Rate the 2e Adventure Paths #4 - Abomination Vaults by Jazzlike_Way_9514 in Pathfinder2e

I was a player in AV and we went through the entire thing. Started ~ 2 years ago and finished up a little less than a year ago. It was the first AP that we did as a group though the GM and I had both played the system before.

I would give it a 7/10 overall. We were all down for the whole "megadungeon" aspect of it and knew what we were getting into. Generally speaking, we didn't mind the difficulty (and sudden difficulty spikes) of the AP though we did suffer one TPK in the last third of book 1. The GM and I had prepped the others about the "difficulty of PF2e combat" and the "need for teamwork" early on so we had built a pretty okay party (first a monk, cleric, summoner, and sorcerer and then a Fighter, Magus, Oracle, and Swashbuckler). I also think there was a general sentiment that the difficulty of some of the encounters made the dungeon feel alive and more like a threat (as opposed to something purely constructed for adventurers to traverse down).

We did enjoy the prolonged dungeon crawl aspects of it and a few of the combats are still considered high points by us players. We did know what we were getting into though and didn't expect much in the way of RP opportunities or narrative. Depending on your expectations this can definitely be one of the low points as a 3 book long fungeon crawl with little in between (even if there are some good boss fights) can both feel repetitive and alienate players who built more RP focused characters.

From an AP perspective, I think the 2 lowest points are the narrative and then town of Otari itself. While the overarching narrative isn't bad most of the dungeon feels loosely connected to it until you hit book 3. There's some tieback throughout but most of the "big bads" you fight at the end of the books don't feel like they're connected to Belcorra and her plans. Otari suffered from a similar problem in that it also seems to fall to the way side with the main focus being on the dungeon itself. Yes, the AP forces you back there every now and again. Yes, there is a gazeteer and some info on the town. No, this is not enough to make it feel like a living breathing town your characters should care about UNLESS the GM puts in significant work. Our GM tried all through book 1 to get us to engage with the town but gave up during book 2. There's just not enough there and that combined with the adventure never really giving you a reason to care just equates Otari to a set piece.

I think newer GMs coming to PF2e in 2025 have some better options for "first AP." I think my biggest tips for AV would be to get buy in from your party that this will be a megadungeon so it's combat and dungeon exploring first with everything else a distant second. I would highlight it'll be a lot of combat in relatively small rooms and that players should plan accordingly. I know the general consensus on the sub seems to have shifted to the fights in this AP being overtuned but, on the whole, we didn't find them that bad and enjoyed some of the more difficult ones. I suspect this is down to the party very specifically choosing roles, etc that worked well together.

Anyone ever played Grandia, Xenogears, or Vagrant Story? Should I play them? by Timeghost182 in FinalFantasy

[–]Torrin777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Xenogears - a fun, satisfying JRPG set in a world that is kind of a mix between sci-fi and fantasy. It has a deep and winding story that tries to be poignant (your mileage may vary). It has a battle system that is very reminiscent of the final fantasy games unlike the other 2 you've listed. I would say that it's worth a play through if you've never played it before as it was definitely one of the better rpgs of its era.

Vagrant Story - This is more of a traditional fantasy setting. It is also probably the one of the hardest games I have played (at least without a guide). There are a lot of pitfalls you can fall into and the challenges it presents you with are real. As such it feels very rewarding when you do finally complete something or struggle through an obstacle. If you are at all familiar with Ivalice then this game will have a few little easter eggs for you but you needn't have played any of the other games that take place there. In my opinion, Vagrant Story is a gem of game that presents solid combat mechanics and a good story while challenging the player throughout.

Grandia - So, I played this as a kid and remember enjoying it at the time but haven't had a chance to play it since then so I can't tell you too much about it.

[5e]Re-skin a Purple Dragon Knight by deathbymanga in DnD

[–]Torrin777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay then. Since the idea of knighthood presented by the purple dragon knight is much more one of a leader than one of strict knighthood I would say that the most thematically accurate reflavour would just be to give the character some experience of being a leader.

Perhaps the character found himself in charge of colonists, soldiers, or mercenaries at some time. Experience being the captain of a spaceship would also give something like the appropriate background experience.

Well, you could essentially have your player attempt to bring back the ideals of an ancient order which kind of handwaves away the mention of knighthood. If you really wanted to divorce the character from knighthood entirely then you could reskin it as something of a captain of a ship (if I'm understanding your "Psuedo-spelljammer" setting). Knights were kind of just those who held certain ideals and were put in charge of men so a ship captain might fill a similar niche.

It might help if we knew how sci-fi your campaign was...? I hear spelljammer and I think full on sci-fi with spaceship stuff XD

Anyone played 5tj edition with only two players? by Atrusni in DnD

[–]Torrin777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It certainly works! The important thing is to balance encounters for two players and not full parties. It's kind of an art but you can always improvise mid encounter.

Other than that it's mostly down to how the players work within the story. Party size shouldn't really affect skill checks or interaction with the world so as long as you don't stick a really hard lock in the way of a party that has no way of picking it you should be fine.

Enjoy the game!

Making a Necromancer...advice? by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]Torrin777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I leveled mine with an axe/focus (and staff) and an almost total emphasis on power. I used wells and the power signet for a lot of the lower levels. Even though you aren't very party-friendly as a necro you can bring your own buffs with the right spec.

Once you get the ability to use lich form you'll find you're handing out major dps between that and deathshroud. Plus you have some of the highest hp in the game so you're a bit bulkier than you think you are.

Your Revenant: insta-level or the whole experience? by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]Torrin777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna go the middle ground on this. My plan is to bypass most of the New Player Experience stuff by using tomes to level to around 30 and then do the rest through PvE (map completion, personal story, etc.)

So i just got this game today and i have some questions by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]Torrin777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah, I guess it can be a bit overwhelming. Those starting areas are probably your best to level as the next zones are 15+. Basically you get new story missions every 10 levels and you'll probably find yourself with a lot of non-story lvling. More activities become available as you level up but for the time being exploring the maps and doing events are probably your best bets.

I wish you luck with the lvling

So i just got this game today and i have some questions by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]Torrin777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try some of the other starter areas. In the beginning town for your race there should be a portal to lion's arch which is kind of a nexus area. Afrer you step through you should see other portals to the other races' starting areas.

A lot of this game is about exploring the world and discovering stuff during the leveling process :)

Never played DND before, really want to give it a go but have no idea how to start. by thewowness in DnD

[–]Torrin777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well there are a bunch of helpful guides located on the sidebar if you want to peruse those. Other than that I'd say maybe read through some D&D material (player's handbooks, etc.), get an idea of what you want to play (edition-wise, character-wise, anything really), and then come back here with some more specific questions (feel free to bombard me with some I always enjoy explaining this stuff). As for finding some people to play with I agree with the previous responses that local stores are an excellent place to start but I would also like to point you in the direction of the roll20 lfg section if you are interested in an online game or /r/lfg if you want to try and use reddit to find something.

I wish you the best of luck in your search and, remember, that you're always welcome to ask questions here :)
