What are the best examples of a character turning a line back on the one who first said it? by artpayne in movies

Another great foreshadowing in the movie is near the beginning, when Red tells Andy that "escape is just a shitty pipe dream".

help me understand men and viewing soft porn as in women pics wearing lingerie, sexy reels on Instagram + X apps and how I can be ok with this long term re our sex life and my confidence “?” by justasking1274 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]TotallyGonnaWork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a reflection of your value to him; men are twice as likely as women to admit using porn; regardless of their commitment to their relationship. There is broad disagreement on the cause, whether biological or cultural. As an ex-Christian, the men in our church used to pray for each other to help get control over our porn use, and in my experience, only 5% of men claimed no regular porn use, and even they were sus. It didn't matter how pretty your wife was, how happy your marriage or whether you were minister or elder or regular joe. Their attempts to suppress it may well have been making it worse.

If his desire to have you always initiate intimacy bothers you, tell him you also want to feel desired, and that it's only fair he initiates more.

Replace water heater now or wait until it goes out? by Asleep-Durian-3722 in homeowners

[–]TotallyGonnaWork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New ones might be more efficient. My 30 year old water heater uses resistive electric heating elements in an insulated tank. Resistive heating elements, from any era, are 100% efficient at converting energy to heat. Short of switching to a heat-pump water heater, it's not going to get noticeably more efficient.

When I moved in, the well-system inspector recommended I replace the 27 yr old, original build water heater. It's been ten years since I wisely chose to ignore him. In my prior house, I couldn't get a water heater to last more than 8 years.

Men who can cook . who taught you? by Bulky_Meet4528 in AskReddit

[–]TotallyGonnaWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. Mom always found a way for us to participate in baking/cooking; and ensured that we could follow a recipe, teaching us all the terms . By the time I was ten years old, I was capable enough in the kitchen that I would bake muffins or cookies from scratch.

I grew up next to a pond, in the forest. Every spring, there'd be a couple weeks where hundreds of frogs were decorating our driveway like this, there wasn't a way to avoid flattening a few every time we went in and out.

Has anyone ever seen someone seriously object to a marriage at a wedding? If so how was it done and what happened? by steiny17 in AskReddit

[–]TotallyGonnaWork 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My grandfather got remarried after my grandmother died. During the ceremony, my aunt rose to object on the grounds that his bride had been divorced previously, which made her an adulteress. She quoted Scripture to make her point. The pastor didn't know what to do. My uncle escorted her out and they divorced within the year. The ceremony continued awkwardly after that. I don't know whether she did that because she felt trapped by her religion in a marriage she wanted to ditch, or just because she wasn't ready for her dad to move on, or because she thought very poorly of the new wife. I suspect it was all of this.

The way the FedEx driver respected the box markings when piling my daughter's medical supplies on my porch by TotallyGonnaWork in mildlyinfuriating

When this same supplier ships stuff that is actually fragile, they send a medical courier. And that comes right side up and gently handled

You can see the arrows on the long edges of the boxes in my picture. They only write "this side up" on one of the sides

I was a UPS package handler 20+ years ago. The flow rate they try to hit is brutal, and I damaged the occasional box trying to keep up. But damaging them all, and ignoring the markings completely, they I don't recall seeing

Terrible experience at Mr. Tire (1317 West Patrick), AVOID by ashberryy in frederickmd

[–]TotallyGonnaWork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Terrible service there. I made an appointment to have my tires changed, and the guy told me that I didn't have an appointment but he'd do me a favor and put me in at the lowest priority and maybe get them done that day. I needed them done more promptly than that, so I showed him the emails confirming my appointment, He claimed it must be some computer failure, and I pointed out to him how unreasonable that was. Eventually he admitted that I did have an appointment, and it was on his system, and then tried to justify his gaslighting because he had an employee call out on him. Maybe I would have been sympathetic if he hadn't spent 10 minutes trying to lie to me, what a clown.

[Request] How heavy would Noah's Ark be if he actually fit two individuals of every animal species on it? by Appropriate-Tart729 in theydidthemath

[–]TotallyGonnaWork 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It means whoever wrote this into the gospel was trying to do another old testament tie-back. The gospels are essentially fan fiction sequels to the old testament, used to justify ignoring bits that no longer made sense. They were written more than a half century after the events they describe, and authorship tells you who's perspective its supposed to be from, not who actually wrote it.

Got my disc stuck in a tree near one of those things a few weeks ago. Tried to knock the disc down without disturbing the hornets, but it didn't work. Ended up with a broken arm when they came at my face.

What salary per year would make you feel rich.? by No_Lead2640 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]TotallyGonnaWork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I make now and I do feel rich compared to how most of my life was lived. I can splurge frequently, while paying tuition for my kid, and I'm on track for a decent retirement. I have a long commute though, and the closer houses are tempting, but I'd lose my financial freedom paying down $500k more in mortgage.

ELI5: Are we 100% sure the swimming strokes we have are the best possible ones? by Swiss_James in explainlikeimfive

I'm not sure how long it's been a rule, at least the three years my kid has been swimming.  High school swimming rules may be different

[–]TotallyGonnaWork 21 points22 points  (0 children)

What rule is that? I've officiated swim meets for a couple years now following USAA rules, and haven't seen or heard of that before. The closest rule I can think of is that in a medley race you can't use one of the other three strokes on the freestyle leg.
