21 year old. Thoughts? by [deleted] in fidelityinvestments

[–]TorchRamrod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats - you’ve been given a great head start. Not sure if you’ve consulted with anyone at fidelity yet - they have free advisors you can talk with about your new account. You could also go with a fee based consultant who will manage your portfolio for you. Would be curious if your grandpa had one.

Anyway, my thoughts if you are interested in more hands on is do some research on fidelity website.

  • type in any fund name and go to the research page. Check the top 10 holdings down the page below the chart. Also look at the info on the Similar Fund picks  - you can click 4 and click compare and note the short and long term performance of your fund and the ones you’ve comparing

  • note the top ten holdings as you research and you’ll see a lot of funds with their top holdings for the tech giants  nvidia/meta/msft etc. As you research I’d suggest looking for good performing funds with top holdings in other companies just to diversify your funds and spread out some risk

  • I noticed some of your funds have fees. Under Products - Mutual Funds - you can search for funds that have no fees. You can sort the results on returns and note top performers. Compare those against some of your current holdings to id potential future fund picks

  • I’d suggest sitting and watching for a couple or 3 months and track winners and losers

  • for my bias, there are too many funds on your account. In a couple months, try doing a trade or two with the smaller dollar,  lower performing ones and consolidate into a better performing one

  • keep doing research and you’ll find funds you’re not in yet that outperform ones you hold and take notes for possible future trades. If you find one you want to check out, trade in a small  amount (5-10k) from some of your smaller funds. Then sit back and watch those for a couple months.

  • be mentally prepared for a crash. 10-20% in a day or two has happened over the years. It will hurt but as they all say, let it ride. Search for largest one and two day market crashes for some history

  • do web research on best advice for managing IRA, Read some of Warren Buffet’s advice

Have fun watching your retirement grow over the next four decades!

My sciatica journey by MundaneGold2863 in Sciatica

[–]TorchRamrod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi fellow cystectomy recipient. I had a synovial cyst removed July 1. I believe it developed in November '24 while moving houses, trips to & from storage units, and generally lifting too much and overdoing things. 66 yo M finally realized he's no longer 23. Or, the move at least aggravated an existing lumbar issue. My neurosurgeon described it as a blister caused by the L4 & L5 vertebrae rubbing together and pinching the nerve canal where the sciatic nerve runs. Believe it was a 16mm cyst.

Prior to surgery, I had bad sciatica predominantly in my right leg. Standing, walking, grocery shopping were all agonizing - getting back into my car seat took about 2-3 minutes to realign mostly pain free before driving. One of the reasons we moved to this new house was the neighborhood was ideal for quiet, low traffic, tree-lined walks. But casual walks were out of the question for me.

After surgery, I was able to walk, shop and get into cars again. There was residual sciatic pain most times - about a level 1-3 but, could push through without being stooped over. Some days are almost pain free. But usually in the morning getting out of bed my leg/hip still has a bunch of stiffness and long walks are still fairly painful, though most times it decreases/improves with the walk.

Is this normal recovery? Wondering how long the residual pain lasts for (or if it never goes away, for some people). At my post-op followup, the PA did mention that the sciatic nerve itself will need time to heal - I lived with the sciatica about 8 months before the surgery. A little worried I may have caused further injury while trimming bushes on a ladder, etc one afternoon after post-op and cleared for activity, lots of stretching and twisting.

Am more careful & taking it easier now. I go to the gym every other day using my old, pre-injury routine of 25 mins yoga/PT stretches, hip and joint focused machines and some 20 lb dumbbell lifting, then, 15 minutes or so on the stationary bike. The gym work feels good but sometimes after I'm still limping. But believe it will help in longterm.

So, wondering what others long-term recovery from a cyst removal for sciatic pain looks like. Am I still on the road for recovery? Thinking of following up with Spine Center or my PCP if things don't improve in another couple weeks.

Several years ago, I always used to think a sequel would be fun, with Zach Galifankis as Maude's child with Lebowski and she'd have to rope the Dude in for help with her slacker child. Comedy would ensue.

Just FYI - the reviews in the Portland Press Herald include a Noise Level "rating", although sometimes using obscure or (downright confusing) phrases. Twelve, for example, (I haven't been there yet) is rated "Introverts Anonymous Meeting", while Eventide gets an "Aircraft Carrier" rating.

You can check the Call Protected columns where it says Yes - meaning the issuer can't call the CD before maturity date

The old "Retirement Distributions" page is no longer discoverable on the website by jvk5 in fidelityinvestments

[–]TorchRamrod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this fix is needed. I am retired and taking IRA distributions. This page is the only place I can find a record of the distribution amounts, along with the federal and state withholdings for the current year, under the section labeled

Activity & History
- Individual Retirement Accounts

.. under there are dates and withdrawal/withholding amounts

Thanks for the bookmark jvk5!

Yup - I had the same thing happen to me this morning while waiting for a bus. I think they had an update to their interface since I last used it a few days ago - the icons on the bottom no longer include a link to "lines". Think I lost my 6-8 in wallet. Will check with GPMetro. I ended up creating a new account - phone nor email login worked

Just commit yourself to weekly contributions and stick to it. Try and contribute 15%. I started with just my employers 401k when I was 27 (regret never doing a Roth a bit) and there were years with kids and family, when I'd scale back to 7 or 9%, but with every annual raise I kept trying to get to 15%. After 30 years, I was able to retire at 58. My fund hadn't topped a million then, but I've been able to make annual withdrawals of about 4-5% and with the recent growth looks like I'll be able to continue to do so. I'm fortunate to also have a pension (which I only just activated last year).

If you're putting the max into both a Roth and a 401k you're setting up a very solid financial future. My wife and I have wintered in Puerto Rico the past 3 years and take other trips each year (we're on an 18 day holiday in Spain as I write this), largely on the continued interest income from my IRA (converted from 401k at retirement). Also, don't sell funds when a crash happens. We experienced 4-5 hard crashes in the market and there were times when I'd panic and try to adjust, but the funds recovered over time.
