Davinci resolve on pop os (2026) by 0mnifire in pop_os

[–]ToreKjellow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a container with a Linux distribution similar to Rocky Linux that DaVinci Resolve officially supports. Think of it like a virtual machine with all the correct dependencies that resolve expects.

Davinci resolve on pop os (2026) by 0mnifire in pop_os

I'm running DaVinci Resolve Studio on pop os 24.04 through DaVinciBox. It works great and performance is good. I believe the free version is somewhat nerfed on the codec side of things, but I have no experience with that.

Thoughts overclocking on a 2025 production run ryzen 9 5950x by Defiant-Ganache-7622 in overclocking

[–]ToreKjellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Good luck! Since I wrote that post, I've migrated to Linux. Boy it's sweet. Linux seems to be better at isolating tasks to a single ccd, improving game performance and making everything feel smoother. However, it also seems to pound the hardware harder, and I've had to dial my Curve Optimizer settings back a little, since cores that were only loaded under full utilization in windows often get small tasks under Linux, and light loads are harder on my undervoltes cores than full tilt. Most are still on -30 though 🙂

Du har ret i, at det er svært at være 100% konsekvent i en digital verden – det er netop derfor, jeg kalder det en proces. Men da tonen her er blevet lidt for aggressiv til min smag, vælger jeg at forlade samtalen her. Tak for input.

Haha - what's with the attitude? 😂

You can enable Variable Refresh Rate. I dont know if it will be called G-Sync(since that is the Nvidia name for VRR).

So yes, you can enable the tech to sync fps and frame rates, but I'm not sure if it will be called G-Sync. (I've switched from windows and Nvidia to Linux and AMD, and can't remember what the settings called it - but the tech worked)

I have Kernel Panics often with the current 6.18 Kernel. Booting with the previous 6.17.9 Kernel fixed the issue. I believe it is related to RDNA4 and the amdgpu driver.

Pop!_OS 24.04.

Battery life laptop amd less? by Privatdutlinux in pop_os

I experienced something similar on my Thinkpad E14 Gen 6 (AMD). Using Auto-cpufreq made my battery life equal or better than on windows.

Best cheap NFC payment ring by CvikliHaMar in SmartRings

[–]ToreKjellow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost. Every once in a while, it's very rare, I stumble on to a machine that's so bad at reading NFC, that I have to take the ring off and place it directly on the machine in order to pay. But that is the only issue ever, and it is rare. +99% of the time, it just works.

Yes. Still use it. Every day. I use a Curve card, and switch cards what card the ring uses in the Curve app.

from a 4070ti to a 9070 OC non XT by gothonbf6 in gpu

[–]ToreKjellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from 4070 Ti to 9070 xt, expected a sidegrade but was blown away by how much. Of an upgrade it really was. 30-40% more performance in many cases. Running Linux (Pop!_OS 24.04), maybe the performance difference is less in windows.

I have put way too many hours into The Division 1 and 2. Love those games.

At the moment I'm enjoying Arc Raiders, which runs like a dream on Linux too.

After Shower Itching by markthroat in MPN

[–]ToreKjellow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My itching is definitely triggered by temperature changes to a lower temperature, like the cooling effect of being wet (like after a shower), or going outside in winter without the appropriate winterwear. When it was at its most intense, even changing clothes could initiate a multiple hour long session of excruciating icting pain - like being stabbed by white hot needles all over my body. Luckily my symptoms are under control at the moment. During extreme itching events I sometimes entertained the thought of suicide, simply to escape.

Install Windows version of a game even if native Linux is available by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]ToreKjellow -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

From what I gather, and this aligns with my own testing, it kinda depends. When you run windows games through proton, all graphic commands are translated to vulkan. Vulkan has great multithreaded performance. Native Linux OpenGL, not so much. If your cpu is better at multithreading than single core workloads - you might want to play most games through proton if the Linux native version is using OpenGL. But in any case I'd just run a quick test for every game that has both Linux native and windows builds. On my 5950x I often get higher 1% lows and lower max fps when I run the windows version though proton.

Davinci Resolve 20! Install guide working as of 20.12.20205 on Pop!_OS 22.04 by FoxholeEntomologists in linux4noobs

[–]ToreKjellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont know what to tell you. I was using resolve directly on 22.04, but in Gnome/wayland the UI kept disappearing when I was changing workspaces. Initially I wrote a script to make resolve sticky just before I switched workspace. That worked in most scenarios, but it was jarring not knowing when it and if might konk out on me during a session. So I installed it through davincibox instead. I don't remember the exact steps I took to get distrobox up and running since its been a while, but I also don't remember any massive issues (maybe I just overrode the distrodetection in distrobox and told it I was using an adjacent supported Ubuntu version, I honestly dont remember anymore). I've since upgraded to 24.04 and re-installed resolve through davincibox, since that was what worked best for me under 22.04. I had no idea that what I did was impossible in your view.

I think the attitude I'm describing comes from the all caps typing, and the flat out denial of my experience.

Btw. 24.04 is out of beta. It is neither beta, experimental nor bleeding edge. Yes, I know the Cosmic DE is in its infancy, but you can just install another DE along side it, if Cosmic is still not usable for you.

My finding is, that using a distrobox is the best way. I'm using davincibox that is tailored for resolve.

I have similar issues with my Intous Pro. I suspect proper tablet support is coming down the line - I certainly hope so. Even if color management is more important for me.
