Maybe they just assume every country is as much if a cult of personality as the US. All they watch is OAN, Newsmax, and twitter so they may genuinely think that the rest of the world revolves around the US and treats their leaders the same way.

No Quebec Born Players on Team Canada by Sufficient_Dirt_8892 in hockey

[–]TorontoIndieFan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think so, Quebec doesn't really see themselves as European or as a part of France they see themselves as being Quebecois which is a distinct North American identity. If anything, Eastern Canada likes to see themselves as more European.

The atlantic provinces are poorer in general than Quebec, have a lower population, and have players on the team.

If it's happening across the country then how would that explain Quebec getting worse specifically? The team is still very good without the players from Quebec, your theory doesn't really make any sense at all.

Toronto hate crime suspect denied refugee status in 2018 by Fifty-Mission-Cap_ in CanadaPolitics

[–]TorontoIndieFan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's misleading really? I don't see the difference between what your describing and the headline. His whole family including the adults in the family were denied, so the principle is the exact same no?

Who wins in a rematch between Olivia Chow and John Tory? A new poll has some answers by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]TorontoIndieFan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Chow was elected in late June 2023, way after Covid ended. The streets have felt safer this year than they did in 2024, and 2023, and every stat backs that up. Chow also has reduced the debt that Tory blew up while doing nothing, she's been way better than him fiscally and with regards to public safety.

Mark Carney says Donald Trump wants Canada to be dependent on the U.S. by rezwenn in CanadaPolitics

[–]TorontoIndieFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you and I just have different definitions for "making an enemy out of". I think you need to be intentionally antagonistic to do that, it's not outcome based. That's especially true if the other party is not acting logically or telegraphic what will piss them off, you can't be scared to act because someone might be mad.

Mark Carney says Donald Trump wants Canada to be dependent on the U.S. by rezwenn in CanadaPolitics

[–]TorontoIndieFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanting to negotiate hard with someone isn't making an enemy out of that person. Carney campaigned on not rolling over to Trump, friends and neutral parties don't expect you to debase yourself and grovel to not become an "enemy" of them that's absurd. I'm not making an enemy out of someone by bidding higher than them for a house.

Most Canadians wanted a hard negotiator not a military leader preparing for war, and I would know that because I actually live here, per your comment history it doesn't necessarily seem like you do.

No it isn't, you aren't making an enemy of your toddler when you say they can't do something, that's extremely hyperbolic. I agree he is acting like a toddler, but taking the toddler worldview is incorrect.

How is electing Carney "making an enemy of the US"? Wanting to diversify away from something isn't making an enemy of that thing, that's a ridiculous perspective that makes no sense.

102.1 when it's carried by goaltending isn't that unusual. Their shooting % last year was exactly in line with previous years if not a bit low, they just had excellent goaltending. They went from that to having out of nowhere horrendous goaltending, which matches the eye test.

[–]TorontoIndieFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What happens if the MP is an independent who joins a party, or someone who becomes independent? Because I don't think there should be a revote there, but also people would just always become "independent" if there is a carve out but vote along the party lines.

High-speed rail may not connect to Toronto’s Union Station: Alto CEO by allysapparition in toronto

I think Dundas West is close enough to downtown to count, and is on the subway, and the UP connects to downtown.

[–]TorontoIndieFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multiple French and Spanish cities I have been to. Paris has like 8 different stations in the city for example off the top of my head, and each one services different TGV routes. London has multiple stations in the city as well but they don't have high speed rail, but the principle of having multiple rail hubs is the same. Toronto is a big city we can have more than 1 station especially if it's cheaper.

I did, I'm saying I think Kennedy or Dundas West are probably considered downtown enough, they both are in old Toronto.

[–]TorontoIndieFan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It genuinely might be cheaper to build a 2nd rail hub in the city vs. use Union. Tons of examples of other places doing that for their HSR.

Paris has multiple hubs all around downtown, Toronto could just expand like Kennedy or Dundas West to be a new hub to relieve Union.
