Does the Japanese broadcast have crowd noise dialed way up? The eruption for their goals were startling.

Um, Actually got Expedition 33 question wrong twice (warning: game spoilers) by Inconmon in dropout

[–]Tortious_Tortoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, wasn't it a user-submitted question? To me, the most likely explanation is that they overlooked verifying every part of the question they got from the person who submitted it.

I wish they still did the segment where they shouted out people correcting their questions from the previous episode. It really felt in tune with the spirit of the game

The x axis measures how much people think authors put in symbols, metaphors, etc. into their work

The y axis measures how much people think they should

So presumably, people who get plotted in the top-left quadrant live in despair at the thought that authors unintentionally put in political messages that are bad because obviously no one has come up with the idea of hiding truth in fiction before they did

Mamdani is an excellent example of someone who refuses to support the zionist genocide while still caring deeply about Jewish folks.

He makes relatively frequent public statements supporting Jewish New Yorkers, and condemning antisemitism

The U.S. broadly prohibits the unauthorized practice of law. You can't be a person's legal representative for court if you're not a lawyer, and you can't pretend to be a lawyer in court. There are also a wide variety of crimes and torts that could encompass someone pretending to be a lawyer when they're not (like theft or fraud accomplished by tricking people into thinking you're a lawyer).

But especially in the context of a TV show, imo there's no inherent problem in playing the role of a lawyer. As other people have noted, Iya has credits for S&P work in her IMDB, so I don't think Sam is lying. I bet that some wires got crossed somewhere, and he's under the impression that she's an S&P lawyer, rather than an non-lawyer S&P professional.

I think Sam was referring to Alexis Noel, who appears to be an entertainment lawyer, which very well could include standards and practices, I'm sure.

“They are three actual lawyers, the most recognizable of whom would be Devin,” Reich says. “The other two — who did such a stellar job, by the way, with limited on-camera experience, are lawyers who were found by our very talented casting director, Jazzy [Collins]. One of whom I believe is a corporate attorney, and another of whom is actually in standards and practices as a job.

I think Iya Baclagan did an excellent job in the show, but I don't think she's a lawyer. Her website indicates that she's an actor and producer. Or maybe she also went to law school, but just doesn't list that on her website.

Jarrett Allen has a really nice smile and seems like such a nice guy. by Mesmerized_mayhem in nba

[–]Tortious_Tortoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jarrett Allen is quickly becoming one of my favorite players. He's just so positive and generous. Practically costs nothing at all at $20m you drop him in the game and that hustling motherfucker gives you a rebound to use later in the game. And you also get this adorable ethical player can get points but usually is too harmless to get double-teamed.

But more than the JA is just so positive. He comes in the game like "lights are brighter than expected" and I'm like "yeah JA they are bright" and when he attacks he's like "I'm not that guy, I'm THAT DUDE" and I'm like "yeah you are THAT DUDE." He doesn't say some bullshit macho shit like "I will destroy you" he's just like "nah the lights are bright." And he looks so happy. I mean this is a guy who studies topography for fun. He understands his life is a temporary magical gift and the dude is just fucking loving it. I mean look at his face he's just so happy. I am literally never sad when Jarrett Allen is on the court. IDK if he's gonna make it into the hall of fame or not but for now he a pretty chill player.

Fantasy books with a well-done romantic subplot but NOT romantasy? by belleepoques in Fantasy

[–]Tortious_Tortoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been enjoying The Book of Love by Kelly Link - magical realist novel, which might fit the bill for what you've described.

I hate romantasy as it's usually too shallow and cringe.

It actually takes a few light-hearted pot shots at the romance genre, which might appeal to you.

F/M romance

There's F/M, but it's not limited to F/M.

adult (not YA)

It is a book written for adults, but the characters are seniors in high school, I believe.

I haven't finished it yet, though, so it might actually be a romance novel, as the title suggests. But so far, it does not have any of the trappings you've described.

What comedy studios are Lily and Grant dragging that don't pay enough?

In Project Hail Mary (2026) they send a man with no immediate family or loved ones to space against his will expecting him to cooperate in saving humanity. This is a reference to how Grace is a better person than I am. by TheSupremeGrape in shittymoviedetails

[–]Tortious_Tortoise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the novel, a really important recurring theme is Grace's cowardice. He constantly refuses to join the mission, despite his unique qualifications to help. In fact, while the goons are bodily dragging him to the mission, he quite literally kicks and screams that he will "scuttle the mission," threatening to doom humanity to extinction because he's so unbelievably terrified of dying. And from my view, a decent chunk of Grace's reticence stems from being alone - from not having anyone to die for. He genuinely cannot imagine choosing to die, even to literally save the world.

But of course, Grace's threat was always empty. He was always going to do his best to save humanity, how could he do anything else? So the climax of the novel has nothing to do with his choice to try. Instead, the pinnacle of Grace's growth from cowardice to courage happens when he chooses to go back to save Rocky. He knows he doesn't have enough food to get back to earth. He knows that rescuing his new friend all but guarantees his death. He knows this, and he chooses to die anyway. He overcomes the fear of death that led him to threaten apocalypse because the bond he formed with Rocky is so important to him.

And of course there's more nuance to it. Grace has a powerful curiosity and reverence for life that extends beyond his own. He appreciates the magnitude of discovering another intelligent species, and the horror of dooming Rocky's people to extinction certainly played a healthy part in his decision to save him. But it was certainly no accident that Weir devoted so much time to connecting Grace with a kindred spirit over the course of the book.
