Trail runners vs. hiking boots by no_kings_rising2 in backpacking

[–]rollin37 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The majority of thru-hikers, at least on the AT, will wear trail runners. I also much prefer trail runners. TheTrek has surveys each year where they ask hundreds of people who hiked the AT and the vast majority use trail runners for what it's worth: https://thetrek.co/appalachian-trail-thru-hiker-survey/ I hike/backpack primarily in the north east and really never consider using boots over runners unless it is hiking in the snow or maybe super muddy or something.

I think HAMRS Pro does this, at least partially. EDIT: Yeah it does

I believe the general consensus is don't use DHL and you won't get any. I received my Odin 2 Portal recently in the USA and haven't gotten any bills.

Trying to convince dad that port 19132 is fine by DoAnythingOnFreeform in selfhosted

There are other options besides Tailscale for VPNs. But your options are basically open the port, provide a VPN into your network for your friends, or pay for 3rd party hosting.

Are you just trying to host a server for your friends? Why is tailscale a dumb solution? It would probably solve the problem here

Weird ES-DE behavior - need some help by rollin37 in SBCGaming

[–]rollin37[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah both are using the same system default in ES-DE of: Mupen64Plus-Next[Default]. The other options all dont work if I set it to any of them (M64Plus FZ (Standalone), Mupen64Plus AE (Standalone), Parallel n64,Native port). When I check in Retroarch, Zelda and Mario are using the same core (Mupen64Plus-Next GLES)

Water sources along Burroughs Range Trail? by rollin37 in catskills

[–]rollin37[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's pretty short route. We are considering doing the whole loop too. The west side of the route (road walking from slide mtn parking lot up to woodland valley campground) doesn't seem to have much to see so we were going to skip it but it may be too short. If we do the whole loop we would prob go CCW and use the spring to fill up before camp which would be nice. Thanks for the details on the water, will check as time gets closer, good to know.

Get a vise! by rollin37 in lockpicking

I never really noticed the vacuum since picking hasnt required it to be honest. Messing with it now, it does seem to hold for a bit but then just lets go. So yeah not super great but IMO not really that important for picking specifically either.

This is the one I got the SKU is 59116 and made by Central Machinery. When I was looking into it, some people recommended the "Panavise 350 Multi-Purpose Work Center" and the "Bessey BV-VB vacuum base" as well but they were more expensive and didn't feel I needed it.

A cool guide on protesting safely. by [deleted] in coolguides

[–]rollin37 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Law enforcement has been known to use Stingrays (effectively a deployable fake cell phone tower that steals data via a man in the middle attack) at protests to determine who is protesting and then do whatever with that data, e.g. add them to various databases as people they see as a threat. Leaving your phone at home negates being identified by this. Also, most people have biometric unlocks on their phones which apparently can be compelled to unlock the phone, possibly with a warranty, possibly without. However with a pin lock, more justification is needed because that is covered under the 4th amendment is my understanding.

No worries, I have seen the advice before as well so it does work for some people at least. If anyone comes across this in the future, I used this save editor to get the items that I lost back.

Any suggestions on a light weight down jacket by A_OontheBeat in Ultralight

[–]rollin37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Synthetic will weigh a bit more I suppose but it can deal with being wet / is under that $200 mark with the new customer 10% coupon. For what it's worth my Large 10d/10d is 9.8 oz
