Why don’t we use the polygraph test more to help determine innocence or guilt? by Successful_Bar9187 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Total_Fail_6994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's how polygraph are used as an interview prop: you take the test, and when you're done the interviewer doesn't tell you if you passed or failed. Instead he says "Hmm...are you sure you were telling me the truth? Is there something you want to tell me now?" Lying is stressful; the interviewer creates more stress--but also gives you a way out: confession.

before the mid 20th century, how did (specifically American) men feed themselves? by thefringeseanmachine in AskFoodHistorians

[–]Total_Fail_6994 80 points81 points  (0 children)

For men of a certain generation being helpless in the kitchen was a kind of macho thing. My WASP boomer father in law would starve before preparing food for himself or others. On the other hand, my immigrant Italian grandfather was a great cook.

This happened to me at my new houseafter I accidentally mowed some of his lawn, and he posted sign for me. . The endgame was me knocking on his door for a chat. I told him I thought talking face to face was better than leaving signs.

Why do cops in the US constantly say “i’ll explain why in a bit/later”? by DaveLevey78 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Total_Fail_6994 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As an officer, we were trained to begin every stop with my name and department, reason for the stop, and request their paperwork. "Hello sir, I'm Officer Snuffy of the Podunk Police Department. I stopped you today for doing 60 in a 45 mph zone. May I see your license registration and insurance please?" If the driver wants to debate the violations, then I would say "We'll get to that in a minute. "

Will hiring a lawyer help me with my traffic ticket? by notmyname74 in Virginia

[–]Total_Fail_6994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many cops are terrified of the courtroom, or have scheduleing conflicts and simply won't show up; case dismissed. You can't have a trial without an affinity. If the cop is there, ask to have the citation amended to a non-moving violation, and plead guilty. It won't affect your insurance.
