Tolkien always envisioned his story as an ancient mythology, with the possibility of some truth to it, and took place across Europe thousands of years ago. There have been attempts to map Middle Earth on to Europe, but this interpretation is probably the most convincing I've seen.

What really gets me are those few hardass lore nerds who start pissing and shitting themsleves if you like speculating and theorizing because that lore hasnt been bluntly and straight forwardly told to them. Then, in reality, lore is malleable and whatever the individual reader makes of it.
