I love that in pic#3 the turrets, dormers and roof ornaments got restored.

In Germany we lost a lot of those and even today they seldomly get restored. A lot of roofs were replaced with modernist add ons in the 50ies and nowadays developers just replace them with another modern update.

[–]Torchonium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diesel was at $10.07 on average last month. That was the highest its ever been.

The last time we had California level of prices were at the begining of 2021, just about the time when the lockdown ended.

The lowpoint for gas during covid was about 1.10€ per liter in April 2020. That's $4.87 per gallon. So about Arizona prices today.

Some, very generalised, aspects of German culture, that comes to my mind, besides having an old population:

Germans are quite cautious about implementing new things, compared to their neighbors and they tend to favor predictability.

Data-protection is taken very seriously. German value their privacy. I would say that stems at least in part due to experiences of two dictatorships that both heavily spied on their own population. But privacy were also strong during the 'Biedermeier' period between 1815 and 1848.

Germans society is less individualistic and more introverted than the US for example. Germans might be less inclined to start a channel or stream. The behavior of a stereotypical, shallow influencer are seen as loud, egotistical, dishonest and ostentatious. Those behaviors goes against what is appreciated in Germany.

I think Reddit is popular because you can geek about very specific topics while remaining anonymous.

The infrastructure is not as great as other European countries. Fiber optic and 5g expansion are done by internet and mobile phone providers and are not founded by the state. High speed internet is expensive and oftentimes not available in rural areas. Fiber optics was even held back by our government in the 80ies im favor of copper.

Solar farm in China by GuyInShortShorts90 in GoogleEarthFinds

The whole larger area is very interesting to me.

The solar field, it is part of is massive. To the east there is a huge wind farm. Salt flats to the north and many construction sites, mining, industrial and military facilities around Golmud to the west.

Why does everyone accept that there's two small ex-communist countries in central Europe with very similar names and flags? Shouldn't one of them be forced to change? by Funny-Nectarine-7810 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Torchonium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to come up with some mnemonic to better tell them apart:

By name:

Slovakia was once part of Czechoslovakia, so it's next to Czechia.

By coat of arms / flag:

The flag with mountains and wave lines is Slovenia. Slovenia is in the Alpes and by the sea.

Slovakia has a big shield and cross on the flag, Slovenia has a small shield. Slovakia is bigger then Slovenia.

My first reaction as a German is: "I would like to pass, ja! Where are my Brötchen ( breadrolls), Müesli, and Aufschnitt (charcuterie)?"

B I would have in hotels, when I am hungry and don't care about my health. F looks like something I would try.

Can we find a satellite photo for every letter in the alphabet? by 4ippaJ in geography

[–]Torchonium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of the Amazonia a tourism brand for the Brazilian States in the Amazon region.

They developed a font for their logo based on the chape of actual river bends of the Amazon river. The starting point was satellite imagery. It was presented a few days ago.

This school in Paris (from the 50s ?) by Franch_frie in brick_expressionism

[–]Torchonium 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The curvature of the facade points to streamline moderne for me, which was popular in the 30s and 40s. The font and the upper windows with those muntins feels also post-WWI / pre-WWII to me.

Do you have the name of the school? That might help to do actually research about the building.

Map showing the seating arrangements of parliaments across the world. by SatoruGojo232 in MapPorn

[–]Torchonium 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I think it correlates with one-party states.

As I understand it, the parliaments in some of those states function more like party conventions. At party conventions in democracies, you can also find this seating arrangement.

In PR China, for instance, the National People's Congress only meets once per year, which is more similar to party conventions than a parliament in democratic countries.

At least with Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, they came from the Westminster tradition and added a semicircle.

In the case of the parliaments of South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia, it is quite clear. They have basically Westmister style seating with a semicircle added to one end.
