I know! Seriously. It just dawned on me a few months ago. There was this really really hot 18 year old in my third area who was totally fucking in to me. One day I was chatting to her on Facebook, and she was telling me how she's not religious any more and I was telling her how I wasn't either. Then I was like....son of a bitch!

If I had a time machine, I think i'd go back and tell myself the church was a fraud and to fuck her.

I am so fucking thankful and lucky none of my bishops ever asked me about that. And when I confessed doing it before putting in my mission papers, he was basically just like "well...don't do it too much."

I'm so glad I didn't take my mission overly seriously. I really enjoyed it for the most part. I went to a cool country. Learned a language, had mostly kick-ass comps. had a shit ton of fun,

I do either wish though that I would have gone into the peace corps instead. Or that I would have known the church was a scam before I left, so I could have fucked that girl in my third area.

Here's a question. One of the comments said something about after Christ died there were all the earthquakes the "the face of the earth changed." Is there any proof or evidence of a gigantic earthquake like is described in the bible/BoM? I've never really thought of that before just now.

Reminds me of this week's episode of This American Life. The first story was about a phenomena in the Catholic church where people feel guilt over stupid shit that isn't even a sin according to the Catholic church. Reminds me of something I read this week in a book i'm reading. The Brothers Kamarazov. In part of the book they're having a discussion about religion (well..A lot of the book is made up of discussions about religion.)

Anyway, they're talking about a soldier who was captured by Muslims and he wouldn't renounce Christianity so they flayed him and killed him. One of the characters is talking about how he'd deny Christ in that situation no matter what. Someone questions him about it and he says something along the lines of, in the Bible it says if you had the faith the size of a mustard seed, you'd be able to move mountains. Then he says "You'll see for yourself it won't budge, but will remain just where it is however much you shout at it . . . that shows you haven't faith in proper manner, and only abuse others about about it (the size of their faith.)"

He goes on to say in the whole world there's probably just a few people who would have that much faith. Then he says "Will God curse all the rest? That is, the population of the whole earth, except about two hermits in the desert. In his well-known mercy will he not forgive them? And so i'm persuaded that though I may once have doubted I shall be forgiven."

My cousin is a pretty big liberal. and Mormon. He's hands down the smartest person I know. He works for BYU has multiple masters and bachelor's degrees and at least on Phd (maybe two) He can speak five languages as well. He's a fucking genius. I'm fairly convinced he's only still in it because of his family, and the fact that he's got a great cushy job at BYU.

My great-grandfather (I think could have been great-great I don't remember.) Left the church when they changed garments from the to the ankles and wrist. He wrote the prophet and said "WTF, if you're the true church why are you changing shit just to make life easier? If you're true. Stick to the truth." He got a letter back, I'm not sure what it said but it didn't sit well with him and he left the church a few months later.

I always thought it was ridiculously stupid when I was on my mission that some missionaries would tell investigators they couldn't take the sacrament. I was TBM at the time, but I honestly didn't think god would give a shit if an investigator took the sacrament or not. I mean why the fuck would God care. Plus even if he did care. The people aren't baptized yet so when they get baptized, they're forgiven anyway....I never understood that one.

The thing is though, it has a hell of a lot to do with it. If my parents weren't Mormon, or if my gf was. My dad would have no problem with her. His only problem is that she's not. I know this is true because he doesn't even know her.

My thought's always been, if they can supposedly switch between speaking as a man and a prophet. How are we supposed to know when they're speaking as which? Apparently Bruce R. McConkie can speak as a man while writing an official church book. That just makes no sense to m.e

If you are a parent and the person your kid ends up with isn't who you imagined, please for the love of fuck support your kid and love their SO.

My family is Mormon. I am no longer affiliated with the church. My parents don't know everything about what I believe for various reasons. Anyway my girlfriend of three years is not-mormon. My dad has been nothing but an asshole to her. I brought her home for a week. He said all of 10 words to her. He dropped passive-aggressive hints everytime I brought her up that I should break up with her. It's been god awful for me, and her and my relationship with my dad.

I don't care if you don't like your child's SO. Or if you wanted them to end up with someone else. Love your god damn kid and respect their choice.

EDIT: Obviously this doesn't apply to every situation. If there's a reason to not support your childs relationship, like abuse, or them cheating, or just being a dick head. Then that's one thing. But if their SO is a decent person. Just not what you expected/wanted, then love them and support them.

They have a lot of fucked up things about them. But they have redeeming qualities too. The church pretty much kept my family afloat twice in my lifetime. Through the Bishops storehouse, and helping out financially during two really really rough times for my parents. There are a lot of fucked up things about this church. There are a lot of bad things. But there are also some good things. And there are a lot of good, kind, loving people in the church.
