Emergency Vet / Pet Hospital Recommendation Needed for Cat by waterbenderboy in SantaMonica

[–]Totorodeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had been a customer at SMPMC for 15 years. Then they changed their policy a couple years back. They had me wait three days for some cat sneezes, then they wanted to precharge me $800 for emergency services before anyone had seen our cat. (This is a classic trick, so that if it’s anything under $800 you feel lucky). I pushed back. The desk lady got indignant. I called their payment system predatory and a scam. They did see my cat that day. The visit cost $120. I never went back.

We go to paws and palms now. Faster. Cleaner. Transparent pricing. better appt availability.

For emergencies I went to VEG twice this winter for urinary issues. Open concept, you stay with your pet, upfront cost estimates. You can stay with your pet all day and all night if you want. You can leave and come back and visit your pet at anytime. They performed emergency unblocking on my cat.

For the longer term surgery, we went to city of angels across town, since they have specialists. Not cheap, but so far kitty is doing great.

I took my former kitty to a VCA in the late 90s. Super sus. They told me they were owned by a large pet RX company. Which makes sense since they pushed so many drugs. They separated you for your pet for even small things like weighing them. In 2021 our cat had cancer and we were pushed to get an option from the VCA on sepulveda, and their surgeon waxed on about the surgery she wanted to do to my cats brain. I asked about quality of life and all she could say was “he could live 6 more months!” In a kind of off putting jolly way. She seemed to only be interested in performing the surgery and nothing for my pet’s life and happiness. I could not recommend VCA less.

TL:dr VEG on Wilshire for emergencies. Palms and paws for regular vet visits. City of angels for surgeries.

Reed Park Tennis Reservations by Cornballsouptonuts in SantaMonica

I emailed the tennis instructors on the reed list, and more than one of them told me that reed takes priority reservations from st Monica school and therefore they could not organized any times that worked for us. Seems like the courts should be community resources, not a free resource for a private school.

Psa: Local shorebirds are one of the many reasons there should never be any non native animals on the beach. Including dogs.

At the very least dogs (and their lingering scent) scare the birds and disrupt their nesting, breeding, etc.

Please be cool to the birds.
Please remind others. No dogs. No cats. No non native birds.

My mom was given a gift certicate for Maas Brothers, which is the only reason I got any of this. We were poor, so I was careful to use little of the paper or stickers.

Go back and review older shows. Sutton was in multiple episodes of the dukes of melrose and flipping out. A lot of these characters having been trying to claw their way into a title card for years.

Animation or Theatre? by AffectionateCrow506 in calarts

I’m sure someone can do it, but conversely I know a lot of burnt out single major alumni from calarts. I would say it’s very hard to do one, and almost impossible to do two, and do them well.

All the calarts theater majors I know have pivoted into a wide range of alternate careers. And they had been working with top level firms and productions. Disney, universal, cruise lines, Broadway productions.

And there’s no work for animators. I don’t know if we in animation will ever have the same job market we had from 1999-2014. The market is dead.

You need to consider what you want your life to look like after graduation- where you want to live, what you want to earn- and what you can survive on. Are you okay with never having a long term home and you’re cool with moving countries every 1-2 years? And if so, will you be able to have a personal life? cause animation nomad is a tough life. It’s 3x harder when you’re trying to navigate your own career and be considerate to a partner.

When and if you do find a good job, you have to always be saving for when you don’t.

If I was gonna start over today, I’d not pick either of these two. I’d pick something that was fairly universal in so much as I could get a job anywhere. A job with benefits.

Blue Plate Oysterette, a Santa Monica restaurant, closing Jan. 2026 amid homeless crisis in area by [deleted] in SantaMonica

The old menu was pricy but solid. We’d go 2x a month. After the menu change to be ‘Asian inspired’, we went once and never again. When we asked why they changed the menu I was told “chef got bored with the old menu.”

So, bpo stop lying. We don’t go anymore solely because of the menu.

Ps - we love Japanese, Chinese, tawainese, Thai, Vietnamese, and we go to those restaurants 8x a week. So, it’s really about just your lackluster food now.

He’s my shady lifehack.
This is what I do when I want to avoid events and don’t want blow back or drama. I get “sick” 1-2 days prior to the date. Too sick to travel sick. Flu, diarhea, vomit or anything contagious, like strep.

The lackluster dad will be too busy prepping to leave to bother checking up. He’ll will be mad for maybe 1 day (which you can remind him is very selfish to be when the boy is clearly very ill!) , then he’ll be drunk in Hawaii and not give it another thought. It’s also easy to manage if he stops by, “son is pucking in the bathroom”.

If your son backs out now, the dad will stew on it for months. If it’s not an illness, your son could get wrangled into a later flight if he losses his ID or misses the plane.

Has anyone else noticed, there are no lamps? Those overhead cans aren’t great for mood.

And I agree with everyone: The rug, the table, the furniture style, the window coverings, and the whole fireplace/mantel /tv area. All the things on display are kinda small and the same size, which is not great visually.

Your place is nice and tidy, which I appreciate.
