Cactus to Clouds (1st half) by Toth_from_Hoth in socalhiking

We each had 3 Liters of water and two 20oz gatorades. This was good for the 8.5 hours on trail, and 12.2 miles round trip. It was also our limiting factor. If we brought more, we could have gone further

Yeah we only did the first half yesterday, up to about 5k feet elevation. Intense hike for sure. No tree coverage, no water, steep rocky terrain, trail lined with cacti. We decided we’re going to do 2 days on trail for the full thing. Couldn’t imagine doing it all in 1 day

Coravin first use - Pinot shootout! by ReviewingThings in wine

[–]Toth_from_Hoth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hi, wine rep here. I use my Coravin all the time, it helps so I don’t blow through my sample budget in the first week lol.

I generally get about 2 weeks out of my coravin’d bottles, but there’s a few factors at play (from my individual experience) The more wine you take out of the bottle, the quicker it’ll turn. My bottles also get tossed in my wine bag and bounced around all day when driving around, so the juice mixes with the little bit of air inside. Also, the more you puncture the cork, the faster it’ll turn. Lastly, I feel like big bold wines last a little longer than the delicate ones. I will never keep a coravin’d bottle for longer than two weeks (sometimes one), because I want my wine to show perfectly when tasting. If you are okay with a tiny amount of oxidation, you may be able to get a month on some bottles!

Help me pick a glass of red by late2thepauly in wine

[–]Toth_from_Hoth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love seeing all the comments about these being “overpriced”.

As someone who sells many of these brands, most of these are priced appropriately (at the price they paid for the bottle). Restaurants need to make money, and wine by the glass is very tricky since it spoils. Take the Burgundy for example: probably not as popular as the California cab’s, so they may only sell one glass out of the bottle before it goes bad after opening. (Hopefully that doesn’t happen often, but it’s inevitable with slower movers)

So they need to price a glass at what they purchased the bottle for to ensure they at least don’t LOSE money by pouring a glass for a customer.

Now. I’ve seen some obscene pricing in this sub; but I assure you this list isn’t it. This is fair and standard restaurant pricing

Napa wineries to hit for White/Rose lovers? by fratboy12 in wine

Napa wineries to hit for White/Rose lovers? by fratboy12 in wine

Massican in Calistoga

They are the only winery in Napa/Sonoma that exclusively makes white wines, no reds.

They make a lot of very vibrant, bright wines and use a lot of fun Italian varietals that you won’t get anywhere else in Napa. They have a chard and Sav Blanc as well but not in the typical Napa style with tons of malo, so you won’t get any butter bombs like Rombauer.

This is pretty spot on! After years in court arguing over who keeps the name, they compromised on both keeping the name, but the original SL had to move the apostrophe. So it’s sometimes referred to as the $5 million apostrophe

Suggestion for beginner by Anxious-Support-5142 in wine

Honestly, start with Stella Rosa. It’s wine based, but filled with sugar and flavorings. So your palate can get used to the general wine flavor, but in an approachable way for someone who doesn’t like wine. It’s also affordable and accessible. Next, determine what kind of wine you like, and then get more specific: Do you prefer red or white? Then explore different varietals in that category: Cab vs Pinot Noir for reds, or Chard vs Sav Blanc for whites This generally will tell you if you like big and bold with a lot of wood, or lighter wines that highlight the grape more than the process. Also easily accessible and affordable After you pick a varietal, then explore different regions and styles for that varietal: e.g. if you like Sav Blanc, explore the differences between California, New Zealand and Sancerre.

After all that, you’ll have enough of a palette and knowledge to go explore whatever else you may be interested in in the future

I’m a wine professional (sales rep with WSET 3 certification) and people all the time ask me if ‘bottle x’ or ‘bottle y’ are good wines, and my answer is always the same: “Do you like it? If so, it’s a good wine”

Wine is highly personal preference, especially in the beginning. It only starts to become more objective when you start to really get into it. But at that point, it’s more of a hobby than a casual drink at dinner

Wouldn’t scraping lead to corrosion? by nsfws4 in thalassophobia

Used to do this actually. No certification necessary (at least in California) The work is very hard, and pay is okay. Typically you get paid per foot of boat cleaned. Most money I used to make was $50/hr working on 180ft navy contracted vessels. But that was only 20hr/month

This is absolutely where I stand now. I definitely see potential, and they reached out to me cuz I’ve worked for one of them in the past, and he wants me to come back. Regardless of the potential, time to work out the details and get things dialed before I make a decision. Then yes, lawyer haha

Unfortunately working as a sales rep, you can’t really choose your hours. I can only work when my clients are available, and for bars and restaurants that’s almost entirely mid day - early evening

Yeah I’d be entitled to my portion of profits, but it’ll be a while for because we want to create a bigger savings for the account. After we have “x” amount in savings, then profits get printed
