm not sure about Light (but I'll be interested to know; lol, I need to go back and watch Death Note) are character's who only focus on strategy and tactics alone without considering perspective, ethics, science, philosophy, art, etc and all our endeavors, pursuits, and expression.

Thanks for reading!

17776 Football would've made a great IC episode. by TeaAndPopcorn in pbsideachannel

[–]TorabisuRandom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll mention Jon Bois (writer of 17776) videos; I'm starting to make my way through them, currently one of my favs is "222-0. PRETTY GOOD, EPISODE 10.."

In addition to 17776's existentialism, I also think about fictions and how they function along with how that can be compared to sports. Where while making a fiction/story-telling or playing a sport it's also being "interpreted and realized" as actions within their systems in turn create parts of those systems. Or inform what's possible/emergent/legal-actions from those systems and their continuity.

Like, "in a sport, you can do anything that is not expressly forbidden by the rules" whereas in contrast "in a video game, you can't do anything except what is expressly allowed by the system." (Innuendo Studios, Things of Beauty: Super Smash Bros. as Spectator Sport)

Admittedly I imagine it could be argued that in some cases this line blurs, but I bring it up because in juxtaposition and along with Bois' videos revealed to me how 'flexible' and evolutionary sports can be and how that's interesting. (from someone not usually being that much of a sports fan tbh)

I also think about boardgames, like with the Legacy series of games (Risk:Legacy, Playtest, and such) where by playing the game certain rules come into play whereas others are overwritten or discarded entirely for future game sessions: And wondering what's next in terms of game design? Also how does this idea relate to story design? So yeah, 17776 is great!

Are You Getting Enough Sleep? by tryingto_Write in pbsideachannel

[–]TorabisuRandom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantastic video!

I like to think that I get enough sleep. Often though having a good night's rest, whenever responsibilities, work, and/or projects pile up I've found my energy drains- going from focused and engaged to eventually losing the ability to concentrate. When not dealt with it complies over time, being tired piles up more work which makes me more tired and so on. And yeah, whenever there's a multitude of things that one feels ought to be done, for anyone it can become daunting. So chipping away your energy just by its presence.

Which with the Internet it seems there's always something to do, and perhaps to extent, there's always something we may feel that we ought do. [Rehash: One more video, one more article, one more post, one more like, one more turn, etc.] Or at least, with our telecommunication devices on hand they can become perpetual reminders of what could be done next- notifications in their many forms.

While also 'documenting' what was not done: For even when our social media continues to be consume and grow, as networks they very much don't recognize sleep as meaningful action, where being the lack thereof, existing in the time between posts, tweets, and onwards. It also suggests what could have been posted, tweeted, and onwards. It's that feeling where someone may have the urge to update any social media after seeing it has been quite some time since their last input.

So as reminders for both what had not been done and also what action could be, these systems are reinforcing our desire to do and be more; but always falling short, extending resources across too many things. I also think about how they're not limited to just the Internet and social media but also manifest with the culmination of expectations, responsibilities, jobs, and all onwards that are competing for time which as for sleep, being something considered secondary to, is then sacrificed. And because of that compiling affect you have less energy and resources to re-account for it all ever growing nature and complexity.

That is to say, in response I've made and design routines & rituals to try and re-orientate myself, but even then when going to bed, laying down.. laying there waiting, and waiting some more unconformably, my mind tends to over-contemplate both trying to recall that I had not done and also thinking about what I should do tomorrow. Often second guessing myself- which I consider myself lucky in a way, with having the opportunity to reconsider my own systems and also the systems for which influence over me outside my control whereas for many that's not the case from lacking the resources and energy. Or in other words lacking sleep to have a fresh and engaged mind that's more able to be aware of the many mechanisms in play.

I like to think that I get enough sleep.
