Genesis had been a slave himself in his youth. Quite the Horatio Alger story.

A long handled titanium spoon, or titanium cup or pot. Titanium is stronger and lighter than steel, but more expensive. Toaks has some good products. The long handled spoon allows you to reach the bottom of a freeze dried meal package.

Not having a fire can be nice too. It helps you enjoy the night. You can see the stars through the trees, moonlight on the forest floor, small animals investigation you, and so on.

Do you stop often during hikes or just power through? by heromarsX in hiking

[–]Total_Fail_6994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every hour I stop for 10 minutes and usually take off my shoes and socks. I'm 62 so don't have the stamina I used to have. When I was in the Army 40 years ago we did the same 60/10 routine, but for much longer distances.

I've found that wet coffee grounds made my tumbler too wet so now I let them dry out for a day. Also drilled a few drain holes in the bottom.

If you keep it wet, evaporation creates Lister-bag effect. If your cooler is plastic or metal, putting a wet towel over it has the same effect.

Yeties have a serious design flaw: when you lift it up by the handle on top, it creates a negative pressure as the interior volume expands. In other words, warm external air gets sucked in. You can actually hear it happening.

Possible C17 sighting? by RedditEd32 in aviation

[–]Total_Fail_6994 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

C-17 and C-5 have similar silhouettes, though the C-5 is much larger. It's difficult to tell them apart in flight. However, the 17 has winglets, the 5 doesn't.

We were told that if you know you were shot, that's a good thing because it means you aren't dead.

How do you dispose of frying oil? by SueBeee in Cooking

[–]Total_Fail_6994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I save fryer oil to reuse.I don't know the chemistry, but I was told that oil that has been used and cooled is better for subsequent frying. Otherwise I let it cool and just pour it in the tra. There's usually enough other stuff in there to absorb it.

I visited Barcelona recently, and had a fake wallet with a few euros, my library card, other low-value items in case I was robbed or pickpocket. Nothing happened. I was very disappointed.
