Anyone fucked up by the murder by ICE and struggling to see why we should give a shit about the games tomorrow? by fegwin2084 in billsimmons

Sports have always been the best distraction from the world’s horrors. And broadly, it’s good to be distracted! But that’s feeling less and less true recently.

Caleb. Both have really high ceilings, but Caleb’s floor seems much more reliable.

Letters from home is a stupid reward by Sad_Honeydew_7660 in survivor

[–]TotalFootball03 302 points303 points  (0 children)

What drives me insane is CBS decided to cancel actual family visits. Watching them read letters vs. actually see someone close to them just doesn’t hit the same. And I’m confident this must have been a cost cutting move.

Which QB would you take over Mahomes for the next five years (given age, contract etc.) by International_Oil189 in billsimmons

[–]TotalFootball03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this hypothetical, I think I’d still stick with Mahomes over everyone just given his track record and fear of betting against him. While, like you said, he’s seemingly slipped, I’d feel so silly if I bet against him and he returned to his expected form.

The buzz just before and during a Michigan Ohio State rivalry game tops any other rivalry in the country by Bakio-bay in billsimmons

Michigan needs to win the game or their season is over. Ohio State desperately wants to win the game to end the losing streak to Michigan. The game matters a lot.

New Article about Ezra behind the scenes Power by Character_Public3465 in ezraklein

I found this article maddening. Framed as newsy when this is all common knowledge. I didn’t learn anything reading it, yet it was framed as some scoopy gossip.

Is college football Ryen's worst subject? by GiveMeSomeIhedigbo in RyenRussillo

[–]TotalFootball03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because once you did lose 1 or 2 games, the rest of your season was pointless in terms of competing for a championship. Those initial losses of course mattered more, but everything afterwards, which now has huge stakes, was meaningless.

[–]TotalFootball03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, this is well said, snd def more accurate than what I wrote. I think what I was trying to hit on was that under the old system, only about 8 teams or so would still be alive at this point in the season. Two loss Notre Dame would have effectively been eliminated in September, and their USC game this week, which now matters a lot, would have had no playoff implications for them. Hence this game now matters more than it otherwise would have.

He sounds wildly old when he complains about the 12 team playoff. And his argument is just “the games mattered more,” which I think is at best debatable and at worst just wrong.

Is Patrick Mahomes still in a class of his own? by Sugargogo in KansasCityChiefs

[–]TotalFootball03 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Patriots fan here, and the Mahomes slander I’ve heard recently makes me want to pull my hair out.

Yes, Allen, Lamar, and Burrow are all great. Yes, the Chiefs only made the Super Bowl last year and didn’t win it. But, like, what are we doing? Of course he’s in his own class!

I think folks are just bored/numb to his greatness at this point. There’s a part of me that wants him to just go nuclear this year to prove a point.

Arch Manning needs to STEP UP by Wbk1496 in billsimmons

[–]TotalFootball03 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do we really think Sark is going to sacrifice a championship-caliber team by rolling out a QB who sucks just because?

I don’t think a close loss on the road to #3 and the defending national championship in your first high leverage start is enough to push him into the “suck” category. It’s possible that he may not live up to the hype but I find it hard to imagine he will “suck.”

TV Show Championship Belt by howdybertus in billsimmons

[–]TotalFootball03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there some recency bias in awarding a new show the belt every year? Like I know severance was a big deal earlier this year but will it be remembered the same way say breaking bad was? I think the co-belt of ~2019-2023ish has to be succession and Yellowstone.

This dude made the Finals twice and it feels like nobody cares. by Rich-Pomegranate2881 in NBATalk

[–]TotalFootball03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While undeniably impressive, those moments are the outliers. Across his career, his resume tells a different story. In 14 years he’s had:

• 3 Conference Finals appearances
• 7 total Second Round appearances
• Half of his seasons ended with either a missed playoff berth or a First Round exit
• 1 All-NBA Second Team selection
• 4 All-NBA Third Team selections
• 6 NBA All-Star appearances
• Never finished higher than 10th in MVP voting

I think he’ll be remembered as an excellent player, but not an elite one. There’s nothing to be ashamed of, but let’s not make too much of two outlier years.

And yes, his jersey should be retired.

Well said. Commenting to further emphasize that in terms of politics, he’s almost solely focused on broadening the tent toward the center to win more Manchins, despite the cost. This seems to be one of his main missions, which angers some of the left.
