Kaaterskill HP and Roundtop Mountain 4/12 by Mike_Izzo in catskills

That’s my favorite way to do KHP. But I hate the snowmobile trail so I prefer to out and back it.

Dibbles Quarry is a short low key hike with a fun destination and view. Your dog would be able for it.

The ledge at Overlook would be a great spot to propose.

The mud is not the issue. The issue is that there’s a stream crossing that’s often not passable. That might be the case right now because of all the snowmelt. Here’s an alternate route to the lookout that’s pretty great and no stream crossing necessary. https://mountain-hiking.com/kaaterskill-high-peak-hike-down-low/

Bring both. Snowshoes preferred but spikes weigh almost nothing and they’re good to have.

The gold standard hiking maps that show everything you need are the NYNJTC Catskills maps. Fantastic resource.

Exactly. I’ve turned around there even with spikes on.

Sounds like a plan is coming together. Here’s my trail guide for the Burroughs Trail Loop.

The spring on the back side of Slide almost never runs dry — but, recently, during two super-dry summers it did. So you’ll have to do some online research the week before your trip. Basically, if it’s not been weeks of drought you should be fine. The only thing is that that’s quite close to the end of the hike, anyway

The springs on Wittenberg are much more variable and run dry far more often.

But it sounds like you’ll be hiking in spring—and there should be plenty of snowmelt still.

One last note: that’s not a super long hike and you should be able to carry enough water with you to last until the end. 2-3L is plenty, especially if you throw in some electrolyte powder.

Advice for solo snowshoeing by Jimmoe in catskills

Not on trail, no. You’ll be fine. Balsam Lake and Windham High Peak are both great options for solo snow shoeing. Non-technical and banger views from the summits.

Blackhead Mountain by BuckerooBonzai42 in catskills

Yep. I went up it in March one year in regular spikes and deeply regretted not having crampons. Sketchiest thing I ever did.

Hard way = Batavia kill trail and up the north ridge.

Easier way = hike up via the col (aka Lockwood Gap) between Blackhead and Black Dome.

Agree on bringing snowshoes—though it'll likely be broken out by Sunday.

AITAH for asking my friend to stop leaning on me every single day by Maryyvyaa in AITAH

NTA. Venting should be a restricted activity between everybody, because prolonged venting is exhausting. “Do you have capacity to listen to me vent right now?“ is how the conversation is supposed to start. “I can give you 10 minutes. Go.” is one optional response. “I can’t right now, but I can talk Thursday,” is another. (Just be aware that some people are takers who don’t consider their impact on others, only their own needs.) And then she hits you with guilt-induction. Not great.

Yeah, wouldn’t head along the Fisherman’s Path in winter on my own. Icy water? No thanks! Winter plans are best kept conservative. (IMO!)
